Magazines: what's the best way to get both print and e- subscription?

Ideally, I'd like to find a way to get subscribed to BOTH the print and electronic versions, under one subscription charge, through one platform. (e.g. Buy a print subscription through Amazon and get the Kindle version free, or v.v.) [more inside]

Medium-sized tablet. You know, for the kid(s).

After spending about two weeks using a relative's Kindle Fire HD 8.9 as a video playing device to distract our young son, my wife and I are interested in getting a mid-sized tablet of our own, to double as a video player and portable computer. The Nook HD+ is comparable, and right now, much cheaper. Is there something I'm missing about the Kindle Fire, or are most mid-sized tablets fairly similar? [more inside]

iOS to Android guy - Questions!

Everywhere on the web there is discussion of B&N's great deal on the Nook HD+ for Father's Day. I took the bite and picked up the 16GB (comes w/micro sd port). So far, so good. My questions are: 1) Is there full tablet AES encryption for these? 2) Since B&N finally opened up the Nook and it's now compatible with Google Play's App Store, is there really a reason to root it? And a question about iMessage alternatives. (More inside) [more inside]

Nook vs. Kindle? Please help me choose.

I am looking to purchase an e-ink reader... Been looking at the Kindle and Nook and I am having trouble deciding. One of my top priorities is that books I purchase not be lost in 3, 5 or 10 years down the road. Which device is most likely to be be future proof? I also have specific uses that I want it to work for such as being able to load PDFs of academic articles/books and access to the library (see extended explanation for more uses). How to read "Infinite Jest" on a Nook Color?

I just bought a B&N Nook Color, on which I'll read the NY Times and some Dickens and Trollope. I'd like to download and read "Infinite Jest" on it too, as I've not been motivated to read my five-pound paperback copy. But what's the simplest, cleanest way to flip back and forth between the IJ narrative and the notes on the Nook? Do you have a system? Can you keep both places marked and flip easily? Or what? (I'm pretty tech-phobic but trying to overcome.) Thanks.

Can't read TOC on Nook for iPad

Nook for iPad filter: Is there a way to see a USABLE table of contents for a Nook book on the iPad? I can display the TOC for a book -- but each TOC line shows only ~20 characters, and that's not enough to make it useful. Kindle3 or Color Nook or Samsung Tab or just sticking with dead trees? I've been reading so many reviews, forums, tech support, askme posts, that my head is spinning and I don't know what to think. The new Kindle and Nook are supposedly vastly better than their predecessors, so I'm hoping mefites with new holiday toys might be able to shed some light. [more inside]

US MeFite moving to London asks the eternal question: Kindle or Nook?

I am in the process of preparing to move to London for the next four years to attend college. As I have sold off a large portion of my beloved library, I don't want to find myself doing the same exercise in 4.5 years time when I return to the US. Coming late to the ebook reader dance, I ask you which of these two will be the better choice in light of current capabilities (and in addition to the fact that I want a reader to buy and read books, extras do not figure into the equation) - the Kindle or the Nook?

There's a joke in this negative space, I just know it...

I'm looking for fun things to do with a soda machine sized nook. Our office had, until recently, a soda vending machine (the wide, squattyish kind). The machine is now gone, and I've heard that we'll be getting a new one (switching from a good-ol'-boy-friend-of-a-friend deal to a real Coke distributor). Until then, there's a "hole" in the side of the hallway that my whole workplace walks past every day. It's probably 5 feet wide, maybe 6 or 7 deep. [more inside]
