I am about to send off my application for a job posting for what is my DREAM position. It is a 3-month paid internship with a major medical humanitarian aid organization. This is an office-based administrative position in a major Canadian city, and seems to have a lot of overlap in tasks with some of their other permanent positions, as well as their field-based positions. In terms of skills, experience, and interests, I feel as though I am a strong candidate for the position. [more inside]

St. Louis friend trained as a writer and filmmaker wants to use his skills to help people in need/suffering. Does anyone in the area (the city, or St. Louis County) know of any volunteering options for him? He already has an office job, but career suggestions would be welcome, though I think volunteering is more of an immediate interest. National and local organizations anyone knows of in the area are welcome. Thanks!
Hello, Metafilter! Long time lurker (10 years), first time poster. To sum it up- after a failed stint as an AmeriCorps VISTA (6 months) following graduation from the University of South Carolina with a degree in International Studies and a minor in Economics- I have spent a year unemployed, a year as a bank teller, another year unemployed, and over a year as a server and a tax season as a tax pro at H&R block. I went back to school during the time as a server to get enough credits to sit for the CPA (one computer apps class away from obtaining accounting certificate at a local community college). Moved back to SC and spent from 07/12-06/13 as an Assistant Service Manager at a car dealership (hated it because A, I have asthma and missed a ton of work due to complications from working outside, B, I knew nothing about cars, and C, I am not a fan of Customer Service/commission pay). I'm graduating from college this spring and I'm very interested in working with an international NGO. I know there are organizations monitoring elections, promoting democracy, installing networks and computers in villages, interviewing rebels and citizens… but how can I work for one? Ideally I'd like to travel a lot, or at least be based somewhere abroad (not the US). [more inside]
I have an interview this week for an assistant volunteer coordinator position at a local organization. I've done some volunteer management before but haven't had a position like this. If YOU have, or do, what's it like? Any advice for an interview?

I'm a non-profit development professional who enjoys my current job fundraising for a regional cultural organization (actually one of the largest, most stable non-profits in our area). Unfortunately, I can no longer afford the non-profit salary. Plese help direct me to the resources to find a place in the for-profit world. [more inside]
Nonprofit career professionals: Is it advised to focus within one sector of the industry, like the arts, or is it okay to move into different sectors through out your career? [more inside]
I'm a recent college grad who has been playing the "unemployment blues" for the past 5 months and have had no real success finding full-time work. However, I've recently had two excellent interviews for an entry-level administrative assistant position at a small non-profit organization in New York (where I currently live with my parents). I'm not sure if this is the kind of work I would be able to do for more than a year (well aware that most people don't necessarily enjoy their jobs and generally have to haul ass in the early stages), and the pay is mediocre, but I am entering student loan repayment soon ($80k+ worth of debt) and need a steady paying job ASAP. Please offer me some perspective from your experiences in this situation, and help me determine if I am making the right decision. [more inside]
