Do I need a new computer power supply, or can I fix this one?

I have a 650W power supply in my computer that I installed myself back when I asked this question (scroll through the answers on that for most system specs). This morning, the fan on the power supply started making noise. Do I need to replace the supply entirely, or is this something I can fix on my own? [more inside]

Measuring and collecting data on aircraft noise

I need to measure some noise, complicated environmental noise. And store the data. Aircraft noise. (Which is complicated to measure.) Some initial research is turning up that it could be done with equipment like a Real Time Audio Analyzer w 1/3 Octave Band Filters or equivalent. I need to do it separately from city-owned or airport owned equipment. I know there are experts who do this and the analysis is not easy. Best case scenario, there would be an individual or group which could be hired within the Chicagoland area to help. Next best thing would be the ability to collect data ourselves that could be analyzed later. Anyone familiar with the resources and strategies used for residents to collect data on aircraft noise?

What are the major sources of cabin noise in cars?

I've been thinking of buying noise dampening products to make my car interior quieter. It seems that the common approaches are to get spray-on dampener for the wheel wells and peel/stick sheets for areas like the trunk. Some people go nuts and tear the entire car apart to line the entire cabin with sheets. I don't have time or money to go nuts, but I would be willing to be a little crazy to target the top 3 or 4 sources of cabin noise, if I could figure out what they are. [more inside]

name that song

What is this music? It was a piece by a woman composer; I think she had won some sort of important contemporary classical music award or was otherwise highly acclaimed, but the piece had a very postmodern/rockish sensibility. The beginning is a repetitive, kind of Olympo-fascist horn line and I think it resolves into something messier partway through the song. It's very catchy despite being kind of cacophonous. There was a music video for it that somehow involved, I think, horses or pegasi, an MS Paint aesthetic, and things with bright red eyes. [more inside]

A twist on the neighbor-conflict theme

The problems are pretty standard: our next-door neighbors are a mom with four teen-age daughters who seem to thrive on conflict. Their screaming fights and door-slammings keep us awake; their response to polite requests that they not do this have been retaliation (full details inside!). The twist is that we live in a conservative suburb and we are both trans gender, so their social credibility is way higher than ours (in part because of rumors they spread), so it's hard to figure out what action we might take. Is my neighbour being unreasonable or am I just being rude?

Last night, my next door neighbour flipped out and threatened to call the cops for opening and closing our patio door every night. My roommate and I live in a small apartment complex comprised of three buildings, and our suites (ours and the neighbours) are on the ground level, facing the courtyard. Roommate and I are smokers, and while smoking IS allowed on premises, it is NOT allowed indoors. As such, the patio is utilized. We both work later shifts, and get home between 11pm and 12am on days that we work, and go about our own business quietly until we've wound down enough to go to sleep. Winding down time includes smoking. This is unlikely to change anytime soon. What I need help with is either a script for talking to Neighbour (who we've always gotten along with prior to this) before things turn sour, or some perspetive as to why the noise I'm making is unreasonable. Snowflakes ahoy! [more inside]

How to drown out neighbors' loud music?

Neighbors play norteño music really, really loudly all day on many weekend days through the summer. The particular rhythms and thumping quality of the music make it very, very hard to ignore, so I can't read or do anything that requires concentration when it is playing. Asking them to turn it down is not an option. Even closing my windows does nothing, sadly. Are there any particular mechanical ways to cancel/mute very loud noises like this? I would pay almost any money not to go through this again this summer, especially since they seem to have a new sound system that is such that I can't even really sleep through the music, so it just kills my whole day unless I go out.

Looking for a device that plays music when it turns on (automatically)

Wanted: a device that places continuous sounds (music, random noise, mp3s) when it is plugged in. Most devices these days require you to plug it in to the wall AND push a button to turn it on. Goal: I want to make my place less attractive to daytime burglars. I live in a small apartment in a complex where everyone (literally) is at work during the day, and there are daytime burglars who use bump keys. I've already thought through door alarms, etc - but I'm looking for something passive and low effort by me. My idea is to buy a timer with random on/off, and connect a device to it that plays household-like noises. But everything I can think of requires you to turn it on manually (probably for energy saving.) I'm not looking for a PC based solution - want an appliance like device. Like radios from the old days - but ideally with music I can preprogram. Any ideas?

apartment living: is this noise a legit reason to complain?

So I have a wonderful apartment in an old Victorian house. My landlord lives below me. He plays horrible trance-type music frequently but usually not at late night or early morning hours. It's just loud enough that the "waaa waaa waaa" of the bassline is audible in my apartment. It makes me crazy, however hasn't kept me awake (...yet). But, I am a superquiet person who lived for a long time in the country and maybe I do not have realistic ideas about how quiet an apartment should be. Am I in my rights to politely ask them to turn their bass down?

While I love This American Life, The Moth, Story Collider and Radiolab, if I listen to them (or anything else with a storyline) while working, I lose the thread and can't concentrate on either the work or the podcast. A few that do work well for me: Savage Love, Jordan Jesse Go, WTF (to a lesser extent). Any suggestions?

How Can I Silence My Gas :( ?

I'm a 21 years old girly-girl going into my junior year of college. I had a 'simple' surgery in November go horribly awry, leaving me on bed-rest for weeks, and initially fully fecally incontinent. I had to leave the semester early to recuperate, and took the spring semester off, and haven't interacted with my peers since I left. I am supposed to start school again on Tuesday. I'm largely better, and certainly out of diapers. Unfortunately though, gas still passes through me totally freely, and I'm absolutely petrified at the thought of being flatulent in quiet classrooms and lectures, etc. The noise is my only concern. Does anyone have any suggestions for ways I can silence my gas? [more inside]
