I am a chubby (5'6", sz 14-16), out-of-shape lady living in thin-and-super-fit New York City. I want to lose weight and get back in shape, and I would like to do that by going to exercise classes — zumba, yoga, spinning, pilates, boxing, whatever — but I don't want to go to a class that's going to make me feel like crap about my weight.

I'm in the process of planning a bachelorette party in New York, and am looking for some hotel recommendations. We'd like to stay in the SoHo/Meat Packing district. There will be a total of 10 of us and I'd like to keep the price around $100 per person, but think people would be comfortable spending a little bit more if necessary. From my research, and the prices I've seen, it looks like this is going to be tricky! What are you hotel recommendations?

I can't believe I'm trying to find an apartment in NYC, especially on such short notice, but I guess I am. Is there some kind of apartment-finding service anyone recommends? Am already looking at Airbnb - good? Probably need something cheap, tiny, convenient for a few months (one person working in Times Square), then something for two people and possibly a cat for the remainder of the year.

Moving to New York from Florida to take a job at the beginning of January, and i'm having some trouble finding a good place to live, mostly that I don't really know how to find good places that aren't on craigslist/padmapper. The friend i'm going to live with works in Greenpoint, so we're leaning heavily on that neighborhood, just off the Greenpoint or Nassau stops, so only one of us has to take the subway to work.

Was smoking indoors at the New York Public Library (the main branch) ever permitted? I'm specifically interested in what the rules were during the 1920s. It seems like it would have been a terrible idea to allow it, but given the prevalence of smoking during that period, I'm curious as to if it was actually banned or not. I have been googling, but haven't been able to find anything helpful.

Where can I find good techno this weekend (or any weekend) in New York City? A friend of mine is fond of high-energy techno, akin to "musical caffeine." I'd like to take her to a show she'd enjoy, but I know nothing at all about the genre. Are there any noteworthy events this weekend, or in the near future? Any venues that are reliably good, and where we wouldn't be the only folks in our late twenties? Particular artist names I should keep an eye out for?
