This Christmas I'm taking part in an initiative to offer gifts to kids from poor families, that usually don't get any Christmas presents. I'm not sure who is receiving my gift, but I know it will be a boy between 12 and 17 years old. I'm going to offer a football, since it fits the age range, but I would like to include a written note to go with it, something inspirational and optimistic, relativizing the value of material stuff. Any suggestions?

I wrote a note at work that read, "Someone threw away my pizza that was labeled and in the fridge for less than a day. I was expecting to have that for dinner. That sucked. Please don't do that." Now there's drama. I know I handled this badly but I don't know what to do. [more inside]

In the song Dark Storm by The Jezabels (YouTube link), the first 25 seconds are a neat little bass (guitar?) riff. When I listen, it sounds like the very first note, the highest pitch note, is the first note of the measure, and that it should repeat like that throughout the song. But does it? [more inside]

Everybody recognizes the THX deep note sound. Last night, at Nuit Blanche here in Montreal, and just before the fireworks, they were playing recorded instrumental music (with no percussion) featuring long drawn out notes that were as "rich" and exciting as the deep note sound. The music filled me with a thrilling anticipation of something powerful. What music could I have been hearing? What songs do I want to get?

I'm trying to find any example of what a U.S. Treasury security might look like (T-bill, T-note, or T-bond, but not a savings bond). I understand most treasury bonds are electronic now, but it wasn't always that way. The Treasury FAQ says that paper versions still exist. Google Image turns up nothing but oodles of financial graphs no matter what I do. Nothing over 100 years old, please! Versions of this from other countries are fine as long as I can read them in English and they're recent.
