Worried about travelling to NYC next week.

I postponed my last planned trip to NYC so I could visit during the Macy's Parade (something I always wanted to attend). Now that the US is in a state of high alert regarding the recent terror attacks overseas and ominous threats to NY and Washington DC I have to admit I am scared to travel. I do understand that terror is what they want to instill on us and the terrorists shouldn't win BUT I am pretty apprehensive. I am just wondering what others think about traveling right now?

Early 30s, male, NYC area. How can I date anyone?

Hello all, I'm having some trouble in the dating world. I'm in my early 30s and male. I'm not rich, don't have an excellent career, and haven't traveled the world. I'm educated and make an OK living, but that doesn't seem to be enough for the women who live here. [more inside]

I believe my husband was treated in a neglient matter by NYC AAR.

Hi all - My husband came in the door today shaken. His AAR (Access-A-Ride) trip home today involved a driver who "handled him roughly", a torn sweater, and a one-inch piece of plastic hanging out of said sweater. I think this is potentially a case of negligence. More inside. [more inside]

Renovation in NYC

My wife and I are considering buying a place that requires a kitchen and bath renovation in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Our real estate agent is suggesting we get an architect or contractor to come in, take a look, and give us an estimate before we even put in an offer. A couple questions: (i) is this necessary? We've done some research online and have a good general idea of how much kitchen and bathroom renovations cost - or I am I wrong and we really need a individualized estimate?; (ii) we don't have any friends who are architects/contractors - how would we go about finding one to come by a place we haven't even put an offer in on yet and give us an estimate?; (iii) assuming we go forward, with or without getting an estimate up front, how do we find a good architect and/or contractor - and do we need both? Any answers, suggestions, resources, etc. would be greatly appreciated - thanks!

Six Month NYC Moving Plan

My wife are planning to move to New York in around six months. Assuming you had the $$$ & job situation figured out, what steps in moving are unique to that city, or things you wished you did before you moved there? Is there a good 'NYC basics' guide (things that tell you-- yeah you really should get a NYC driver's license, etc) that isn't geared to 22 year olds? [more inside]

Your favorite NYC art blogs and calendars?

Dearest New Yorkers, Having just showed up in Brooklyn little more than a week ago (via SF), I've been wonderfully overwhelmed. The one thing I'm missing is a good list of the best places to help distill (or not distill) the innumerable art events and openings popping off both nearby and in Manhattan. Any advices and favorite digital spots are hugely appreciated. I've got a few things I'm looking at but the more, the better. Bonus points for physical publications! <3 Matthew

help! should I drop out of my MFA writing program?

I started a MFA writing program in Vancouver this fall. I wasn't sure about whether I should go or not to begin with, and now, I'm still second-guess and worrying I made a big mistake. I'm unhappy, often, and I'm worried that if I stay it will be for the wrong reasons: a big, heavy sunken cost fallacy. Can you help, please? Long complicated backstory inside. [more inside]

Around the Big Apple in 0.33 days (with a baby and 4 retirees)

My relatives are coming to visit the big apple and I would be chaperoning them around on a site-seeing tour. The problem is that they are elderly (are retired), from another culture & country (India), a group of 5 and there is a very young baby ( couple of months old) traveling with them. This makes using subways, or taking long walks or using bicycles a difficult proposition. What would be the best way to give them a good NYC experience? [more inside]

What's a good date idea (we're in our 40s)?

I'm a woman in my late 40s, haven't dated in a while, and was just set up with someone. We met for a drink, and it went all right. No electric sparks, but no terrible STOP signs either. He seems like a good guy, and I want to give it a chance, but since I didn't feel a strong attraction or flirty vibe, I'd like to do something for our next date OTHER than simply going out to dinner. What are some good date ideas for people our age, in NYC?

What public figure has a great office in the New York area?

What public creative person (defined pretty broadly, but hopefully at least somewhat famous) has a really cool office in the NYC area? We're looking for someone with a rich, interesting-looking space, interesting tools and great stories. Examples might be say, magazine writer Gay Talese, who works in his townhouse in Manhattan surrounded by memorabilia from all his past stories, or the honchos at Pixar who have special secret hideaways and whatnot. (Definitely looking for personal workspaces, not big companies with fancy buildings and foosball tables.)

Fire in apartment below--rebuilding/insurance questions

[Asking for a friend] My building had a fire last night, on the floor below mine. I have middling fire damage at baseboard level in both bedrooms, both of which will be uninhabitable until the damage is ripped out and redone. All my windows are broken and glass is everywhere, but aside from the above stuff and the overwhelming odor of smoke and my broken-down front door, there is no other (water or fire or smoke stain) damage to the apartment.
