YANML. Non-Profit Organization A is preparing to fund a research project at German Public Learning Institution B. In the course of drafting the contract that governs this funding, B will not allow the lawyers at A to talk directly with the lawyers at B. Rather, B maintains that their attorneys are only consulted on decisions that B otherwise makes through a management department. The process has been pleasant and this is not borne out of conflict. Is this barrier to direct legal discussion a common arrangement for German/European public learning institutions? [more inside]
I need help getting people to sign up for my programs, and I've hit a roadblock. I develop and deliver field trips to school groups, in theory it’s great. In practice, nobody is signing up for field trips and my job is on the line. I am good at developing and delivering programs, but I am a novice at marketing. What are your favorite resources to teach me how to market towards and/or interact with classroom teachers? [more inside]
Help me decide when it is ok to be obstinate and disagreeable, and if that is the right route for me. I work for an incredibly small non-profit and it’s driving me crazy. They hired me to make changes and it feels like most everything I do is wrong and re-rationalized back into the “old way” of doing things. I want to get shit done! However, I have a history of agreeing to all suggestions from authority figures, and don’t want to get fired for doing something The Board [my supervisors] disagrees with. [more inside]
A friend is considering starting a non-profit. Since the beginning, he's been thinking it will be a non-profit but recently, someone who specializes in helping develop social entrepreneurs told him that type structure would be better for this reason ... [more inside]
I may have the opportunity to take over a non-profit in which the old ED was run out of town for essentially burning all bridges very publicly, alienating important political connections, significantly damaging the reputation of the organization, as well as losing about 50% of donors along the way. All in about 5 years. So two questions... [more inside]
I am a known financially developmentally delayed idiot. No really. I hate money. And I want to start a music and art festival on a slim budget and start building a framework to be able to raise funds for it and keep it all clean and kosher and separate while keeping my day job and tax bracket. How do I do this? [more inside]
I'm interested in starting a political non-profit organization. Can anyone recommend some reading material for me? I'm most interested in best practices for structuring the organization, tips on administering meetings, etc. I think most of that information can be broad enough for all non-profits, but I would love any materials that talk specifically about political ones too.
Federal agencies that are fully taxpayer funded are subject to public records requests under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). If a non-profit receives money from the federal government, are the records of that non profit subject to FOIA?

I quit law school (a very prestigious, top five school) four years ago and have been working in education ever since (first as an aide for Autistic children, then as a substitute teacher for two years). In this time, my student loans have been accruing interest and keeping me up at night. I can qualify for loan forgiveness programs as long as I work for a non-profit or a school. Unfortunately, the work I was doing for the past four years did not count because I worked for private companies that contracted out to schools. For many reasons,(see below) I would now like to break into grant writing. I have written three successful grant proposals in my career (one for an educational outreach program in college, one for a Fulbright Grant, and one for an international NGO). I am currently strengthening my grant writing skills by taking webinars and utilizing other free online resources. How can I present myself as a viable candidate for these grant writing jobs? And how do I explain the many changes of direction on my resume and the long winding road I took to get here? [more inside]

The Non-Profit I volunteer at has serious membership woes. Right now there's just a couple members left, and for this reason and life reasons, we are stepping down, but we don't want to just give up our cause. As such, we are trying to set up a 2 night, 2 day weekend getaway (tentative dates: May 16-May 18) in South Florida for 20 adults to hopefully get new board members and officers. Difficulty level: $5,000 budget. Also, I'm starting to think that perhaps this isn't the way to go? Advice anyone? [more inside]
After a decade in for-profit marketing in a secondary city, I'm being seriously considered for something close to a dream job in Toronto. The main issue is that there'd be a major salary drop -- from CAD$75,000 a year to sub-CAD$50,000, and I'd be moving from a place where the cost of living is low, and my house is mortgage-free and paid off, to, well, Toronto. My current location is not commutable to Toronto. What can I negotiate with my (hopeful) employer to help make up the difference? [more inside]

Hi everyone- I have a friend who is close to an offer at for-profit company in NYC, but his background is in non-profit. He wants to ask for a salary in the range that his research shows is a fair for his experience level and the industry standard. However, this amount is nearly $25,000 higher than his current non-profit salary, and he is afraid that revealing his salary history will not allow him to negotiate a fair rate. Does anyone have advice or has been through a similar transition themselves? Thank you in advance for your assistance. -FH

Last October, I started a charity that since April I have won some good grants, grown over the last three months from 10 to 54 clients. Well enough, I am happy to continue working on it as a volunteer and board member. But, it doesn't need full-time employees. I have got some consulting work beginning in November. I would like to find a full-time job. Explaining "I did this, it is going well, now I need some money" is difficult. I am trying to find a non-profit or NGO career consultant in England or the EU to help sort this all out. Can you help?
I work with a local non-profit advocacy organization that is working on changing behaviors (promoting walking & biking in town). We charge for membership, but recently someone suggested we expand our membership by making it a pay-what-you-can (or want) sort of system and possibly we would have more cash and volunteers to work with. Can someone point me to articles/books/anything about how has worked for other non-profits or businesses?

An non-profit organization with staff and volunteers has been non-union for its existence. Because of proposed changes by its board of directors, staff have applied to unionize. Some staff perform the same tasks as volunteers, but volunteers perform the overwhelming majority of the core work of the organization. The ratio of volunteers to staff is about 35 to 1. First, can a non profit unionize? And second, if it becomes a union shop, what will be the status of the volunteers?
Hi, I am helping out with a young and growing non-profit and they need professional photography to update some of the picture content their new website.
