I've got a new baby and a friend coming to town who wants to meet this baby on Friday! Friend has a tight time window and needs to meet in Manhattan somewhere in-between Midtown and the West Village. I have no idea where to go. [more inside]
I really like German mid-century art pottery -- think Scheurich, Ruscha, etc. And there's lots of it available at decent prices . . . in Europe. Where I live, it seems to be limited to a few expensive specimen pieces in mid-century furniture stores. But I'll be visiting New York City soon, and they have all the shopping in the world there, right? Where should I go for a good selection in the sub-$50 range? [more inside]
I'd like to get into a more regular schedule with weightlifting workouts—but I'm imminently moving from Copenhagen to split my time between New York and Boston. How do I do this? Looking for trainer/gym recommendations, especially: [more inside]
I love dancing to 80s (and 90s) music, but with Culture Club now closed, I'm not sure where to go in New York City. Are there any new dance places that are devoted to 80s/90s music, or that have "80s nights"? Thanks!
A bar called Albatross at Ocean Beach in Fire Island has street art preserved from 1982. It's vaguely recognizable, and it sounds like it was preserved because the guy who did it has made a name for himself in the graffiti world. I like it. I am having trouble figuring out who did it. Can you help? Here are some shots I took--couldn't get one of the whole thing.
Seeking recommendations for easy New York City hiking clubs. [more inside]
My partner and I are coming down for the weekend in early July: are there any interesting things happening that weekend worth checking out? [more inside]
What musicals/shows should I see on Broadway while I'm in New York? I'll be visiting NYC in September of this year and I'm unlikely to be back for another few years, so I'd really like to know what good shows are on right now. [more inside]
My NYC townhouse has a garden in the back. The garden has a wall around it, which has been there for decades. Two nearby trees has caused it to bow out of alignment toward my neighbor's garden, though not dramatically so. My neighbor claims in a letter to me that the wall will one day collapse into her garden, and wants us to share the cost of replacing the wall, before that happens, with a fence. She also said that if I don't agree to do this, I better make sure that my insurance covers the possible damage to her property that a collapse could cause. I think my neighbor (who is wealthy) just wants a new fence for aesthetic reasons so it matches other fencing on her property, and that the wall is fine -- and I have some questions for the hive-mind... I am intrigued by the prospect of moving to Sunset Park in Brooklyn, but would love some real talk about whether it fits in my budget ($1500 for a studio/1BR) and if I should be looking somewhere else based on my priorities. [more inside]
I'm taking a four day trip to NYC over Memorial Day weekend (solo). I have plans on Sunday evening but other than that, my time is completely unaccounted for. And aside from a few non-specific ideas, I'm overwhelmed by choices. [more inside]

Looking for recommendations for places to get waxed in NYC (Manhattan preferred). I have tried Bliss and Uni K; looking for other suggestions. Thanks!
My wife, a friend, and I are traveling to New York in a couple of weeks. A few days ago my wife broke her ankle, and she'll be in a lower-leg cast and on crutches during the trip. Her orthopedist has approved the travel. We're looking for advice from people familiar with the places and activities we had planned, particularly people who have experience doing so with limited mobility. Details below. [more inside]
Seems a long shot, but: A friend and I are planning on doing the Falls to Statue (Buffalo NY to NYC) route by canoe this summer, and we're intrigued by the prospect of bringing a Google Street View rig with us. What would be the best way to get in touch with Google's Maps team to see if they would be interested in letting us take a Streetview rig on the route? I've poked around Google's "Contact US" site without much that inspires confidence.
I'm an experienced software engineer and manager. I have a number of successful projects under my belt and some really great companies on my resume. However, I'm really, really bad at the traditional whiteboard interview. I'm getting ready to start looking for a new job. Would it be worthwhile to request an alternative interview format? I'm interested in comedy shows in NYC that take place outside the big mainstream venues like Caroline's or Gotham Comedy Club. For lack of a better term, you might call what I'm looking for "underground" comedy shows, but I'm not construing that term narrowly. Just really looking to get away from the more touristy spots that seem to often feature bland acts. Edgier/off-beat stuff welcome. Thanks for your ideas!
I am in the city for business tonight and will be left to my own devices for dinner. I would like someplace where I can sit at a somewhat quiet bar, read a book, and eat a reasonably priced burger. Help me Metafilter, I am paralyzed with indecision. [more inside]
Please help me compile research resources for a project I will undertake in the year ahead. I would like to become very familiar with the following subjects: 1) New York City and Greenwich Village in the 1850s-1900. 2) The experience of Irish immigrants in that same era 3) The state of Christmas as a cultural entity and practice in that era. Special snowflake explanation inside. [more inside]
My wife are planning to move to New York in around six months. Assuming you had the $$$ & job situation figured out, what steps in moving are unique to that city, or things you wished you did before you moved there? Is there a good 'NYC basics' guide (things that tell you-- yeah you really should get a NYC driver's license, etc) that isn't geared to 22 year olds? [more inside]
My relatives are coming to visit the big apple and I would be chaperoning them around on a site-seeing tour. The problem is that they are elderly (are retired), from another culture & country (India), a group of 5 and there is a very young baby ( couple of months old) traveling with them. This makes using subways, or taking long walks or using bicycles a difficult proposition. What would be the best way to give them a good NYC experience? [more inside]
What public creative person (defined pretty broadly, but hopefully at least somewhat famous) has a really cool office in the NYC area? We're looking for someone with a rich, interesting-looking space, interesting tools and great stories. Examples might be say, magazine writer Gay Talese, who works in his townhouse in Manhattan surrounded by memorabilia from all his past stories, or the honchos at Pixar who have special secret hideaways and whatnot. (Definitely looking for personal workspaces, not big companies with fancy buildings and foosball tables.)
