I'm a freelance reporter who just finished a multi-part series for a nonprofit news organization. Now I'd like to turn it into an ebook. I am not savvy about rights, commissions, etc., and neither is my editor/publisher. What do we need to know to negotiate a fair revenue split? [more inside]
How useful is Twitter these days? I work in an advocacy-type job at the intersection between law, politics and a giant, sometimes heavily regulated industry. I really need to strengthen my connections, and I'd also like to raise my organization's profile online. Social media is obviously one part of the arsenal -- but is Twitter a worthwhile starting point? I only have so much time in the day to devote to this, and I could instead focus my efforts on blogging for a moderately well-trafficked niche group blog. I'm not so much interested here in driving traffic to our website, but rather to entering more fully into the conversation online.

Getting a raise at a non-profit: I have looked online to no avail for any particular advice targeting non-profits. I don't know if there is a different approach to use or not. But there seem to be particular challenges related to this type of organization. For instance, most of my colleagues do it for the love of the cause, myself included, and we are all underpaid and overworked. Also, I am well aware that our organization is struggling financially. I recently accepted an offer for a spot in a full time MPP program from a very decent, non-Ivy school. My funding (per an assistantship or researcher position) reduces the total tuition to approximately $3000, and the program provides an allowance for an unpaid or poorly paid summer internship. I have enough money saved to avoid going into debt if I work part time. I want to offset the opportunity costs of two years outside of work by making myself as employable as possible. [more inside]
I'm between jobs and looking to spend some of my time volunteering with a non-profit to do substantive work that involves my professional skills. How do I best approach them to propose this? [more inside]
Because of a story in the newspaper, I discovered that a local nonprofit will soon have a job opening that sounds like a perfect fit for me. The job is not posted on their website yet, but I was thinking of emailing someone there anyway just to let them know how interested I am in the organization, the job, and the changes they've made to make the job possible. Will this result in them looking more favorably on me when the job is posted, or in them looking at me as over-eager and unprofessional?
I want to transform my department's social media team into the campus experts on social media. What are the books, workshops, tools, websites and communities I should be looking into? [more inside]

Your job requires you to do multimedia work from time to time but gives you only a standard Windows install with Office and MS Paint to do it with. Installing anything new requires a call to IT. Your nonprofit employer currently has no budget to buy you the software you need. What cheap or free utilities, plug-ins or browser extensions do you install while waiting for the clouds to open and copies of, say, Adobe CS Master Collection and Final Cut Pro to fall from the sky? I am in the process of interviewing for a mid-level program/project coordinator position at a non-profit in New York City, and I believe I will be offered the position. I work for a small non-profit in WI and the organization is about to close its doors. Because we are so small, the non-profit has not had to pay into the state UI fund. I don't know what that means for my ability to collect unemployment. I am going to see an unemployment office as soon as possible, but I would appreciate any info from MeFi about whether there are ways I am eligible to receive benefits, if there are specific questions I should ask the UI office, and whether there are other state or federal benefits available to me as I look for a new job.

I work at at a non-profit art museum on a state university campus. Though it's officially (legally, too, I guess) a museum, it feels more like a commercial art gallery. Does it violate our non-profit status when the founder buys a large number of art from each of the shows we do? I want to know so, when I begin to write grants, and if a potential funder asks, I can answer knowing where the question is going. Thanks.
