New York City Wedding Planner

Can you recommend a good wedding planner for a New York City wedding? Can anyone offer recommendations or advice about finding a good wedding planner who works in Manhattan?

I'm looking for someone
(1) to make sure the day-of goes smoothly
(2) to help separate the wheat from the chaff on vendors, locations, and service providers - but with freedom to pick our own vendors independently if we want to
(3) to allow us to plan the religious part of the ceremony completely independently
(4) to reduce our stress by making sure we don't forget anything
(5) to respect the vision that we already have for the wedding and make it happen - we need help with implementation details, not the overall design

We strongly prefer traditional/elegant to trendy. We are willing to spend money to get someone good.

Any thoughts, warnings, suggestions? General advice about picking a planner or other sites where reliable reviews of wedding planners are posted would also be helpful.

Seeking the perfect lakeside cabin in the Adirondacks for my Honeymoon.

Looking to rent a lakeside cabin in the Adirondacks this August for a week-long honeymoon get-away. Overwhelmed by the size of the 'dacks and seeking recommendations for a romantic, yet affordable area with great scenery and access to a variety of outdoor activities. - We are both down-to-earth types so the amenities can be scarce (but still comfortable);
- Privacy is important
- Proximity to a downtown type area with a few dining options would be nice but not entirely necessary
- Definitely interested in hiking, canoeing, kayaking, biking, etc.
- Our budget is capped around $1500 for the week, although if it was the perfect place, we might consider going slightly higher.

Any specific or general suggestions from more experienced travelers would be greatly appreciated!

Where should I get married?

I'd like to find some non-church wedding ceremony & reception sites that aren't very expensive and aren't too far from my area in NY. Bonus points for "unusual" sites. My wedding will be next July, but we have no location yet.

He & I really need some suggestions for ceremony & reception sites because we are new to our area and because we have a limited budget. Here are our requests/desires:

I don't want to get too far away (2 hours away max.) from Westchester County, NY.

No churches.

The site(s) must accommodate a party of less than 50 people.

Indoor is preferred given the humid weather in the summer.

"Unusual" or "quirky" ideas or very welcomed. We've been trying to figure out something that would fit our personalities. We've thought of movie theaters (if anyone knows one that will do this, please let me know) & libraries (too expensive).

Where can I get cool photos of the numbers 1-20 around New York?

NYC Wedding Filter: The future Ms. Smatatoes thinks numbered tables for our wedding would be too boring, but the current Mr. Smatatoes doesn't want cutesy names (ie, "Tribeca", "Red Hook"), either. So our compromise is getting nice photographs of numbers from around the city- ie, a shot of the front of a 1 train for table #1, and so on. Here's the question: what are some good, creative places to get a cool shot of the numbers 1-20 around NYC?

Wedding in NYC. Can I ask a friend to let me stay with him if he's not invited?

Is it inappropriate to ask a friend if I can crash at his place for a wedding if he isn't invited? I used to go to school in New York, and two of my closest friends from the city are getting married. Normally when I go into the city I stay with that friend (no longer an option), or another friend, Bill. However, while Bill is friendly with the people getting married (through me), I would be very surprised if he was invited.

I need to book a place to stay, and the special rate in Brooklyn for the wedding is $400+/night (there's a tabletop convention in town - who knew?). Would it be OK to ask my friend to let my girlfriend and I crash with him for 3 days, or is that bad form? Note that I'll undoubtedly spend at least one night and one day with him of the 3 days I am there, if not more.

Recommendations for places to try on wedding dresses in NYC.

Need recommendations for places to try on wedding dresses this weekend in NYC. One of my friends is coming to NYC this weekend and wants to go shopping. I just got engaged and she thought it would be a fun/girly adventure to go wedding dress shopping. I'm looking for recommendations of places to go try on some dresses and maybe have a little champagne and fun in the NYC area. I just moved here and don't have any idea which places are good/bad and haven't started doing any real wedding research yet either. There are like 40 listings on TheKnot/WeddingChannel so I would prefer to get recommendations from locals/trusted MeFites. I won't be buying, but just trying on to get a feel for what looks good, as mentioned in this thread. There are a few other considerations that may impact this, please lend me your advice.

- We haven't started planning yet. That means I don't know the season, the location (beach, house of worship, etc), or even the budget. Does that render this useless?
- Am I supposed to do this with a certain person/people? She won't be the maid of honor - is this something I'm supposed to do with my mom, my fiance's mom, or my maid of honor etc? Will I offend anyone if we go? She will probably be a bridesmaid if that matters.
- Is there enough time to get an appointment for Saturday/Sunday? How does this work?

