My partner and I are coming down for the weekend in early July: are there any interesting things happening that weekend worth checking out? [more inside]
My son is attending a "theater camp" in NYC in 2 weeks. He's staying with the group, we were planning to do touristy stuff during the week. We had booked an Airbnb a couple weeks ago in West Orange NJ. This morning it cancelled on us. This was an awesome place that had a pool and other amenities that my wife was looking forward to help keep our other children busy during the days that I would also be working in Manhattan. Needless to say we're pretty disappointed. [more inside]
What do you wish you'd known about moving to and living in New York City before taking the plunge? [more inside]
I'm taking a four day trip to NYC over Memorial Day weekend (solo). I have plans on Sunday evening but other than that, my time is completely unaccounted for. And aside from a few non-specific ideas, I'm overwhelmed by choices. [more inside]
Looking for recommendations for places to get waxed in NYC (Manhattan preferred). I have tried Bliss and Uni K; looking for other suggestions. Thanks!
I'm interested in comedy shows in NYC that take place outside the big mainstream venues like Caroline's or Gotham Comedy Club. For lack of a better term, you might call what I'm looking for "underground" comedy shows, but I'm not construing that term narrowly. Just really looking to get away from the more touristy spots that seem to often feature bland acts. Edgier/off-beat stuff welcome. Thanks for your ideas!
I'm planning to go to the Storm King Art Center (in New Windsor, NY) on Friday. I'd like to eat something delicious for lunch while I'm there or before I go. I can bring it from Manhattan (or anyplace in the city, I guess), but I would have to buy it the day before on Thanksgiving. Or, I could eat near the museum or near my hotel in Monroe. [more inside]
In less than three weeks I'll be in New York City. I am ridiculously excited. Of the less than stellar times I have free, when is best to visit the Whitney? [more inside]
I need to find a medical malpractice lawyer in NYC. How do I find the best one? [more inside]
I recently bought a corset for a friend of mine. She looks killer drop-dead amazing gorgeous in it. We'd like to go out to dinner somewhere in NYC where such attire would be both appreciated and fit in. (She'll probably pair it with pants—nothing fetish-y. I'll do my level best to look sharp, but I can hardly compete.) All suggestions appreciated. Thanks!
I own a wood Singer sewing machine table handed down to me by grandmother that is in otherwise decent shape except for the top, which is damaged (as you can see here). Seeking recommendations for someone in New York City who can restore the top. Thank you.
Should I trust this podiatrist even though he's being sued for malpractice? Also, do you have any advice for somebody with Morton’s Neuroma? [more inside]
Looking for recommendations for places to buy corsets, both in NYC and online. I am familiar with Orchard Corset. Thanks for any other ideas!
I got into Columbia for grad school. Yay! But I will be at the Washington Heights campus. I'm moving from SF, and I've never lived on the East Coast. I will be moving with my boyfriend. Please help me figure out where I want to live, how much it'll cost, and also how to actually FIND an apartment in NYC (broker??). [more inside]
I'm thinking about going to law school... but there are special circumstances: public school and evening program. And federal civil service... [more inside]
Can't decide if I should move back to NYC from SF. Please help me find some new ways to think about the problem. [more inside]
What should a couple in their early 30s do in New York City on Thanksgiving Day? [more inside]
I just purchased a bunch of new clothing at Theory, which is definitely a much hipper store than I'm used to shopping at. (My old standby was Banana Republic.) The sales staff was very helpful, and I'm very pleased with what I came home with, but I'd love some help in mixing and matching everything. Photos of (almost) all of the items I bought can be found here. [more inside]
So, my boyfriend of six months and I are heading to NYC tonight and staying 'til Sunday. I have a up against a wall with an approaching work deadline and because of my own poor planning will need to do a little bit of chipping-away-at-it while we're there. I need to carve out three or four 3/4-hour (ish) focused working sessions during our trip, and I wanted to ask the hive mind if anyone familiar with the city could suggest any non-awful ways to handle this. Light flurries inside... [more inside]
A couple of middle-manager-ish employees perhaps bent the rules a little bit for us and allowed us to transfer a lease to new parties, completely getting us out of the lease. Should I/how do I say thank you? [more inside]
Seeking an NYC bar for a gathering of around eight people in their mid-to-late 30s. Requirements: quiet enough to talk; spacious enough that we can all congregate in one spot or will take reservations; in downtown Manhattan (roughly speaking); reasonably accessible by subway a big plus. Difficulty: event planned for a Saturday night, around 8 PM, and I don't expect everyone to show up at the same time (which makes reservations tricky). Thanks!
I'm going to NYC for a few days. My plan was to sit in the park and read and then see plays. I am going with someone who wants to Do Things. Assuming I am free during the days only (and tomorrow night before the late Welcome to Night Vale show), what things that aren't the Big Name Attractions should I go for?
