Good nonprofit that works on environmental lead in Chicago?

I would like to donate some money to a non-profit that works on issues related to environmental lead in Chicago, especially as it affects children. Advocacy, lobbying, policy work, education, direct lead remediation work, or any other kind of work on this issue would fit the bill. Who should I donate to? [more inside]

Help my nonprofit survive the end of Windows XP!

I work for a nonprofit and we have several computers used by our students. They run Windows XP and I know that their decline and fall is probably inevitable. There is a specific old version of a program that we use which is not compatible with newer versions of Windows. Help me make a plan: I need to find a new literacy program that suits our needs, find a way to make this 10+ year old program compatible with newer computers, or at the very least keep these computers semi-functional as long as possible. How to ethically spend/allocate leftover grant funds?

Hi. I work at a nonprofit organization, and we have a non-governmental grant that pays for my salary and program expenses. It's coming up on the end of the grant year, and I have leftover funds. I'm not sure I agree with a directive coming from my boss about how to allocate the leftover funds in the budget. I need some people with on-the-ground nonprofit experience to tell me if my ethical line is stricter than the general best practices one. [more inside]

How to Shop for Directors & Officers Liability Insurance for a NonProfit

I'm doing some work for a small but growing nonprofit based in the State of Wisconsin. They are looking into getting Directors and Officers Liability Insurance and asked me if I knew of a good policy provider. The providers I'm familiar with would not work with a group this small (small board, Executive Director, volunteers...donation receipts about $200K+). I'm unsure of how best to vet a provider that I don't have direct experience with...any advice?

Videoconferencing: One packed room, some remote participants?

I have been tasked to "Put Jane and John on our conference room screen and put all of us on their laptop screens" to turn a regular teleconference meeting into a videoconference meeting. The problem is not Jane or John: They are in quiet remote offices with laptops and Skype accounts (or any other videoconferencing accounts you may suggest). The problem is us: Thirty colleagues, backs pressed against the walls, in a long, narrow, noisy conference room built for twenty, with no room to place cameras that will capture more than a few of us. Starting over in your 50s

My friend is looking to change careers and hopefully move into the nonprofit world. Is a career change possible at her age? What should she be doing? What types of positions should she be looking for? She's in her 50s and has a legal background. She can practice law and formerly worked in legal publishing, but she hasn't worked in law for decades. She's spent the last decade or so as an analyst at a financial company.

Canadian volunteering for a year in the US for a religious nonprofit

My girlfriend and I will be volunteering at a mountain retreat center/camp in the US for a year. This retreat center is a religious nonprofit affiliated with a mainline protestant denomination and has existed since the '60s (and I have visited it many times before, as a member of that denomination). We will be paid a stipend of $550 a month each and have benefits like room & board, health and dental insurance...or at least I, as a US citizen, will get them. What does my girlfriend, as a Canadian citizen, need to provide to US immigration (specifically DHS at the border) to have the greatest chance of receiving that stipend and/or benefits? [more inside]

How do I avoid burnout in my new position at a non-profit

I am a detail oriented, personable woman in my late twenties that really likes what I do. I work for a small non-profit that is highly respected in the mid-size town that I live in. Before I had this job I worked in DC on Capitol Hill for several years in a demanding job. Last fall I was promoted to Associate Director. We also got a new Executive Director at that time (he's the one that promoted me). He is a good guy, and I enjoy the environment that I work in. That said... in the past two weeks I have started to feel a little burnout. [more inside]

How to address burnout and work overload when you're the sole employee?

Assessment tool for grantseekers: personality quiz edition?

I am currently working with a local nonprofit to create a new grant program focused on community engagement.
