I'd like to buy a small (10-12 inch screen) very inexpensive (sub-$300) notebook, to use for reading PDFs, taking notes, and very light coding (i.e. emacs and python). Any recommendations would be most welcome. [more inside]

I'm looking for a smallish notebook of entirely quad-ruled (graph) paper. Complication: I'd like the lines to be spaced quite close, at 0.1 in. or 3 mm. I've found plenty of notebooks with 0.25 in. grids, but at 0.1 in. I'm having a hard time even finding pads. Other things I would really
like (but aren't deal-breakers like grid size is): hardcover, 70+ pages, not wider than 4 in. Has anyone here gone looking for something like this before? Any recommendations?

This question has been nagging me for years. In college I used to love Roaring Spring 9 x 11" narrow-ruled notebooks, which the bookstore had at a reasonable price ($3 each or something like that?). Since then I've never been able to find any full-sized narrow-ruled (narrower than college-ruled) notebooks anywhere, either in office supply stores or online. I see that Amazon has exactly what I want
, but at the prohibitive price of $61 per notebook (!!). Does anybody have any suggestions of where to buy 9" x 11" narrow-ruled notebooks? Preferably online, but I'm prepared to go to a (Bay Area) office supply store if necessary.

My eight year old laptop is about ready to bite the dust. For the last year and a half it has had permanent residence on my desk as it cannot function if it is not plugged in. The screen must be at the correct angle or it completely cuts out. It struggles to download documents and music. She has been good to me, but it is time to begin thinking about purchasing a new computer. Problem is, I’m fairly out of touch with the market now. Here are my needs with regards to a laptop. You tell me what I should be looking for. [more inside]

My friend's daughter is going off to college to major in media studies. What would be the best MacBook -- new or used -- for her? Ideally it would be able to handle video editing, while still being light. It needs to be as cheap as possible, but it should run Mountain Lion so she can get through most of her college career without having to replace it.
What do you suggest?
(NB The "Mac" part isn't negotiable.)

Here's what I need to do: Keep a lot of disparate bits of info in one place. There will be never more than 15 users. I'd like to use it software as service, I don't want to have to worry about hosting it. Bonus points for being mobile friendly and/or having an app.
We'd like to be able to jam images and videos in there, too. It doesn't have to be a Wiki, a helpful Evernote plugin or something would be a-okay, also. Just looking for a recommendation!

I have a perfect notebook, left over from college, and would love to find more just like it. But it has no branding -- I have no idea who manufactured the darn thing. My school doesn't seem to sell them anymore.
It's 7" by 10", double-wire bound, cloth hardcover, with nice lined pages. Each page has a little recycling triangle symbol on it (indicating 100 percent recycled).
Pics inside. Anyone know who could've made it, or where to find the same?
Many thanks! [more inside]

With her black MacBook on its last legs, my sister is going to be getting a new 13" MacBook Air soon. The stock 256GB model includes a 1.8GHz Intel Dual-Core Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 2.8GHz processor and 4GB of (1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM) memory. The build-to-order options are a 2.0GHz Intel Dual-Core Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.2GHz and 8GB of RAM for $90 each (Education Store prices). Knowing that processor and memory upgrades aren't possible later on, would either of these options make a big difference in performance? She uses it mostly for Office documents, some CS5 work, streaming video, web browsing and music and is hoping to keep it as her main computer for at least 4 years. Thanks for any input.

If it is really nasty, do I have any options for de-nastifying it other than copying the whole thing over?
