Processing monthly donations

Our environmental non-profit in Portland, Oregon receives a small portion of its revenue from recurring (monthly) contributions drawn via direct deposit. Recently, the bank we used to administer this account was acquired by another institution and started charging over a hundred bucks per month just to keep the account open. We shut the account down but are still looking for a reasonable alternative. If at all possible we'd like to avoid paying high administrative costs for the service and processing payments manually (since we'd most likely have to keep donors' account numbers in the office). I'm open to new ideas, and thanks in advance!

LLC to Nonprofit

How do I turn an LLC into a nonprofit? You are not my lawyer, but maybe someone has some helpful advice. Formed an LLC to operate a hackerspace since it was the path of least resistance. We have never been profitable, we now want to go the 501(c)3 route. How do we accomplish this cleanly and legally? We're in New Mexico if that helps.

Getting a celebrity to help our nonprofit?

How do we get a (music) celebrity to help promote an event in a YouTube-type video? Our community nonprofit is having a month-long event in June, and my daydream is to get some (recognizable) musician/band in a video that we could post on our very popular Facebook page. Ideally, he/she would say something like, "If I weren't on tour in [wherever] right now, I'd definitely be at [event name]! Don't miss it!" How do I even attempt this? I'm in a medium-sized city on the East Coast.

Need grant money to hire for nonprofit center

I volunteer with a nonprofit that operates a community center. We need to hire a Facility Manager but we can't afford it. I have been researching grant money but I only find grants for community programs not for hiring personnel to work in community centers. Are there any sources for grants where the money can be used to hire personnel to work for nonprofit groups?

Jumpstarting a lasting fund, without the pesky

I would like to create a non-profit fund / fundraising org earmarked towards jumpstarting community centers. I've heard that rather than trying to create a non-profit, it might be best to partner with an existing non-profit with similar interests, and see if they'd "host" the fund I want to create / help with the legal aspects, while allowing me to earmark and oversee the fund. I intend to do regular fundraising, and hope to create a lasting fund that attracts bequests. Does anyone know about the legalities involved here? Any advice as to how I might want to approach such a project?

Career/life advice for a real world neophyte, please.

I'm a recent college grad who has been playing the "unemployment blues" for the past 5 months and have had no real success finding full-time work. However, I've recently had two excellent interviews for an entry-level administrative assistant position at a small non-profit organization in New York (where I currently live with my parents). I'm not sure if this is the kind of work I would be able to do for more than a year (well aware that most people don't necessarily enjoy their jobs and generally have to haul ass in the early stages), and the pay is mediocre, but I am entering student loan repayment soon ($80k+ worth of debt) and need a steady paying job ASAP. Please offer me some perspective from your experiences in this situation, and help me determine if I am making the right decision. [more inside]

Starting my own arts non-profit: how nutty?

My adult life has been split between art (performing arts) and non-profit administration (major donor fundraising). I'm now approaching a point where I want to merge the two and create my own arts nonprofit. My intent is to start small. I guess I'm hoping to split half my time as a fundraiser/grantwriter/administrator and half my time running the program. Am I crazy? I dont think this thing will officially launch before the next year or two, so please pretend this will happen in a decent economy. I think I have a good service to provide, access to strong potential boardmembers, etc. Thanks, hive.
