Transitioning from profit to not-for-profit at 40: what's negotiable?

After a decade in for-profit marketing in a secondary city, I'm being seriously considered for something close to a dream job in Toronto. The main issue is that there'd be a major salary drop -- from CAD$75,000 a year to sub-CAD$50,000, and I'd be moving from a place where the cost of living is low, and my house is mortgage-free and paid off, to, well, Toronto. My current location is not commutable to Toronto. What can I negotiate with my (hopeful) employer to help make up the difference? [more inside]

I want to work for an international NGO, but how?

I'm graduating from college this spring and I'm very interested in working with an international NGO. I know there are organizations monitoring elections, promoting democracy, installing networks and computers in villages, interviewing rebels and citizens… but how can I work for one? Ideally I'd like to travel a lot, or at least be based somewhere abroad (not the US). [more inside]

Making the Most of a Full-time MPP Program

I recently accepted an offer for a spot in a full time MPP program from a very decent, non-Ivy school. My funding (per an assistantship or researcher position) reduces the total tuition to approximately $3000, and the program provides an allowance for an unpaid or poorly paid summer internship. I have enough money saved to avoid going into debt if I work part time. I want to offset the opportunity costs of two years outside of work by making myself as employable as possible. [more inside]

How much should I charge to MC a gala fundraising dinner?

I've been invited to emcee a gala dinner for a nonprofit. They are paying me for my talents, but I don't have anything other than random guesses about how much to charge, and their initial offer was basically "money is no object," which actually make it harder for me. Are there any resources out there that can help me narrow down a range to work from?

Do silicon valley style nonprofits (or for-the-public-good companies) exist?

Can NGOs get beyond the dollars and cents of fundraising and really be creative, dynamic, fun places to work? Is it wrong to want to work for a Threadless/startup-style nonprofit? Also: Am I just asking the wrong questions? [more inside]

NGOs in Francophone Africa?

I'm looking for a human rights NGO to work for in the Francophone world. My preference is for a Francophone Arab country, but I'm open to any option that would be a good work experience. Does anyone have experience or other knowledge of NGOs they would recommend? [more inside]
