Summer program for 15 yr old NYC?

Can you recommend a summer program, August - Sept, for a bright 15 year old girl living in Queens, NYC? My niece is very smart, loves dance and theater and wants to excel academically. She's starting to make choices that aren't ideal, and (unrelated) do somewhat poorly in Math. I would love to find a program in Queens, or NYC for the month of August that can help her with school, inspire her and encourage her in the right direction. Help?!

won't SOMEBODY think of the basketball team?

"Ladies and Gentlemen, I am not selling money for no basketball team. I am just trying to stay off the streets and raise a little cash..." Who is behind this scam? Like many "New Yorkers", I've heard this script hundreds of times on the Subway. My wife thinks that one kid started it and that others copied him -- and now it's spreading like a virus.

But I say if that was true, the script would evolve and change. It doesn't. It's always the same. Someone is behind ithis. Someone is coaching these kids. I've searched, but I've only found this one blog entry, in which the poster claims to have met the guy behind the scam -- if it is a scam. Does anyone have any more info?

Bonus question: what's the deal with the big, inner-city type guys who walk from car-to-car? Are they just looking for a seat? I doubt it, because even when there seats available, they don't take them. Is something going down? Do they deal drugs on the Subway or something?

Is there a site or resource somewhere that covers Subway scams?

We are going to NYC for a long weekend beginning next Thursday (April 21) and bringing our almost-four-year-old daughter along. I have a specific question and a couple of general ones for those of you who live in/know/have visited NYC with kids. Specific question: We were thinking about taking our child to the Bronx Zoo. We will be staying on the Upper East Side of Manhattan without a vehicle. Apparently there is an express bus -- is it easily doable with a little kid ? (e.g. not a long ride, relatively safe, etc.)

General question (kid-related): We are generally familiar with Manhattan and have some ideas of where we would like to go with our daughter (the Toys R Us in Times Square, Central Park, American Museum of Natural History, etc.). Do you know of any secret gems that would be worth checking out?

General question (not kid-related): We'd also like to squeeze in a few stops that aren't strictly for families. I am particularly interested in "foodie" things -- gourmet shops, must-try take-away places, etc. We've been to Zabar's a couple of times, so where are some other must-visit spots for foodies?

Spending a weekend in New York City with a bright 7-year-old. Will be visiting various areas of the city for shopping and eating pursuits, and have identified stuff that will engage the kid in each area, except Chinatown. Any recs? (M.I.) Some of the places we'll visit in other areas, for comparison: Times Square Kids-R-Us, American Museum of Natural History, Grand Central Station, Staten Island ferry, Dylan's Candy Bar. We have been to Chinatown together before, to eat, but not really to explore.

MeFi Playgroup in NYC?

I am a little uncertain if this question fits the new mold of AskMeFi, but if it works, I'll toss $100 into the site hat in gratitude.... We are expecting our first child in June, and live in NYC. We want to start or join a Manhattan playgroup, but think a mefi-community playgroup would be about the coolest thing ever. So, my question to AskMeFI is: Are there any MeFi-ites in NYC with a baby due in '04 who'd like to start a playgroup with us?