My favorite place in the entire world is Philadelphia's exquisite and incomparable Mütter Museum, I've seen Body Worlds more than a dozen times... and you should probably refrain from clicking either of those links if you are squeamish. I will soon be spending a week in NYC followed by a week in Washington, DC. Can you help me make a list of similar museums, exhibits, and collections to visit while I'm there? [more inside]
After trying Coors Banquet Beer purchased at a grocery store in Colorado, I have a strange and growing craving to drink this supremely yeasty beverage again. However, I'm having trouble locating it (tried Fairway UES and Whole Foods Union Square so far). I checked the Coors website locator, but it gives me locations that sell ALL kinds of Coors, which is not helpful. Have you seen this beer? Help! [more inside]
I am moving in Brooklyn and need a service that will pack my current apartment and unpack in my new apartment. [more inside]
Our apartment in New York is rent stabilized and we love the neighborhood it's in. I was very, very lucky to find this place back back when I was single. But in April we are moving to London temporarily (maybe for two years?) because of a job my wife has taken. The dream scenario is that we could leave our furniture, find someone we trust to sublease to, and have the option to come back in two years. Or if things go terribly in London we could come back earlier. But there's a complicating factor and I don't even know if the rules would allow us to sublease for very long. Details below. Spa with private hot tubs in NYC? Looking for an equivalent to Watercourse Way in Palo Alto, CA, which rents out private rooms to individuals or small groups that feature hot tubs and showers.
I have never been to NYC. I'm on business travel next week to NYC (Manhattan financial district to be precise). I won't have a lot of touristy time, but my evenings are free, Monday - Thursday. With that limited time, and a hotel in the financial district, what sort of things would it be dumb for someone to not checkout? [more inside]
Seeking suggestions for good stores in NYC to buy high-quality kitchen knives where you can test them out before purchasing. Even if they don't let you actually cut or chop anything, are there places that at least let you hold the knives in your hand, to get a sense of the grip/feel/weight, etc.? Thanks!
Looking for suggestions for places which sell reasonably-priced antique jewelry (or contemporary jewelry with a classic sensibility) in NYC. Stores with helpful, novice-friendly staff a big plus. Thanks.
Looking for an awesome, exfoliating scrub massage in NYC. Salt, sugar, whatever the medium—I'm interested in trying anything. Thanks for any suggestions!
How does one do food shopping and eat healthily on a very constrained budget in Manhattan? I'm looking for resources: specific stores that have 'dented' food items, websites for good local deals, etc. [more inside]
My friend's parents are going to be in town from June 14-17, and they want to see some Blues. Anyplace with Jazz is apparently a no-go; has be be Blues exclusively. [more inside]
I'm planning to move from one NYC neighborhood to another at the end of the summer. Though I'm 99% sure I'll be able to cover all potential expenses (movers, security deposit, first/last month's rent, broker's fee), I was wondering if there's a reputable company that advances small loans to help cover these costs. [more inside]
In a few weeks I'll be flying into NYC around 9:00 AM and flying out around 9:00 PM, and I'd like to take a shower somewhere and maybe even leave my bag for the day so I can wander the city. So far the only options I've found are to pay about $50 for access to an airline lounge, which seems too pricey for what I want, or to book a hotel room. Surely there are cheaper options? I'm not too picky about location, but somewhere in Lower Manhattan would probably be best. Please help me out, New Yorkers!
I'm moving to New York and don't know a lot about neighborhoods. Where should I live? [more inside]
I live in New York City and am visiting Montreal and I'm looking for Chinese translated manga / manhua. Tian Hua in Montreal used to have some, but maybe they got rid of them when they moved? Is there another place that stocks them in either city? Bonus points if you know any good sources for Chinese children's books in either city.
Where to go for dinner next in NYC? I'm a lifelong New Yorker and love going out to eat. However, I feel like I'm in bit of a rut, mostly returning to neighborhood reliables and a handful of other favorite restaurants around the city. The wealth of information about NYC restaurants out there is pretty daunting, so I'm hoping for some direction from the hivemind. Some more details inside. [more inside]
The other night there was a fire in my friend's building in New York City; the fire was on the 10th floor, he lives on the 21st. He wasn't present while the fire happened, but there was smoke damage to his apartment, particularly to his clothes. My friend doesn't have renter's insurance. [more inside]
I could use some input on how I can pull off the bachelorette party I have envisioned, in New York City, in late May of this year. Keywords: fun (not raunchy), slumber party, karaoke, good food, overnight. [more inside]
What weather and road issues should I be aware of in my drive from Birmingham to Boston next Saturday, and what sights should I see? [more inside]
What is the copyright status of works created by the New York City government? Specifically works created by the Department of Health or similar agencies, concerning vital statistics and similar public data? (That is, indices to vital records but not actual vital records, which are protected by privacy restrictions.) Does it make a difference if the records and books were published more than 50 years ago? 40 years ago?
I am in New York City until Friday evening. What are some good ways to pass the time (indoors, please!) [more inside]
Another NYC/Brooklyn restaurant question: City views edition. [more inside]
I want to donate more in support of Hurricane Sandy, but I'm concerned that while the Red Cross and the NYC Mayor's Fund are probably getting a ton of love, there are other charities in the city that are in dire straights as a result of the hurricane. (Or just in general.) What smaller, local NYC charities need our support the most?
Need to buy some subway tile in NYC... quickly. [more inside]
Where to get a very high quality but casual meal alone this Sunday evening in NYC? [more inside]
What are the best student discounts in New York City for non-traditional students? [more inside]
A friend and I are heading into NYC next weekend. We are coming from Montreal and driving across the border. However, after that, we haven't decided the best way to get into the city. Should we drive to Albany and take a bus from there? (Is there long term parking in Albany?) Should we drive into a suburb and take a train in? Should we drive into the city and find a lot? (I'd probably prefer to do one of the first two unless there is some reason to do the third.) [more inside]
It's a bit of a wide net I'm casting here, but where's the biggest and/or nicest apartment I can rent for under $500 in fairly cool cities in the Eastern half of the USA? Say, anywhere east of (and including) Minnesota to Louisiana. I love NOLA, and I've liked everyone I've ever met from Minnesota... [more inside]
