How would you make the most of 3.5 days in Patong, Phuket? From what I read there is so many things to do at relatively affordable prices in Patong (scuba diving, bungee jumping, quad biking, horse polo, shooting, kickboxing, island tours, massages, etc, etc!). I would like some recommendations as to which place to go, where to go, when to go, and in what sequence, for 3.5 days.

Who: 4 male adults
Interests: food, outdoors, socialising, nightlife

Give me your recommendations for good bars in Berlin and Hamburg-with a few provisos! We are going to be in Berlin and Hamburg this week and we already have our sightseeing itineraries worked out. We would like to complement this by going to some great bars when we are there. Five people are going.

A few considerations that I hope you can take into account:

-ideally we would like to go to areas that have a concentration of bars/nightlife. A great bar in an isolated area may be great in it's own right, but being in a group, we would like to be in areas where we can bar-hop and move from one place to the next if the current one's not to our taste.

-we would like the bars to be quite lively.

-we like good dive bars, a little bit scuzzy is good.

-we would rather listen to rock music/electro than hard techno.

-we would like to drink nice beer.

-somewhere that sells great food is good.

-hipsterish is both good and bad. If you know a good hipster bar, please tell me, if you know one to avoid, please tell me.

-any other info such as subway stations, best times to visit an area, anything else that you can think of would be most appreciated.

I've been to Berlin before, read a few of the Berlin websites and previous threads but anything you have to add would be great.

What should I do in Boston this weekend?

What non-Halloween things should I do this weekend in Boston? I'm taking my fiancee to Boston for the weekend as an early birthday present. We'll be there from Friday afternoon to Sunday afternoon, staying at the Hilton in the Financial District. Saturday night we're going to the Guster concert at the Orpheum, but what should I do the rest of the time? Neither of us are crazy about Halloween-type activities, but prefer quainter, quieter spots.

I've read the previous threads about restaurants and museums, and I've been to Boston a bunch of times, but never for a semi-romantic weekend. I'm leaning towards dinner in the North End on Friday night, but willing to be persuaded otherwise.

1) What restaurants/bars/lounges/etc. do you recommend in the Financial District?
2) What do you recommend for after-dinner drinks/music/fun on Friday night in the Financial District, Fanueil Hall or North End areas?

Austin TX restaurant recommendations for a group of eight guys getting together for the weekend, esp. BBQ and Mexican. I have an annual trip that brings together a group of guys from around the country to a different spot every year. This year it's Austin TX. We've got a group of eight renting a house outside of town, but will definitely be heading into town for eats and nightlife.

The group tends to lean towards the boisterous, so any recommendations on restaurants? BBQ and Mexican are my preferred Austin cuisine, but open to anything, provided booze can be ordered.

note: I did do my due diligence and found a previous related question, but there's enough turnover in the restaurant biz that I think my Q is still worth asking...

I seem to be moving to smaller and smaller towns.

Things to do in and around Hershey, PA? Do they exist? When I moved here I took care of all the standard Chocolate World / Hershey Park / Hotel Hershey stuff, but now that I'm a month in I'm starting to run out of ideas for fun things to do around here, especially nightlife. Where are the good restaraunts/bars? Specialty grocery stores? Good state parks? What do folks there do for fun? Is there a music scene at all?

Where can we make out with French boys, what foodie things can I not miss in Paris, and what is the Kampa Park of Brussels? In two weeks, I will be in Paris for the first time, with
my family. Then Bruges, Brussels and Amsterdam. I will be on vacation with my parents and my sister. We love seafood and wine and meat and salty snacks and cocktail hour. And cheese. I am obsessed with France/ French cuisine/Food and cooking in general. I spent all winter baking macarons in my tiny Chicago apartment. I have Pierre Herme and Laduree already mapped out for macaron gluttony, and Stohler's for éclairs. My parents are graciously picking up the tab, so being thrifty isn't necessary. We're not looking to have dinner at any Michelin star restaurants- but what foods/restaurants/bakeries/shops should we not miss?

