Hi all. I've been diagnosed pretty recently with allergies severe enough to warrant carrying an epi-pen. For the purposes of this discussion, the only relevant allergy is to nuts. [more inside]

Ok, so I recently purchased a pullup cage/station. You know, includes a side for dips, a pullup bar, etc. and is one large metal structure put together with nuts and bolts. Anyway, I think I enjoyed putting the darn thing together even more than I will using it. What other projects/hobbies can I work on/build/create using a tool box, wrench, other hardware type stuff etc. in my small to medium sized apartment that won't lose me my security deposit?

Once a long time ago, I was a few hours outside Beijing during the mid-Autumn festival, in a pretty rural area. We were given these amazing mooncakes with nuts and vegetables that were way tastier to me than the sweet bean-paste/egg/lotus-paste/etc. ones you normally get. Help me find the name of them so I can buy/bake my own. [more inside]

Is phytic acid in raw nuts an 'actual thing'? And is this really something I need to worry about if I eat vast quantities of nuts daily? I have been experimenting with eating raw food, and feeling better than I ever have (which is totally perplexing to this inveterate skeptic.) But I keep reading about the importance of soaking nuts to decrease the amount of 'phytic acid' which reduces absorption of minerals and other useful things from food. [more inside]

What are the bolts in roller blade wheels called? The long ones where the bolt screws all the way into the other part. I need the specific type so I can find a smaller version for a different project. I just have no idea how to search for this.

What's a good online/mailorder source for organic nuts and seeds? A google search turns up a few results, but it doesn't give you an objective look at the quality and freshness of their product. Any experiences you could share? [more inside]

There are pecans everywhere. Formerly they carpeted the backyard, now they're in huge container in the living room. Mostly. There are still more to pick up. A LOT more, the pecan tree has been surprisingly fruitful this year.
What the hell does one do with a ton of freshly picked pecans, besides eat them and/or give them out to friends and family? [more inside]

If I buy a can of mixed nuts, I find whole Brazil nuts inside. If I buy Brazil nuts in the shell and open them myself, I invariably end up with a pile of smashed oily nut-meat with chunks still stuck to the shell. How, dear AskMe, do those magicians at the factory manage to open Brazil nuts and extract them whole? This question has driven me nuts (ha ha) for years. [more inside]

My kids are now 2 yrs and 7 months and we're going to be introducing them to peanut butter for the first time. Their pediatrician says it's safe. If you have direct experience with this can you please tell me at what age you introduced your kids to nuts and how it went? I'm specifically trying to figure out what possible allergic reaction warning signs we should be looking out for and how we should react to them. [more inside]

Lugnuts-filter? Tire changer place torqued my nuts well past 200ft-pounds (spec is 73ft-pounds). 3 lugs are stripped, 4 nuts are cross-threaded beyond use, one lug nut is missing, and one lug sheared off entirely. What will I need to win in small claims court? (photo link within) [more inside]

Macadamias as a snack every now and then. I'd prefer to buy the natural, non-roasted macadamias from the health food aisle, but these don't come salted, and I like a little salt with my macadamias. How can I salt them myself, and more importantly, how can I make the salt adhere to the macadamias without using any oil? I want to avoid making the nuts any fattier than they already are.

Help me identify this Asian grocery item. An old roommate of my current roommate left this item in the cupboard, and I have no way to get a hold of them to ask about it. The package is yellow with all Asian language text of some sort
. There is a picture of some beans and nuts. Inside are individual packets that seem to contain crushed seeds and/or nuts. What is this product, and what is it used for? i was just going to open it up and sprinkle on my oatmeal in the morning?
