At the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, in the modern art/photography section there's a photo (from 1997 or thereabouts) of a man standing in a hotel room in a rainy day. It's a huge print, probably 5'x4', and is lit from behind. It's not on the Met's website. Does anyone know the name of the photo/photographer?

There've been lots of threads about internet dating, but my question is: the internet hook-up. It's something I've been considering recently (I ended a long-term relationship a few months ago and don't think I'd be able to sustain another one right now), but I'm completely inexperienced with it and would like to hear some "testimonials," as it were, before deciding one way or another (and no, I don't mean in a Dear Penthouse way). I'm a young gay guy in NYC who's been considering Craigslist, if that helps to focus your response, but I'd like to hear from people across the spectrum... what are the best and worst scenarios you know of or have been involved in? (And yeah, I know the basic safety tips -- somebody else should know where you're going, etc.) Does it generally work out, or is it more trouble than it's worth?

I have another NYC quirks question (
my first was about straws): Why is it that if a store (such as Banana Republic) has double doors at its entrance, more often than not one of them is locked? According to my observations all it does is impede traffic (which would be problematic if there was a fire).

In the late '90s, I went up to the top of the world trade center several times. One of the more unusual things I noticed was a first world war era biplane sitting on top of a building. I've recently tried to find more information on the unusual decoration and am coming up short. A number of pages reference a
Sopwith Camel sitting on top of
77 water street. The yahoo map location for 77 water street seems too close to the water to match my memory. I though the plane was in the middle of a cluster of buildings.
Are there multiple decorative planes on top of buildings in lower manhattan (not counting helipads)? What other hidden oddities lurk on top of the world's skyscrapers?

I live on a block in browstone Brooklyn, NY. For the last few weeks, the air has been, periodically, filled with a somewhat unpleasant onion-y smell. At first I thought this was someone's bad cooking, but I'm wondering if it's a tree of some kind. Does anyone know what this is? (and no, this is not the horrid smell of the ginko tree, whose "fruit", in the fall, smells like darkroom chemicals...)

"Poetry in Motion" is a program in which the MTA (Manhattan Transit Association) posts short poems in subway trains. A few years ago, they posted an ancient Chinese poem (translated, I think, by a modern American poet). The poem was about an office worker, loaded down with paperwork, looking out the window at distant mountains. I may have some of the details wrong, but the poem had a powerful effect on me. Any ideas of what poem it could be?

I go to NYC at least once a month, and I'm always on the hunt for good vegan restaurants, especially in the East Village area, although I'd love to hear about good eats in other areas of the city as well. I've been to Quintessence, Bonobos, and Caravan of Dreams, and I go gaga over LifeThyme, the grocery/bookstore/cafeteria on 7th Ave and 9th St - they have six inch high veggie pizza that's to die for. Are there any more yummy vegan places I need to know about, and if so, what's the most yummilicious thing on the menu?

I would like to start doing some messy art: oil painting and maybe some metal sculpture. But my NYC apartment doesn't have any space for this. I was wondering if there are any studios in New York City (or Brooklyn) that one can rent (or share) by the hour. I won't be using it enough to rent the space for long periods. I might use it once a week. I might go a month without using it. The perfect place for me would be reasonably priced and stocked with basic equipment, i.e. easles. If there isn't a place like this, someone should start one. Not a bad business model for luring wanabe artists.

In the first half of The French Connection, Gene Hackman's character wakes up after being face-down on a bar (the barman is starting to mop up, very early in the AM it looks like), picks up his hat and walks out of the bar. The bar is underneath what looks like the Brooklyn Bridge. Is/was this a real place? Can anyone ID the intersection? (This is right before he starts following the pink-wearing bicyclist girl & ends up handcuffed to his bed by her - the next scene has Roy Scheider visiting Hackman in his tenement apartment and unlocking the cuffs.)