We'll probably have a nightcap after dinner with my parents, but my sister and I would like to go out a few nights. We're both in our mid-20s, both single. She's more mainstream sports bar/ beer/ frat boys, and I'm more offbeat hipster bar/ gin martinis/ hipsters. We will both begrudgingly put up with the other's choice for at least a night. We're staying in the city centers at all locations, and are transit-savvy. Any suggestions?

When we were in Prague, my mother, sister and I had dinner at Kampa Park. We ate outside on the patio right on the river, overlooking the Charles bridge. The food was exquisite, we watched the sunset, and when it got a little chilly, the waiter draped us with
warm blankets. Blankets! It was perfect. It'll be just the ladies for two nights in Brussels, and we'd like to repeat the experience- breathtaking views, superb service, and delicious food. Where should we go?

If you've ever lived in or visited Chicago and had a good time without getting hopelessly lost, you are cordially invited to post in this thread. Needed: an explanation of the grid system, tips and tricks on navigation, and recommendations for how to find the underground music scene, awesome beers, weird things to explore, and the best Chicago-focused blogs. THE GRID SYSTEM: Whenever someone explains this to me I hear "It starts at State and Madison and blah blah blah blah blah and then you'll know exactly where you are!" Pretend I am a five-year old who was dropped on my tender infant cranium.

HACKS: I bought the Moleskine city notebook which is really helpful because I can pour over maps on the El without looking like a total tourist. I'm also thinking of buying a small cheap compass because I have no sense of direction and I'm too shy to ask the classic question "Which way is the lake?" My boyfriend is getting handed a dollar so he can get one of the CTA Tracker apps for his iPhone. Any other recommendations?

BLOGS: A focus on music, especially local/weird/electronic, is nice, and so are blogs that categorize/tag posts by neighborhood. I'm currently reading Cream Team, Chicagoist, The Chicago Weekly (I really like the focus on non-mainstream arts&music, and neighborhood catagorization), and Gaper's Block. Is There a Cubs Game Today? is a single-serving site, not a blog, but invaluable for a Wrigleyville resident like myself.

PLACES TO CHECK OUT: Metafilter let me know that Hopleaf existed, so I'm sure there's lots of wisdom to be shared.

BACKROUND: I've spent time in Chicago but never lived here, I live spitting distance from Wrigley Field, I will likely work in The Loop, yes I will be at the meet-ups, I like booze and electronica and lowbrow art and limited-run/old/obscure movies, I really liked this previous question though I am 21+, I do not drive and hence will be reliant on the CTA, I am kind of nervous about not knowing anything about the local underground music scene and how to penetrate it.

Where can I take my 17 year old cousin for Chicago nightlife? My 17 year old cousin Kemal-Mark is coming to visit me in Chicago, and we have a nicely filled schedule of stuff to do during the day, but now I'm trying to figure out where to take him at night.

He's not interested in booze (and I know that wouldn't be possible anyway), but he does really like danceclubs/discos-- the two of us enjoy going to clubs/etc when we meet at family gatherings in Istanbul or Hamburg, so I'm trying to find someplace around Chicago (northern side, preferably) to go dancing.

I know that a lot of places check identification for entry to insure that a person is of drinking age-- is there a procedure where he can affirm to the doorman/whoever that he's only interested in dancing?

Where can we go? Other nightlife suggestions?

Where can I bring my very picky sister this Saturday night, in NYC? It's embarrassing to ask this question, since i LIVE in nyc, but.... this saturday my sister is coming to visit for the night. I'm totally at a loss as to what we should do. She's pretty uptight and picky, so my usual saturday night of barhopping through Brooklyn with my pack of crazy friends, or catching a concert or baseball game, will not be good. Last time she visited, i took her to a couple of my favorite little divey bars and she was horrified. Another time i brought her to a dance party in the planetarium of the Museum of Natural History. She said there were too many "weird people" there and she wouldnt move from the railing the entire night. so frustrating! She likes the kind of obnoxious places where you have to wait online outside and they only let you in if they like what youre wearing. blech.

so my question is, is there anything fun going on this Saturday, August 1st? Something interesting but not TOO out-there? like, i dont know, a film festival or the opening of a swanky new restaurant..... something that wouldnt make her uncomfortable but would still be fun for me too. It can be anywhere in Manhattan or Northern Brooklyn. My sister is 25. I am 30. We have a little money but cant do anything too extravagant.

