How can I drive most of the way from Boston to New York, park, and then take commuter rail (or similar) into Manhattan? [more inside]
Short version- I need a GOOD NYC dentist. Willing to go out of network if necessary. [more inside]
I'm a Pilates instructor looking for yoga teacher training program recommendations in NYC. [more inside]
I would like to carry food giftcards with me to handout to the homeless during my daily commute, what type would provide the most bang for the buck? [more inside]
Looking for suggestions for a neighborhood to live in. I'm leaning toward something in Manhattan, but may consider Brooklyn. [more inside]
This has been a bizarre problem that's been plaguing us every late fall: for some unknown reason, we get a sudden influx of mosquitoes in our apartment that STARTS in October/November. It's always after the point in time when the weather is cold enough that mosquitoes shouldn't be alive anymore (right now it's 44ºF, for example). [more inside]
I had beautiful veneers done 10 years ago in California by an amazing dentist who has since retired. I'd like to see a recommended cosmetic dentist in NYC to discuss how to best maintain the veneers (and to answer questions about a night guard). Any recommendations?
I know, I know, it’s a hypothetical now. But I’m in NY state and I’m looking for a plan for a married couple that doesn't see the doctor that much - knock wood - but has lots of prescriptions. Healthcare spending would be a plus but not a necessity and I’d like to pay around a grand for the two of us. Suggestions?
From my research, one is expected to pay the deposit and first month's rent for an apartment in New York City with some sort of certified funds. Some things I've read have said cashier's checks, some have said traveller's checks, some have said certified checks, some have said money orders. I don't have an account anywhere with a physical presence in New York City. How do I handle this situation? Do I need a cashier's check to pay the broker's fee as well? Can I just dodge this whole problem by wiring money? [more inside]
I'm heading to NYC this weekend with my two sisters to see Hamilton (yay!). I go into the city semi-regularly to see shows but since one daughter is vegan we tend to eat at vegan places so I haven't really looked for any other restaurants. We're staying at the Marriott Marquis since it's so close to the theatre, but I want to avoid the tourist restaurants in Times Square. Walking distance would be preferable. Two of us are vegetarians so vegetarian friendly also. Any suggestions?
I need a list of all the NYC Subway stations that have above ground platforms. I've seen this map, and Wikipedia has this. But, ideally, I would like a table or list of the actual stations in text form. I found this fantastic NYC Transit Subway Entrance And Exit Dataset, but it doesn't list if the station is underground or not (not sure if I can infer from the data it does have?). Transportation nerds of MeFi, can you help me?
Have permit; need instructor. I am a total beginner. I no longer know anybody locally with a car who can teach me, so where's a good driving school for adults that can get me through the test, ideally located in Brooklyn or Queens?
I was a customer of Freelancers Medical in Brooklyn, and I loved their approach to medical care. They went out of business and transferred their patients to One Medical, which isn't as nice but still way more pleasant than a traditional primary care practice. Are there other practices in NYC (preferably near Park Slope) with a similar approach? [more inside]
After years of struggling (and slowly failing) as a freelancer, I finally have a decent job and some savings. I also have a huge tax debt, including a few unfiled years for both the IRS and NYS. Can you recommend a tax expert in NYC (or nearby) to assist me in getting out from under? I'm looking to file returns and work out payment plans, as well as get on track for the future. I feel intense, paralyzing shame about this, and I really need someone who won't add to that with lectures or chastisement. Thank you!
Dinner and an election in downtown Brooklyn [more inside]
Thinking about getting a car and live in Brooklyn. What's the best move? [more inside]
On November 5th 2008 and November 7th 2012 here in London England, I tried to collect as many British newspapers as I could that featured Barack Hussein Obama II's historic election to the presidency of the United States. The whole world was united in pride for the US on both of those days. Now that he's moving out of the White House, I feel like it's time to give them away; the question is, who gets them? [Preferably to someone in New York City. Sorry Duluth.] [more inside]
I've taken a job in NYC. Yay! The only tricky part is I'm in Texas. I could do with some advice on finding an apartment, neighborhoods, car ownership and the things I haven't thought of yet. Basically, tell me everything, but specific questions below. [more inside]
I have to get it after work tonight so no time for a lot of shopping around or flea markets. [more inside]
My account is in litigation and my building called the marshals to change my locks without notice last night. My cats and meds are trapped inside the unit. I've been calling law firms but no one has called back. Does anyone know a good firm I could get on the phone with right now? Money is no problem.
I have a very specific interest in NYC during this period. What are some good non-fiction books about it? Think the New York of Taxi Driver and A Most Violent Year. [more inside]
Which resources should I be using to find high-value/low-cost flights/hotels if I don't have a particular destination in mind? Looking to take a short trip from NYC for a couple of days next week and go someplace new or different (to me). Do airlines have last-minute just fill some seat deals for those of us who don't travel enough to have any status? Do you have specific ideas for easy and inexpensive escapes from NYC at the end of October?
