Volunteering with 1-2 Year Olds

My wife and I both used to volunteer one or two days a month. Since our child was born, it is much harder to find the time to volunteer. Are there any good volunteer opportunities that would work well with a 20 month old? We live in Brooklyn, if anyone knows anything specific to our area. [more inside]

Best Place to Purchase Large Modern World Wall Maps?

My wife and I are looking to purchase a very large world map to hand on my wall (most likely a political map showing country boundaries, capital cities, etc.). We also would like to get several smaller maps of countries we've visited over the years. What are your recommendations for the best online map stores (or brick and mortar stores in NYC)? Restaurants in Brooklyn Open on Xmas?

My family is staying with me in Brooklyn this year for Christmas. If we don't murder each other before Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, does anyone have any recommendations for good restaurants that are open on Christmas Day in Brooklyn? For Christmas Eve, we were thinking about cooking at home but also ordering in, so any recommendations for that (I live in North Park Slope, so it would have to be somewhere close by)?

New York: The Biography

I read Peter Ackroyd's London: The Biography awhile back and loved the loose-limbed, ambulatory, anecdote-heavy style of it. Is there a "biography" of New York City that shares some of those characteristics? If not, what is the most fascinating book that covers the full history of New York City (rather than specific time periods or subregions)? [more inside]

Birthday in NY

I have a birthday coming up and I want to get friends together to do something besides a house party or going to the bars. I've done karaoke for my birthday in the past. Any suggestions? I want to keep it small this year, probably around 10 people and ideally it would be something where one could drink or at least go to the bars later in the evening. Also, looking for something on the night of March 28 or 29.

Where can I find hip, designer-ish tee shirts in New York City? I am thinking of places like Odin, if you are familiar with it.