Okay, I'm in Kansas City with a group of people for a workshop and we have a wide age-range. Tonight (Friday) and tomorrow night many of us would like to have some fun! Most of us are staying in the Olathe/Overland Park/Lenexa area and aren't sure where to go. Here's what we're looking for. (inside) We have really three age groups that might each like something a little different. This question is really geared mostly for the singles among us.

Guys ages 21-35 - Think testosterone and ladies. (They're all straight as far as I know.)

Guys ages 35-55 - Think sit around and talk old times, maybe listen to live music and maybe the testosterone is still juicing. Come to think of it, a lot like the first group.

Guys ages 55-67 or so - Think something not very loud and not as likely to want to be on the prowl. Though, no doubt, some are! Come to think of it, men are men.

Can you tell we've been bored for 4 days?

So Is the Power & Light district worth the drive and crowd? Is there anything in Johnson County that would be busy with lots of fun people, music, beer/drinks? Of course there has to be. But what are your recommendations?

Newport Beach Bachelor Party Help - Lodging? Bars? A semi-impromptu bachelor party has come into my hands this weekend and the only part that is planned is a chartered fishing trip out of Newport Beach (Ca). I'm trying to figure out that best place to find a hotel for the night in the area that is a)near some nightlife and b) not too nice that we could cram a bunch of dudes into a room but c)nice enough that might have a fridge/internet. The dudes in question won't be too rowdy - there will be no drugged donkeys AFAIK.

Demanding Work Life vs. Nightlife

Woe the aging hipster: How do I fit late night concerts/DJs into a demanding adult working life? Music has always been a big part of my life and something very important to me, but looking back at 2008 it's not something I've been making any time for.

I've got a very demanding job that eats up the hours from 7-7 on weekdays and requires a full night's sleep to be able to keep up with. If I'm out until 2-3am I've basically ruined the next day for all intents and purposes. This means I usually end up skipping those opportunities unless I'm lucky to be on vacation.

Most people in their late twenties tend to lock into a musical rut, listening to the same things they liked when they were younger and not being engaged or involved with new music this way. This also feels a little like an extension of that.

If you're at that phase of your life, how do you make time for music or going out that late? Taking mornings off work? Some kind of power-nap? Loads of caffeine? I'm trying to be pragmatic.

Fun evening places to go in Washington, DC? A friend and I are going to DC on Christmas night to spend a long weekend doing museum-y things during the day which we're really excited about. I can get around the area well, and I have been to DC a few times on business but we don't have any plans for fun things to do after the museums close.
Possibly relevant:
We're staying on Connecticut near L street.
We're too stodgy for the loud and rowdy club scene but not ready to go back to the hotel in the evening with a cup of tea.
We like good drink and good food.
We're open to different types of experiences from the fancy schmancy to the casual and/or funky.

Atlanta nightlife for a new resident: help me make more out of my first Friday night in Atlanta than more unpacking. I just moved to Atlanta after spending four years in Washington, DC, and now that it's Friday it suddenly dawned on me that I have absolutely nothing to do.

I don't have any friends here to hang out with just yet. When faced with a night on my own, in DC, I could just walk over to Adams Morgan or U Street- cool areas of the city with all the bars, music clubs, a few dance joints, late-nite pizza, etc. I've heard some stuff about a place called Little Five Points but I have no idea if that's the same thing.

I'm pretty solid on the on your own/during the day stuff. I know all about and plan to visit the museums, touristy places, etc. But as far as a Friday/Saturday night goes, I'm a single 20-something and it would probably be helpful to my social life and sanity to know where the single 20-somethings are. (I suppose saying I'm a straight white male might be useful for context into what "fun" might be for me in particular.)

