Around the Big Apple in 0.33 days (with a baby and 4 retirees)

My relatives are coming to visit the big apple and I would be chaperoning them around on a site-seeing tour. The problem is that they are elderly (are retired), from another culture & country (India), a group of 5 and there is a very young baby ( couple of months old) traveling with them. This makes using subways, or taking long walks or using bicycles a difficult proposition. What would be the best way to give them a good NYC experience? [more inside]

Dating in NYC?

No, seriously, why am I having zero luck? I ended a long-term relationship in June. I'm still getting over it, but I want to get back on that damn horse. I moved to NYC for grad school in August, and I have had zero (literally, 0) luck with men since the breakup. [more inside]

Fire in apartment below--rebuilding/insurance questions

[Asking for a friend] My building had a fire last night, on the floor below mine. I have middling fire damage at baseboard level in both bedrooms, both of which will be uninhabitable until the damage is ripped out and redone. All my windows are broken and glass is everywhere, but aside from the above stuff and the overwhelming odor of smoke and my broken-down front door, there is no other (water or fire or smoke stain) damage to the apartment. This is in NYC, and I have no renter's insurance. [more inside]

Dining out in NYC when you're rocking a corset

I recently bought a corset for a friend of mine. She looks killer drop-dead amazing gorgeous in it. We'd like to go out to dinner somewhere in NYC where such attire would be both appreciated and fit in. (She'll probably pair it with pants—nothing fetish-y. I'll do my level best to look sharp, but I can hardly compete.) All suggestions appreciated. Thanks!

New York, Paris, Rome, oh my!

You get to spend a week in New York, Paris or Rome, during which money isn't much of an object. You're not a millionaire by any means, but for once you're going to have a romantic holiday where you're not cutting costs by backpacking or AirBNBing or packing your own lunch or commuting from the outer rim every morning. NYC Neighborhoods Questions

I've been to NY dozens of times and enjoy exploring neighborhoods like the Village and SoHo where there are lots of shops, coffeeshops, restaurants, etc. I prefer independent shops over the corporate stores you'd find in Midtown. I haven't spent a whole lot of time in NY in the last 10 years so I'm not aware of neighborhoods that may have changed. I'm visiting this weekend please help me decide where to spend my time! Starting over in your 50s

My friend is looking to change careers and hopefully move into the nonprofit world. Is a career change possible at her age? What should she be doing? What types of positions should she be looking for? She's in her 50s and has a legal background. She can practice law and formerly worked in legal publishing, but she hasn't worked in law for decades. She's spent the last decade or so as an analyst at a financial company.

Bringing an out of state car to New York

In a month or so, I will be buying a used car from a relative in a far away state to bring to New York state (not city). What do I need to do to be in compliance with the law, regarding insurance and registration? I already have a NY state license.

NY Bar Application Help

I’m looking for someone -- or some service -- to help me prepare my application to be admitted to the New York State Bar. (I’ve already passed the bar exam itself.) I don’t have blemishes, so-to-speak, that need to be explained, but my pre-law work history is complicated, and I lived in a million different places before law school but during the applicable period -- and I'm very busy right now -- so I'd like someone to help me carefully and precisely put the application together. Buying non-movie posters and prints in NYC

I want to buy four or five interesting posters to fill up my blank walls in my new place and make it feel like 'mine'. I'd prefer to pick them out in person, rather than buying online. I'm especially interested in 20th century art (particularly abstract or semi-abstract), nature or urban photography, vintage maps and prints, and almost anything art deco or art nouveau. I'm also open to serendipitous discoveries that don't fit any of the above. Is there a place in New York that stocks a wide breadth of such things? [more inside]

Weird NYC & DC! RIYL Mütter Museum, Body Worlds, anatomical collections?

My favorite place in the entire world is Philadelphia's exquisite and incomparable Mütter Museum, I've seen Body Worlds more than a dozen times... and you should probably refrain from clicking either of those links if you are squeamish. I will soon be spending a week in NYC followed by a week in Washington, DC. Can you help me make a list of similar museums, exhibits, and collections to visit while I'm there? [more inside]

Will the PATH (NJ->Manhattan) shut down if there's too much snow?

One of my coworkers said that the PATH will shut down if the snow accumulates past the height of the 3rd rail. But the line is underground (except outside where there are wires above head-height handling the charge) - could that actually happen. Has the PATH ever been shut down due to snow accumulation before?

snowflake skirt needed

I would like to find a seamstress or tailor to make a custom pencil skirt for me that I can wear to work (so, stuffy business fabric). My attempts to google a solution have not been successful. I either find places that want to charge me $300 or more (nope!), places that do alterations (I need it made from scratch), or places that make custom clothing for men but not women, or brides but not non-brides. I am located in lower Manhattan but have a subway card and am willing to use it. Can anyone suggest where I can go to have a nice suit-like pencil skirt created for me?

Where to buy — and test — knives in NYC

Seeking suggestions for good stores in NYC to buy high-quality kitchen knives where you can test them out before purchasing. Even if they don't let you actually cut or chop anything, are there places that at least let you hold the knives in your hand, to get a sense of the grip/feel/weight, etc.? Thanks!

How does Power of Attorney Work in New York?

Since I am a lawyer (though of course, not your lawyer, and not his lawyer), a family member asked if I could help him with some issues regarding a durable power of attorney (NY State). Unfortunately, I'm not a trusts & estates lawyer, so I need some direction as to what I should look at and consider in order to let him know whether he should consult a lawyer with that expertise. I know you're not my lawyer, and I'm not seeking your legal advice. [more inside]
