Being the yesman for privately funded project, how can I make this work?

I work at a non profit and have been running an internship program for two years. It is funded annually, but on no set schedule. I am prevented from insisting on a schedule or requiring a reasonable gap between funding date and start date. I am expected to just pull the program together within weeks of the donation being received. With a vague start date and no selection schedule, how do I advertise and maintain a pool of candidates? Please help me come up with a creative solution! [more inside]

FlakyFilter: How To Get No-Show Volunteers To Show Up?

I recently started organizing volunteer orientations for a local charity. These orientations take place at long-time volunteers' homes over dinner and require quite a bit of prep work by the hosts. They are optional orientations - i.e., for newcomers who have expressed interest in a more active role with the nonprofit. So far, about 30% of the new people who RSVP 'yes' are complete no-shows. How can I reduce this amount, AND how can I not feel pissed off at people who cancel with no or little notice? Snowflakery inside... [more inside]

Managing membership for a small organization?

A friend runs a small professional organization with about 60-80 members, and is looking for a way to more easily manage membership. She is hoping to find software or a web service designed to do these things: Right now members are paying by cheque through the mail, and it's a lot of paperwork. I imagine there is an inexpensive web service out there that would be perfect for this. Can you recommend anything? We're in Canada, if it matters. Thanks!

Transitioning from profit to not-for-profit at 40: what's negotiable?

After a decade in for-profit marketing in a secondary city, I'm being seriously considered for something close to a dream job in Toronto. The main issue is that there'd be a major salary drop -- from CAD$75,000 a year to sub-CAD$50,000, and I'd be moving from a place where the cost of living is low, and my house is mortgage-free and paid off, to, well, Toronto. My current location is not commutable to Toronto. What can I negotiate with my (hopeful) employer to help make up the difference? [more inside]

Teaching low-income kids in the US how to program

What resources are there in the US that enable kids to take, say, a 3-6 month training course in programming, and then help with entry-level job placement after successful completion of the program? Need a volunteer management solution for a one-day, multi site event

I'm working with a Community Foundation that is planning our (first) annual Volunteer Day in our town. We're working with other non-profit organizations in town to design volunteer activities which can be completed on a designated day, we will basically be the central clearing point for these activities and volunteers looking to participate, as well as do the publicity / awareness raising etc. I have taken on finding a solution to help us connect activities to volunteers and vice versa. I've done some online research and found a few options, but none are ideal, and so I turn to the hive mind for ideas and insight. Ideally, I am looking for an online tool which allows me to set up 20 or so 'projects', each with different time and skill requirements, and organizers, and allows participants to sign up to one that interests them. special requests and snowflake details inside [more inside]

Easy-to-use forum solution, maybe a suite of apps, other than GoogleApps

Our non-profit [a Quaker Meeting] is looking to expand our online offerings, both internally--for our members and attenders [private forums, and possibly more real-time social features], and also a more friendly and informative public-facing website than we have now. Any of the solutions should be easy to administer for people with middling to pretty good internet/computer knowledge. We are looking at Google Apps for non-profits, but so far, I'm finding their Google Groups a pretty poor approximation of a web forum. So I'd like to know what other options may be out there for us. We'd ideally like a full-featured suite of products that can grow with us, but if we build something piecemeal, are probably most interested in first having a user-friendly but robust forum. Free is ideal, inexpensive could be considered, based on features. We are a 501(c)(3). Would love pointers to software or cloud solutions, but am also interested in exploring groups that are already using such software [if they are public].

Career Crisis- How to get hired after only 2 months at current job?

Hello, Metafilter! Long time lurker (10 years), first time poster. To sum it up- after a failed stint as an AmeriCorps VISTA (6 months) following graduation from the University of South Carolina with a degree in International Studies and a minor in Economics- I have spent a year unemployed, a year as a bank teller, another year unemployed, and over a year as a server and a tax season as a tax pro at H&R block. I went back to school during the time as a server to get enough credits to sit for the CPA (one computer apps class away from obtaining accounting certificate at a local community college). Moved back to SC and spent from 07/12-06/13 as an Assistant Service Manager at a car dealership (hated it because A, I have asthma and missed a ton of work due to complications from working outside, B, I knew nothing about cars, and C, I am not a fan of Customer Service/commission pay). Me--planning to quit job. Work--planning grant funded projects for me.

[For folks that work in the non-profit sector] I feel at a loss for what to do. I work for a non-profit that I have been planning to leave for some time. I am taking the GRE this month, applying to schools and even applying for school-compatible part time jobs. At the same time, my non-profit is trying to pull itself out of a budget hole by applying for a multitude of grants. Most of the deliverables are things that I am supposed to deliver and the only other person left to deliver would be my immediate supervisor. I like my supervisor and don't know how she would even get all the work done if I left. My work would not be easily transferred to a new hire. I feel overcome with guilt as each new grant proposal goes out the door because I'm not planning on being around to do this work. I know it would be really dumb to say that before I have an offer in hand for school or a new job. What is the right thing to do? Should I let them build their plans around me when I'm not sure I'll be around? [more inside]

End-of-budget-year dilemma: too MUCH money

I have a pretty hefty surplus in my nonprofit project budget this year, and I have been told to spend it all, because otherwise it would go back to the funder. We're talking about $20K. We did our work, we met our goals, we provided what we said we'd provide. It just took less money than anticipated. I feel dirty and guilty about blowing this much money on "stuff" that isn't what we said we'd spend it on. I have never had a budget at all before, much less a surplus, so I may be a little naive about how the (nonprofit?) world works. Can you please give me some thoughts about how to view this in a way that doesn't feel icky? Am I just being silly and this is normal practice? Bonus points if you have suggestions on what to spend it on. [more inside]

To tweet or not to tweet

How useful is Twitter these days? I work in an advocacy-type job at the intersection between law, politics and a giant, sometimes heavily regulated industry. I really need to strengthen my connections, and I'd also like to raise my organization's profile online. Social media is obviously one part of the arsenal -- but is Twitter a worthwhile starting point? I only have so much time in the day to devote to this, and I could instead focus my efforts on blogging for a moderately well-trafficked niche group blog. I'm not so much interested here in driving traffic to our website, but rather to entering more fully into the conversation online.