I'm looking for real New York area bars that have appeared on current television. Emphasis on "current," otherwise I'd be rummaging through the Sex and the City bin, and on "bar/club." I already have Gossip Girl (so many to choose from, but I went with the thinly-veiled Box) and Mad Men has a scene at PJ Clarke's. Rescue Me films from that tiny "social club" up in Greenpoint. The Office recently featured a nameless, too-spacious Manhattan club (I think it was called Prerogative), but it hardly looked like the real deal. I need other shows, but I'm blanking on current TV that features authentic NYC nightlife that has the natives going, "Hey! I've been there!" 30 Rock? Lipstick Mafia/Cashmere Jungle? How I Met Your Mother? Ugly Betty is set in New York/Queens but is filmed in LA, so I don't know if they referenced and shot any actual venues.

I'm starting a new job as a telephone concierge at a Brand-new upscale retail/housing establishment in Glendale, CA next week—can you help me get my ear to the ground? Clients will be both tenants of the property and casual shoppers, and I am expected to provide expert-level concierge service. However, I'm relatively new in town, and the time I've spent here has been confined to a rather narrow corridor between Echo Park and central Hollywood. My boss is even newer to town than I, and I'd like to make a good impression by hitting the ground running for this gig. Please, I'm eager for all types of suggestions:

- Specifics on LA destinations (restaurants, attractions, events, nightlife, etc. with a focus on upscale, hip, guaranteed solid types of establishments)
- Hints/tips on transportation and navigation
- Blogs, websites, mailing lists, and RSS feeds that will keep me up to date on all of this stuff (I've subscribed to some related AskMe tags already; what am I missing? =o)
- Dead tree rags I should be reading regularly
- Any other information you can provide

Glendale is my first priority, but superior knowledge of all of Los Angeles is my ultimate goal. As mentioned above, I'm working my way through pertinent tags here on AskMe, but if you know of any relevant/obscure questions I might like to see please do mention them. Also, as a sub-question, do you have any tips on this type of job? I've worked as a TTY Relay Operator before and am happy to customer-serve, so I'm not completely unaware of what it entails. Hip Fun Cheap Undiscovered-By-B&T Small Clean Dancing Club?

NYC Nightlife: I need to find the perfect combination of modestly-priced, respectable, and danceable venue in which to have my best friend's bachelorette party. I've never had good luck via publications like New York Magazine or Time Out, and similar AskMe questions are a little out-of-date. The best places have always been found through friends, but unfortunately my social outings have lately been limited to Brooklyn, pubs and house-parties rather than clubs and lounges.

We want to dance and drink, but not in a Chelsea or Meatpacking district club. While it shouldn't be ultra-swanky, it shouldn't be too dive-y either. There will be 12 of us at most, and we need to stick to Manhattan. So far I feel like this is impossible.

Does anyone have any good recommendations? Highest priority is dancing, followed by atmosphere, followed by price. Thanks in advance.

Where can I find a noirish or sleezeball lounge lizard style piano bar (or some approximation of one of these) in Chicago? I'm not sure if "piano bar" is exactly the right term.

But I've been watching a lot of noir films lately and also reading up on lounge music (I'm aware that these are completely disparate sorts of scenes - but either one will do in this case), and I'm yearning for a glamorous-yet-shady place with a beautiful, smoky-voiced woman in a fancy gown at the piano playing some kind of vague jazz music and singing...

The music is probably the most important factor here.

I need a good dive bar in Phoenix. Or two. I'm making my annual Spring Training pilgrimage in a couple weeks, and I need bars to go to when I'm not at baseball games. I'm familiar with Phoenix, my sister's family used to live there, but therein lies the problem: in all the years I've been going down there, I've never really gone out to bars there, because I'm usually hanging with my sister's toddlers.

This year, they're in Tucson, and I've realized I know no bars in Phoenix except the bars that are right around the Mariners' ST facility in Peoria. I'm staying at basically N. Central & Indian School Rd., and according to Yelp there's a few bars in that area, but mostly what I'm looking for is:

Dive-y
Not hipster/scenester
Outdoor seating if possible
More of a rock n roll bar (not necessarily live music, though) vibe than a sports vibe - I'll be getting more than enough sports during my days.

Basically, a good working-class bar with no pretension and a good jukebox (Alice Cooperstown-ish, maybe, without the pre-game frat boys?). Anybody in Phoenix have a fave bar that fits any/most of these?