Which NYC (Manhattan) ice rink, accessible from Chelsea Market, is best for figure skating practice? [more inside]
During the warm months, every other weekend, people put on a block party type thing on my street. Most aspects of of the event are benign and fun. But: about 3-4 DJs set up along the street, which is not very long and spend the next 10 hours competing with each other. It makes my apartment uninhabitable for that time period, even with all the windows closed. My wife and I have to shout at each other to communicate, etc. I'd like to know how to contact the board/committee/official who approves these permits and make a complaint about the noise. [more inside]
I've got a new baby and a friend coming to town who wants to meet this baby on Friday! Friend has a tight time window and needs to meet in Manhattan somewhere in-between Midtown and the West Village. I have no idea where to go. [more inside]
I just switched insurance and am looking for new doctors. Can you recommend an obgyn and/or an endocrinologist (in NYC) who you love? [more inside]
I moved out of my apartment on the 30th (the last day of the lease). The movers were late, and by the time they were done, the management company's office was closed. Now it's the weekend. The lease states that keys must be returned to the office. How do I return the keys in a way that will be considered "on time"? [more inside]

Hi MeFi! I can't remember where I heard a podcast about a British guy who ends up in NYC, meets "Claire" on a dating site (I think?), and then proceeds to have a beautiful intellectual relationship with her only to have her start getting horribly sick. Turns out it's a giant hoax she is playing on him just for fun... any ideas?! Thanks!
I have a wooden window seat/radiator cabinet cover that's aged and warped. It measures approximately 88 inches wide by 25 inches deep with a hinge in the middle. Pictures here. Does anyone have suggestions on cabinetry companies I could contact and an idea of how much it would cost? [more inside]
I've got a black tie optional wedding coming up. I could wear a suit, but I've put on too much weight to fit into my suits. So I figure why not get spiffy. BUT the best place, Eisenberg & Eisenberg, has closed its doors for good. So... [more inside]
My husband's birthday is coming up and I'd like to gift him a weekend full of adventures to choose from, as well as some smaller physical gifts that go along with the adventuring theme. Anything in NYC or day trip distance away works! What are your favorite adventures and adventure-related gifts? [more inside]
My partner and I are visiting family in NYC for Thanksgiving from San Diego with our 7-month old son. How do we dress him to stay warm while babywearing as we navigate the city? [more inside]
My daughter and I recently discovered Hamilton (yes, I know, we're way behind the curve). I'd like to take a short (~3 day) trip to NYC, see some sights, and maybe see the play. Tickets are still quite expensive, and I know a significant portion of the original cast has moved on. Does it still make sense to shell out the big bucks to see Hamilton on Broadway? Or did we miss the moment for it? [more inside]
My sister-in-law, originally from Europe, is a visiting student in NYC this Fall. For her upcoming birthday, I thought a cultural membership or NYC experience would be fun. Maybe something her student budget would not ordinarily be spent towards. Based on this question and other threads, I thought membership to MoMa, Whitney, or New Museum may be options. The only issue is that she is only here from now till December 2016 and the memberships are for 1 year. Or maybe a trapeze class. [more inside]
I really like German mid-century art pottery -- think Scheurich, Ruscha, etc. And there's lots of it available at decent prices . . . in Europe. Where I live, it seems to be limited to a few expensive specimen pieces in mid-century furniture stores. But I'll be visiting New York City soon, and they have all the shopping in the world there, right? Where should I go for a good selection in the sub-$50 range? [more inside]
I'd like to get into a more regular schedule with weightlifting workouts—but I'm imminently moving from Copenhagen to split my time between New York and Boston. How do I do this? Looking for trainer/gym recommendations, especially: [more inside]
I have treatment-resistant bipolar depression and anxiety. I've been working with the same therapist for 8 years and have made progress but feel like I need a new perspective. Minor special snowflake: I'm pretty smart, and I feel like I need a therapist I can't out-think. (Yes, I know how obnoxious that sounds.) Can anyone recommend someone in the area who they think is really pretty brilliant?
I just moved to Brooklyn, and my partner and I are interested in getting out of the city for short trips on weekends. We're interested in nature walks and scenic places. Where could we go that fills the following criteria? [more inside]
We've lived in NYC for several years now, and for our first apartment we had to use a broker. Now we'd like to go No-Fee (obvs.) and have 2 months to find a place. We're using Streeteasy, but I know there are a lot of luxury buildings or property managers that have openings that never show up on those sites, and I'd like to find those! [more inside]
I'm going to be spending my 25th birthday alone. What should I do to celebrate? [more inside]
I love dancing to 80s (and 90s) music, but with Culture Club now closed, I'm not sure where to go in New York City. Are there any new dance places that are devoted to 80s/90s music, or that have "80s nights"? Thanks!
Here's a challenge: I'm writing an article on NYC luxury rentals that are in hotel buildings and provide access to hotel amenities (such as room service, cleaning services, etc). W New York is an example of what I'm looking for. Finding these is tough. They are often really sneaky! Can you find one?
A bar called Albatross at Ocean Beach in Fire Island has street art preserved from 1982. It's vaguely recognizable, and it sounds like it was preserved because the guy who did it has made a name for himself in the graffiti world. I like it. I am having trouble figuring out who did it. Can you help? Here are some shots I took--couldn't get one of the whole thing.
Looking for a bar in Brooklyn with a view of Manhattan for a party of eight that will allow reservations for pre-dinner drinks. Any ideas? Must allow reservations - don't want to turn up and wing it. Indoor also preferred, but outdoor fine too (if it means a view is possible).
Hi, Fitness Mefites! I am looking for exercises classes in NYC to get back into the swing of more intense exercise. Personal recommendations appreciated! Special considerations inside... [more inside]

Hello New Yorkers, I have two friends here in Spain who will be visiting scholars in the US for 4 months between October and January. The catch is that one will be working in NYU and the other at Princeton. Ideally, they would like to stay in or near Manhattan, but in an area that makes it as easy as possible to travel to Princeton. [more inside]
I’m suffering from excruciating loneliness, and it’s grinding me down. I haven’t had a real relationship in more than six years, and I simply don’t need any more “me” time. Please, could you help me think up some ideas for where I could meet real, live, reasonably youthful, reasonably mentally healthy, reasonably intellectual guys … in person? [more inside]
