How do I start my own church in California? If L. Ron Hubbard can have a church, why can't I? I have tried searching for "how to start a church" on google and askmefi, but no luck. I think there's something about filing a 501c non-profit form, but there are a lot of forms for similar things (non-profit raffle? commercial coventurer?? what the crap?).

You may have heard of MinnPost.com, voiceofsandiego.org and propublica.com.
All are nonprofit websites dedicated to quality journalism.
All must have had their start somewhere.
I’ve had a similar idea. I’m an editor at a small local daily, although I’ve had a long stint as a pretty good political reporter. Three reporter friends and myself are looking at founding our own nonprofit online-only journalism organization dedicated to state politics. I should note that all of us have some pretty strong credentials and between us have won a number of awards, so we know we can handle the reporting end of this venture.

I'm looking for a web-based app (free or otherwise) or a hosted app which will handle membership for a non-profit / club. It needs to provide different membership levels, handle payments (via PayPal or Google Checkout), and provide some method for allowing members to renew or upgrade their memberships, change their info as needed, etc. It does not need to be free, even though that would be nice.

The Non-Profit I'm working for is looking into the issues of technology and culture. That is.. how technology effects culture, how it changes the way we think, learn, etc. Despite this seeming a rather obvious topic, I'm having a hard time finding good research sources. My guess is I'm not asking the question properly, but that doesn't change what I need to know.

We want to form a 'for profit' trade association. Several of us (in my industry) think we should be represented by a trade association, but all the research I've done so far points to associations as 'non-profit' organizations. Is there any reason why a commercial company can't set itself up as an industry association and sell memberships and attempt to represent it's members ? (in marketing and regulation and public education, etc.)

If you have filed for exemption with the IRS for a nonprofit you are starting and your status is pending while they review, I understand that you can still solicit donations and generally when your exemption is granted your exempt status applies retroactively to your date of incorporation. But how are the donor's charitable contributions treated? Can they deduct the tax year they donate or do they have to wait until the tax year in which exemption is granted (if the pending period lasts until a new tax year)? Or is it also retroactive and they would have to amend their previous tax return once the nonprofit gains exempt status?
