I forgot about the ticket because of all my drinking...

So I probably have a warrant out for my arrest on a very old (3 years ) ticket for possible public consumption, in New York City. I want to take care of this, but what repercussions can I expect? Do I go to the courthouse and turn myself in? Will my fine be exorbitantly higher than the ticket?

Additionally, I need to renew my license in Brooklyn before my upcoming birthday. Would I be able to do this if I do in fact have a bench warrant?

This is my first "I screwed up" question, so please take it easy on me!

Thanks!

chopped liver

interested in renting a (very affordable) small space (auditorium, banquet hall, etc) for a "roast" for a friend's birthday in november in new york city. our needs would be simple: some tables, some electricity, and the ability to BYO if necessary. we have the PA already. it DEFINITELY does not have to be "fancy" or "formal" in any way. in fact, the more creative, classic, dive-y and the like would be better; think sammy's roumanian house, or an old high school that rents its big auditoriums out.

we're probably going to be around 30 people; the thing is, we are all students or work in non-profits, so something cheap/affordable really is the priority here (thinking $20 max per person if possible). it also needn't be a weekend night, so perhaps something during the week is cheaper...

thanks!

also, suggestions to roast material (other than reviewing old movies) is also highly welcomed!

The best of Ft. Greene

Just moved to Ft. Greene. What's awesome here? Been here a few days and I love it. I just don't know where to find things yet (coffee shops, groceries, brunch, book shops, fun things, best spots in the park).

I've lived in Bay Ridge, Kensington, and Park Slope over the years, so I'd prefer answers that focus on the area north of Atlantic Ave. And I've already been to Habana Outpost, Moe's and the Fulton Street Mall. Also been to BAM, but I'd like know about other places for art and performance.

I especially would like coffee shop recommendations. Found this great post on a local blog, but things change so quickly and it already seems out of date. For reference, my favorite coffee shop is Heights Coffee - good, quiet music; decent coffee; no kids.

What do you love about Ft. Greene?

Looking for good optometrist for astigmatism contacts in New York, NY I have difficult-to-prescribe-for astigmatisms in both eyes, and am looking for an optometrist who is patient and an expert in toric lenses. I'm willing to go with someone pricier, if I end up actually being about to see with the contact lenses I'm prescribed. :-)
How to deal with an NYC summons when you are moving away?

So last week in Brooklyn, I was a block from my apartment, hopped my bike up on the sidewalk, got stopped by the popo, and now have a pink summons. But I'm moving away in a month! So my court date is in September, and I'm moving across country very soon! When I mentioned this to the officer, he mumbled something about coming in early, but I was a little flustered and neglected to ask him to explain further.

Does anyone here have experience with this? Can I come in to the courthouse and request an earlier court date? I'm a little freaked out, because I saw in an article online that the fine is $100-$500 or 20 days in jail!

Thanks for any advice!

Affordable lodging in New York City?

I'm traveling to New York City in September. Is is possible to find a hotel that is clean, quiet, and safe without spending a fortune? I don't need much space or amenities, but I do need a place where I won't be awakened by street noise or rude guests. I will be visiting people in Upper Manhattan and Brooklyn, so anything that's reasonably close to these spots is fine.

I'm not opposed to staying in New Jersey, or other spots that are not NYC, as long as there is convenient train access in to the early a.m. that doesn't take forever. I will not have a car.

By "not spending a fortune," I mean a hotel under $200/night, preferrably closer to $100/night.

Lux et Veritas : Can my apartment windows be blocked over?

Looks like the one story warehouse next door has been put up FOR SALE. Problem is that if a building goes up in its stead, two of my windows will be covered over. Do I have any rights or say in the matter? I rent an apartment on the top story of a three story tenement in East Williamsburg Brooklyn. The property line is flush with the warehouse. I do have other windows other then the two in question. The NYC Dept. Of Buildings website has nothing about what a friend has termed "air rights" or "sightline" issues. Am I screwed? After 10 years making this neighborhood a real home have the wolves of the rapacious and brutish Real Estate industry arrived at my doorstep to entomb me w/o proper natural light? Any advice would helpful. Thank you.

Moving to NYC.

What neighborhood should I move to in NYC? I'm starting my Master's at Pratt in the fall and my girlfriend is waiting to find out if she's been accepted to Columbia. We'll be moving over the summer to New York, but we just can't figure out what neighborhood to focus on. The most important thing is being someplace safe, but we don't have enough money to be too picky, basically around $1200/mo.

Everyone says that Brooklyn is where it's at, but most of the places we've seen listed are either too expensive or not anywhere we'd want to be. It looks like Inwood/Washington Heights and East Harlem are relatively affordable, but what are the neighborhoods like? Where else should we be looking? Is there a good resource for learning what all the neighborhoods are really like?

A Smell Grows in Brooklyn

I live on a block in browstone Brooklyn, NY. For the last few weeks, the air has been, periodically, filled with a somewhat unpleasant onion-y smell. At first I thought this was someone's bad cooking, but I'm wondering if it's a tree of some kind. Does anyone know what this is? (and no, this is not the horrid smell of the ginko tree, whose "fruit", in the fall, smells like darkroom chemicals...)

Studio Space in NYC

I would like to start doing some messy art: oil painting and maybe some metal sculpture. But my NYC apartment doesn't have any space for this. I was wondering if there are any studios in New York City (or Brooklyn) that one can rent (or share) by the hour. I won't be using it enough to rent the space for long periods. I might use it once a week. I might go a month without using it. The perfect place for me would be reasonably priced and stocked with basic equipment, i.e. easles. If there isn't a place like this, someone should start one. Not a bad business model for luring wanabe artists.

French Connection bar IRL

In the first half of The French Connection, Gene Hackman's character wakes up after being face-down on a bar (the barman is starting to mop up, very early in the AM it looks like), picks up his hat and walks out of the bar. The bar is underneath what looks like the Brooklyn Bridge. Is/was this a real place? Can anyone ID the intersection? (This is right before he starts following the pink-wearing bicyclist girl & ends up handcuffed to his bed by her - the next scene has Roy Scheider visiting Hackman in his tenement apartment and unlocking the cuffs.)
