501(c)(3) "donations" that aren't

I perform vocal music with a 50-member nonprofit chorale. We are asked to "donate" $200 per year in order to participate...but it really doesn't appear to be an optional fee at all. Is this legal? And how do I notify the org leadership of the extreme problem I'm having with the way they handle this? [more inside]

FilemakerPro to .CSV to NeonCRM - How to Excel?

Excel experts and fundraising professionals, ho! I work for a small non-profit and we're currently transitioning from a janky FilemakerPro database to NeonCRM. I have all the data spread across three spreadsheets and my brain is collapsing trying to figure out the best way to deal with it. What's the best/most efficient way to compare data between three separate spreadsheets, and manipulate it into the format I need for this import? All the necessary/boring details lie within! How do I best navigate being edged out of a professional opportunity?

Non-profit: I found a grant and brought in two colleagues in my department to choose what we would propose for the grant, to write it and implement it. One of these colleagues who previous to this I would have described as a friend also has completely taken it over and basically pushed me out of the process. How do I get involved again? Or should I just say hindsight is 20/20 and let go of it all? [more inside]

Most effective ways to market field trips to teachers?

I need help getting people to sign up for my programs, and I've hit a roadblock. I develop and deliver field trips to school groups, in theory it’s great. In practice, nobody is signing up for field trips and my job is on the line. I am good at developing and delivering programs, but I am a novice at marketing. What is an operating budget?

I recently asked someone at work for our operating budget for the purpose of registering for software discounts. I was given a number and it didn't quite make sense to me. I think that there may be at least two definitions of 'operating budget'. The workplace in question is a 501c(3) non-profit if that changes the definition. What would be tallied to make up the operating budget?

No-frills, no-hassle third-party fundraising

Let's say I really care about some charity. I'd like to do an online fundraising drive---with premiums that I send to donors. FlakyFilter: How To Get No-Show Volunteers To Show Up?

I recently started organizing volunteer orientations for a local charity. These orientations take place at long-time volunteers' homes over dinner and require quite a bit of prep work by the hosts. They are optional orientations - i.e., for newcomers who have expressed interest in a more active role with the nonprofit. So far, about 30% of the new people who RSVP 'yes' are complete no-shows. How can I reduce this amount, AND how can I not feel pissed off at people who cancel with no or little notice? Snowflakery inside... [more inside]

Need a volunteer management solution for a one-day, multi site event

I'm working with a Community Foundation that is planning our (first) annual Volunteer Day in our town. We're working with other non-profit organizations in town to design volunteer activities which can be completed on a designated day, we will basically be the central clearing point for these activities and volunteers looking to participate, as well as do the publicity / awareness raising etc. I have taken on finding a solution to help us connect activities to volunteers and vice versa. I've done some online research and found a few options, but none are ideal, and so I turn to the hive mind for ideas and insight. Ideally, I am looking for an online tool which allows me to set up 20 or so 'projects', each with different time and skill requirements, and organizers, and allows participants to sign up to one that interests them. special requests and snowflake details inside [more inside]

Getting a raise at a non-profit: I have looked online to no avail for any particular advice targeting non-profits. I don't know if there is a different approach to use or not. For instance, most of my colleagues do it for the love of the cause, myself included, and we are all underpaid and overworked. Also, I am well aware that our organization is struggling financially. Does this violate our 501(c)(3) status?

I work at at a non-profit art museum on a state university campus. Though it's officially (legally, too, I guess) a museum, it feels more like a commercial art gallery. Does it violate our non-profit status when the founder buys a large number of art from each of the shows we do? I want to know so, when I begin to write grants, and if a potential funder asks, I can answer knowing where the question is going. Thanks.

Jumpstarting a lasting fund, without the pesky

I would like to create a non-profit fund / fundraising org earmarked towards jumpstarting community centers. I've heard that rather than trying to create a non-profit, it might be best to partner with an existing non-profit with similar interests, and see if they'd "host" the fund I want to create / help with the legal aspects, while allowing me to earmark and oversee the fund. I intend to do regular fundraising, and hope to create a lasting fund that attracts bequests. Does anyone know about the legalities involved here? Any advice as to how I might want to approach such a project?

Starting my own arts non-profit: how nutty?

My adult life has been split between art (performing arts) and non-profit administration (major donor fundraising). I'm now approaching a point where I want to merge the two and create my own arts nonprofit. My intent is to start small. I guess I'm hoping to split half my time as a fundraiser/grantwriter/administrator and half my time running the program. Am I crazy? I dont think this thing will officially launch before the next year or two, so please pretend this will happen in a decent economy. I think I have a good service to provide, access to strong potential boardmembers, etc. Thanks, hive.