No, seriously, why am I having zero luck? I ended a long-term relationship in June. I'm still getting over it, but I want to get back on that damn horse. I moved to NYC for grad school in August, and I have had zero (literally, 0) luck with men since the breakup. [more inside]
I work in digital publishing, mostly doing email newsletters, and the pressure and workload keep cranking up. I'm looking for something else, but I need help surviving in the interim. [more inside]
Someone I know is moving closer to NYC soon and is looking for information about how to best navigate the city. She is confined to a scooter and has extremely limited mobility. What resources can I give her? This would be more for periodic visits, not day-to-day commuting. I already know about the MTA's homepage for accessibility and the Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities. What else is there? [more inside]
Language learning questions here tend to get a lot of "watch Univision, listen to podcasts, converse with native speakers" types of answers, which are great. I will probably utilize some of those things, but I'd really like to take a class because I would benefit from the externally imposed structure. [more inside]
I need to find a medical malpractice lawyer in NYC. How do I find the best one? [more inside]
[Asking for a friend] My building had a fire last night, on the floor below mine. I have middling fire damage at baseboard level in both bedrooms, both of which will be uninhabitable until the damage is ripped out and redone. All my windows are broken and glass is everywhere, but aside from the above stuff and the overwhelming odor of smoke and my broken-down front door, there is no other (water or fire or smoke stain) damage to the apartment. This is in NYC, and I have no renter's insurance. [more inside]
I recently bought a corset for a friend of mine. She looks killer drop-dead amazing gorgeous in it. We'd like to go out to dinner somewhere in NYC where such attire would be both appreciated and fit in. (She'll probably pair it with pants—nothing fetish-y. I'll do my level best to look sharp, but I can hardly compete.) All suggestions appreciated. Thanks!
What are the best vegan restaurants in Brooklyn and Manhattan? Do vegan chicken and waffles exist? [more inside]
I'm a student in NYC. I'm looking to volunteer somewhere where my time will do the most possible good. Think "effective altruism" but with time instead of money, which I don't have. [more inside]
Your friendly itinerant field recordist wants to know: do any masjids (mosques) in the greater NYC metro area regularly announce the call to prayer? And if so, do they observe the 5x-daily adhan schedule, or only certain prayer times? Thanks for any info!

I've been to NY dozens of times and enjoy exploring neighborhoods like the Village and SoHo where there are lots of shops, coffeeshops, restaurants, etc. I prefer independent shops over the corporate stores you'd find in Midtown. I haven't spent a whole lot of time in NY in the last 10 years so I'm not aware of neighborhoods that may have changed. I'm visiting this weekend please help me decide where to spend my time! My mom just had bunion surgery on her foot. We have joked about carrying her around on a palanquin built for a queen--piled high with cushions, carried by servants feeding her peeled grapes--and I want to make a variation of this happen! This Saturday. I have about 4 friends to help, am already dreaming about props and costumes, and am ready to shell out some dough if needed for an epic surprise. Challenges: it's 25 degrees in NY. A carriage ride seems touristy and not that over-the-top. I want to surprise her and spoil her and make her laugh.
I am a senior engineer looking for software development work in NYC. I'm attracting a lot of attention from recruiters, and I need some advice for how to work with them. I'm concerned that I've already made a huge mistake. [more inside]
I and my partner will be in NYC for about a week in a couple of months, and we're looking at our accommodation options now. We're leaning towards finding a place through air bnb because they look really nice and we've heard good things through friends, but we've also found some hotels in Manhattan that are a cheaper option, and we're not sure which way to go. I am planning my next New York trip and am looking for an unusual place to stay - think something between a youth hostel and standard AirBnB share. Greatness criteria inside! [more inside]
The museum closes at 5:30pm. Do they begin clearing the galleries then, or do they just stop selling tickets at that point? If you are already inside could you get, say, half an hour more of viewing time before being kicked out?
I recently moved to New York City. I find getting around the city seems to involve constant interior thrum of unwarranted anger at other people. I would like to stop being a person who is heading to work or the grocery store while being mad at most everybody else; it's not a good way to live. Any tricks or heuristics or habits of thought you use would be very helpful! [more inside]
