I've been tasked with taking 8 members of my family, needing five bedrooms from the UK to New York in June 2009. Any advice on group booking deals and the like, for flights and/or hotels? Am I looking too early for good deals?

New Orleans fell through, so let's try something else that's new!

As luck would have it, my previous question has fizzled out.

Same people travelling, but this time, we're heading to New York City from Waverly, NY, and only staying for the weekend (5/22 or 23-5/25). The biggest question is: how do we get into the city? We do have access to a car, but I'd be the driver and I really dislike driving in big ass cities (such as NYC). How could we get from Waverly to inside the city?

Where can we stay that would be good for general partying-ness and some sight-seeing, but also relatively cheap (the main reason why this trip was cut down to a weekend instead of a week)?

Is there some sort of easy carryaround map I can use? (I like maps that have subway lines/stations and bus service on them.)

What is 'not to be missed'? I've been to NYC once (pre-9/11), and seen the big attractions, but have no desire to see Ground Zero (neither does my friend, for that matter.)

How much is this going to hurt in the wallet? I know that cigarettes are expensive (my friend smokes), but for alcohol, what would be standard prices for stuff like beers and mixed drinks?

Lastly, any words of advice? This is my first vacation that I'm planning by myself and I'm trying to not screw it up. (Of course, leaving one week to plan things isn't helping matters, but was out of my hands.)

One week with a car! What do we do?

If you have been car-less for your entire adult life in New York City and just rented a car for a work-free week, where would you go? I read the few other questions on AskMe regarding day trips out of the city but I'm also open to other fun suggestions to do that you wouldn't be able to do without a car. E.g. go shopping at the outlets, take a trip to Ikea. We can't stay overnight anywhere (pet duties) but would love to explore new places (Atlantic City? Long Beach?). Please help us not waste this vacation week!

Summer Rentals in New England/New York?

We've decided to take a vacation this summer with another family. We've been looking at Lake George and the Acadia area, but it's hard to find something for 10 people. Does anyone have recommendation for a vacation spot that isn't as popular, maybe a "best kept secret" kind of place? We're looking for a place on the water (coastal or inland), with places to hike, maybe a funky little town nearby. We're in Central Mass and willing to travel 6 hours in any direction.

Help for visiting NYC?

Help for visiting NYC? I'm taking my 13 year old daughter to NYC for the weekend. We will arrive in LaGuardia on Friday, 26th October around 9:00 am. From there I would like to go to Manhattan. I can figure out the trains, buses and other ground transport well enough on my own.

First thing I want is a coin locker. My hotel is in Huntington. I'd like to avoid having to go to Huntington from the airport and then heading to Manhattan. So, can anyone tell me where I can definitely find a coin locker in Manhattan? They were indispensable to me when I visited Japan a few years ago. I called the Port authority and was told that due to security concerns, coin lockers at most airports, bus stations and train stations (including subway) have been eliminated. Is this true? Is there anywhere else I can find a coin locker or a place to store a bag until I take the train back to Huntington late at night?

Also, We'll be leaving LaGuardia Sunday afternoon. Can you give me some must visit places that are feasible to cover in two days time? Things that are kid friendly are preferred. So far, the list is: 1. take the kid to a show 2. Sanrio store (she still sorta digs Hello Kitty) 3. Nintendo World 4. Statue of Liberty 5. A friend told me about some dumpling shop in Greenwich village that makes the dumplings in the window (does anyone know the name? Sammy's, maybe?)

Thanks all. I'll pick best answers after I return.

Where to go around NYC to see the meteor shower on August 12?

Where to go around NYC to see the meteor shower on August 12? On Sunday, August 12, the Perseid meteor shower will coincide with a new moon, so the sight should be spectacular. Unfortunately, I live in brightly lit NYC without a car.

So to which dark city should I go on public transportation to see the meteor shower? I'm thinking upstate by Metro North or Long Island by LIRR.

Some preferences :

1. I would like to be able to spend the night indoors (not camping), so there should be some sort of lodging where I end up.
2. I would like to be able to take the train back to the office for work on Monday morning at 9am.

Thank you for your help!

Gotta get out of this place

Help me plan a weekend getaway in upstate New York and save my sanity. We're looking for a weekend getaway in upstate New York, but there are a few requirements. We live in Brooklyn. We don't own a car and don't want to rent a car, so it will have to be someplace accessible by train (Metro North or Amtrak). We'd like someplace with beautiful views in the mountains or on a lake, or even better, both. We don't care about shopping or planned activities. We just want to relax and read and take long walks, if we're feeling really ambitious. Again, we won't have transportation when we're there, so we either need to find a resort with a decent restaurant or someplace within walking distance of restaurants (it would be even better if they were actually GOOD restaurants!) As far as cost, we're looking for something no higher than $150 a night.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Help me get the most out of my holiday!

I'm visting four countries within a month, what should I see, visit, taste, smell and photograph while I'm there? Very soon, I'll be travelling to Eygpt, America, Canada, U.K. for around four weeks. Specifically, Cairo, Washington D.C., New York, Toronto and London.

The latter two I have previously visited so the essential tourist spots have been covered (i.e. Niagra Falls and Big Ben) but as I'm spending about 10 days in each location what other things do you suggest I try?

I'll have about three days at the former locations, however I've never visted any of them previously and I'm wondering how to narrow down what I see and if it's really possible to get an enriching experience from my travels there.

That being said, this is less about packing everything into every single second of every single day and more just a chance to get away from my current situation (that you'd have learnt through my previous AskMe questions).

There's also going to be a LOT of airplane/airport time, so any suggestions on how to stave the boredom away?

Thanks in advance, I'll send you guys a postcard. Hee.

Spending a weekend in New York City with a bright 7-year-old. Will be visiting various areas of the city for shopping and eating pursuits, and have identified stuff that will engage the kid in each area, except Chinatown. Any recs? (M.I.) Some of the places we'll visit in other areas, for comparison: Times Square Kids-R-Us, American Museum of Natural History, Grand Central Station, Staten Island ferry, Dylan's Candy Bar. We have been to Chinatown together before, to eat, but not really to explore.