I'd love to hear store recommendations even if we don't go this weekend, since I obviously will be going at some point. We're subway-bound and would prefer Manhattan but are willing to go to other boroughs if there's a place worth visiting.

Thanks!

Wedding and reception venues in New York?

Friends are looking for wedding and reception venues in New York State, preferably within an hour or two of NYC. This will be for a May or June wedding.

For the wedding venue:

* A wedding venue that can seat around 200.
* A memorable natural space in which people can walk around afterwards.
* An outdoor wedding with alternative arrangements if there's rain OR a beautiful church.

For the reception venue (which might be the same as the wedding venue):
* Obviously, drivable from wedding venue.
* Curfew into the night (2 or 3 am preferably).
* Close to decent hotels for people to sleep at.
* Strongly preferred: allow you to bring in your own caterer.

For both:
* As inexpensive as possible within the above constraints.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Seeking pretty, Hello Kitty-free hair accessories

Where can I find pretty things for my hair? I'm looking for online shops and stores in DC, New York and Pittsburgh. No tiaras, please. Where can I find hair combs, barrettes, clips and other fun accessories for my hair, both for my upcoming wedding and for everyday wear?
I'm also looking for plain metal combs and clips that I can embellish myself.

Help me hire a great wedding band in the NYC area. I'm getting married next June in Bayville, NY, which is about an hour east of NYC on Long Island. We've been looking around on the web at wedding bands and wedding band agencies; unfortunately we live in Boston and can't make it to any of these bands' 'showcase nights' to see them in person.

So: any MeFites been to a great wedding with a great band lately? Or had a great band at their own wedding? Our main thing is that we want to dance - a lot - at ours. We're not so into melismatic R&B vocals, but otherwise anything goes. Thanks!

NYC-area Wedding Photographers

Help me find a great wedding photographer for my wedding on Long Island next June! We're getting married in June of 2007 in Bayville, NY, a small town on the North Shore of Long Island about an hour from New York. We've looked at a few wedding photographers in the area, but they are all crazily expensive ($6,000+). More problematically, they only give us maybe a hundred prints in the end--out of thousands of photos--and are generally into a super-cheesy, glamour-shot aesthetic. Lots of pictures of the bride staring off into the distance, showing off her garters, making out with the groom on the beach, etc. etc. A lot of them have arcane pre-digital rules (no access to the digital files, for example, until one year after the wedding). None of them are appealing so far.

Ideally, we'd like to pay less for someone to shoot a lot of great, candid photos, and then give them to us in digital form (on a DVD, say). We're computer savvy and could take charge of making our own photo albums and prints. The main thing is that we'd like a good, fun, flexible photographer who can shoot digitally and give us access to the photographs. Any suggestions, endorsements, personal experiences? Thanks!

Making the mix (NJ-NY-TX style)

Help me make a mix CD about New Jersey, New York and Texas... My brother's getting married in two weeks, and we're putting together "welcome boxes" for all of the guests coming in from out of town who'll be staying in hotels. I thought it might be fun to include a mix CD of songs about NJ (where we're from), NY (where he and his fiancee met), and TX (where she's from), and/or definitive songs by artists from those locations. I've got a short list already developing in my head, but I know that the experts of AskMe can come up with a better selection than I could hope to assemble on my own.
New York wedding

Where should I get married in New York City? If everything goes as planned, I'm getting married Fall 2006. I need ideas of where to do this, both for the ceremony and the reception. No churches please. Okay to think "outside of the box", but "bungee jump from a hot air balloon onto the Empire State Building" is over doing it a bit. Any of the 5 boroughs are game.
Central Park and The Frying Pan remain options, but a few more would really help. The budget is fairly tight, but I'm not sure exactly what it is yet. Number of guests is also undetermined, but let's just say from about 150-200.
Winners can't come on our honeymoon, but you'll be in our hearts forever.
Thanks in advance...

What's a good outdoor wedding location outside NYC?

Creative outdoorsy wedding location idea outside NYC? [more inside] We're just starting to plan a wedding. We're considering the idea of doing it somewhere in upstate NY (or, maybe, NJ or Eastern PA). I'd been told there were lots of tiny hotels/BnBs/mansions/etc that you could basically get for a weekend, have the wedding party stay there, and have the ceremony and reception all there too. My searching has turned up a little (e.g.), but nothing too exciting. We'll, it's turned up some amusing relics from the era when the catskills were hopping, but I'm not sure I want an ironic wedding. We'd like somewhere with a bit of nature too (mountains, woods, you know the stuff), and not too over-the-top ostentatious.

We're planning on doing an extended road trip this weekend to visit a few places, but the list is pretty short right now.

Anyone go to any nice weddings in that kind of setting? Are we maybe looking for something that doesn't exist? Vegas?
