Let's assume I can get training in anything I want and have a supportive boss who will allow me to "practice" any skill I choose in my current position as a director. What skills should I learn to make the next big leap to head boss at a non-profit? [more inside]

I work in communications for a large nonprofit, and I've been tasked with coming up with a way to track the time people spend working on various projects. Previous attempts to do this without software have proven unwieldy. Help me. [more inside]
I recently asked someone at work for our operating budget for the purpose of registering for software discounts. I was given a number and it didn't quite make sense to me. I think that there may be at least two definitions of 'operating budget'. The workplace in question is a 501c(3) non-profit if that changes the definition. What would be tallied to make up the operating budget?
Let's say I really care about some charity. I'd like to do an online fundraising drive---with premiums that I send to donors. I'm not affiliated with the charity, or I am but this drive is an independent, personal initiative. Either way, the charity isn't involved except for the happy day when they get a check. Is there some online service that makes all this easy for me? [more inside]

I need a grant writing intern for my non-profit. Possibly several. Do you know what universities have good green technology or permaculture degree tracks that would be a good place to start looking? (many snowflakes inside) [more inside]
I work at a non profit and have been running an internship program for two years. It is funded annually, but on no set schedule. I am prevented from insisting on a schedule or requiring a reasonable gap between funding date and start date. I am expected to just pull the program together within weeks of the donation being received. With a vague start date and no selection schedule, how do I advertise and maintain a pool of candidates? Please help me come up with a creative solution! [more inside]
I recently started organizing volunteer orientations for a local charity. These orientations take place at long-time volunteers' homes over dinner and require quite a bit of prep work by the hosts. They are optional orientations - i.e., for newcomers who have expressed interest in a more active role with the nonprofit. So far, about 30% of the new people who RSVP 'yes' are complete no-shows. How can I reduce this amount, AND how can I not feel pissed off at people who cancel with no or little notice? Snowflakery inside... [more inside]
What resources are there in the US that enable kids to take, say, a 3-6 month training course in programming, and then help with entry-level job placement after successful completion of the program? I used to live in Argentina and became familiar with http://program.ar/ which does this (very well) there, and want to find some similar programs in the United States.
I'm working with a Community Foundation that is planning our (first) annual Volunteer Day in our town. We're working with other non-profit organizations in town to design volunteer activities which can be completed on a designated day, we will basically be the central clearing point for these activities and volunteers looking to participate, as well as do the publicity / awareness raising etc. I have taken on finding a solution to help us connect activities to volunteers and vice versa. I've done some online research and found a few options, but none are ideal, and so I turn to the hive mind for ideas and insight. Ideally, I am looking for an online tool which allows me to set up 20 or so 'projects', each with different time and skill requirements, and organizers, and allows participants to sign up to one that interests them. special requests and snowflake details inside [more inside]

Getting a raise at a non-profit: I have looked online to no avail for any particular advice targeting non-profits. I don't know if there is a different approach to use or not. But there seem to be particular challenges related to this type of organization. For instance, most of my colleagues do it for the love of the cause, myself included, and we are all underpaid and overworked. Also, I am well aware that our organization is struggling financially. I work at at a non-profit art museum on a state university campus. Though it's officially (legally, too, I guess) a museum, it feels more like a commercial art gallery. Does it violate our non-profit status when the founder buys a large number of art from each of the shows we do? I want to know so, when I begin to write grants, and if a potential funder asks, I can answer knowing where the question is going. Thanks.
Posting for a friend: She has an interview next week for a part-time non-profit development/social media job. She has pretty good answers for generic job interview type questions, but what kinds of questions might she prepare for that are more specific to the field? What kinds of skills should she be highlighting? [more inside]
My non-profit holds its gala benefit soon. In lieu of our usual clipboards-and-pens silent auction, we were thinking of using an internet service such as Bidding for Good. Good idea? Bad idea? [more inside]

I've been invited to emcee a gala dinner for a nonprofit. They are paying me for my talents, but I don't have anything other than random guesses about how much to charge, and their initial offer was basically "money is no object," which actually make it harder for me. Are there any resources out there that can help me narrow down a range to work from?

How do we get a (music) celebrity to help promote an event in a YouTube-type video? Our community nonprofit is having a month-long event in June, and my daydream is to get some (recognizable) musician/band in a video that we could post on our very popular Facebook page. Ideally, he/she would say something like, "If I weren't on tour in [wherever] right now, I'd definitely be at [event name]! Don't miss it!" How do I even attempt this? I'm in a medium-sized city on the East Coast.

I would like to create a non-profit fund / fundraising org earmarked towards jumpstarting community centers. I've heard that rather than trying to create a non-profit, it might be best to partner with an existing non-profit with similar interests, and see if they'd "host" the fund I want to create / help with the legal aspects, while allowing me to earmark and oversee the fund. I intend to do regular fundraising, and hope to create a lasting fund that attracts bequests. Does anyone know about the legalities involved here? Any advice as to how I might want to approach such a project?

My place of employment has a long and convoluted phone tree that our clients have to wade through when they call in. My adult life has been split between art (performing arts) and non-profit administration (major donor fundraising). I'm now approaching a point where I want to merge the two and create my own arts nonprofit. My intent is to start small. I guess I'm hoping to split half my time as a fundraiser/grantwriter/administrator and half my time running the program. Am I crazy? I dont think this thing will officially launch before the next year or two, so please pretend this will happen in a decent economy. I think I have a good service to provide, access to strong potential boardmembers, etc. Thanks, hive.
