misfish and I will be in New York for the next week. It's our first time. We have a very loose itinerary. Help us fill our time with the awesomest parts of NYC! [more inside]
I find myself in the Theater District in NYC for the evening with two coworkers. Where should we eat? [more inside]
I just purchased a bunch of new clothing at Theory, which is definitely a much hipper store than I'm used to shopping at. (My old standby was Banana Republic.) The sales staff was very helpful, and I'm very pleased with what I came home with, but I'd love some help in mixing and matching everything. Photos of (almost) all of the items I bought can be found here. [more inside]
Help me understand the world of commuters to NYC living in New Jersey. Which towns would be best for me 'N' my fam? How do people do it? [more inside]
I want to buy four or five interesting posters to fill up my blank walls in my new place and make it feel like 'mine'. I'd prefer to pick them out in person, rather than buying online. I'm especially interested in 20th century art (particularly abstract or semi-abstract), nature or urban photography, vintage maps and prints, and almost anything art deco or art nouveau. I'm also open to serendipitous discoveries that don't fit any of the above. Is there a place in New York that stocks a wide breadth of such things? [more inside]
Is CIS a reliable major for future careers in NY? [more inside]
So, my boyfriend of six months and I are heading to NYC tonight and staying 'til Sunday. I have a up against a wall with an approaching work deadline and because of my own poor planning will need to do a little bit of chipping-away-at-it while we're there. I need to carve out three or four 3/4-hour (ish) focused working sessions during our trip, and I wanted to ask the hive mind if anyone familiar with the city could suggest any non-awful ways to handle this. Light flurries inside... [more inside]
I'd like to compile a list of businesses in New York City—starting with Manhattan—that have been around for 100 years or more. I'd also like to include places the public can visit that aren't "businesses" per se. I'm guessing this information is publicly available, but I don't know where to start. Any guidance would be extremely helpful. Thanks!
A couple of middle-manager-ish employees perhaps bent the rules a little bit for us and allowed us to transfer a lease to new parties, completely getting us out of the lease. Should I/how do I say thank you? [more inside]
There are old questions about this topic but I am looking for updated information and suggestions about strip clubs in Manhattan or Brooklyn. [more inside]
We're thinking seriously about buying a place in Manhattan (and possibly Brooklyn). We have a fairly unique split search (one strand of which is focused on looking for a place that will lower our costs, and the other strand of which is focused on finding a place that might increase our costs a little bit). We need recommendations for honest, intelligent, and very capable real estate agents to help. [more inside]
Trying to work out some travel logistics. If I am on an international flight that gets in to JFK at 7:20pm on a Tuesday, what is the likelihood that I could make it to Penn Station to catch a 9:20pm train? [more inside]
Ahoy! I've taken (and enjoyed) Manhattan Sailing Club's basic intro to sailing course and been on the water several times in other places. I'm now looking for a way to continue to sail and learn in New York on the weekends. Is there anywhere you can take a non-beginner class with an instructor without emptying your bank account? Seeking an NYC bar for a gathering of around eight people in their mid-to-late 30s. Requirements: quiet enough to talk; spacious enough that we can all congregate in one spot or will take reservations; in downtown Manhattan (roughly speaking); reasonably accessible by subway a big plus. Difficulty: event planned for a Saturday night, around 8 PM, and I don't expect everyone to show up at the same time (which makes reservations tricky). Thanks!
I'm going to NYC for a few days. My plan was to sit in the park and read and then see plays. I am going with someone who wants to Do Things. Assuming I am free during the days only (and tomorrow night before the late Welcome to Night Vale show), what things that aren't the Big Name Attractions should I go for?
NYC MortgageFilter. We want an affordable 30 yr fixed 80% LTV co-op loan that underwrites quickly - but! With either ethical considerations or portfolio from a local lender. Need reccs. for lenders and especially loan officers please; or really savvy NYC mortgage brokers. [more inside]
Which clothing stores in NYC have good casual/business casual clothes for larger men? My boyfriend and I are going clothes shopping this coming Saturday to prepare for an upcoming trip. He has a suit, but other than that, all his clothes are jeans and tees. For this trip, we are looking for: casual button down shirts (oxfords or plaids), non-jeans/non-khaki trousers, a sport coat or blazer, and some shoes that fall in between the New Balance sneakers he usually wears and the nice black shoes he wears with his suit. Sizes and price range below the cut. [more inside]
I would like to move to NYC but have no idea how to actually go about doing so. My main priority is meeting people and making new friends, but I'm also (of course) concerned about finding work and living in an area I like and can afford. [more inside]
My favorite place in the entire world is Philadelphia's exquisite and incomparable Mütter Museum, I've seen Body Worlds more than a dozen times... and you should probably refrain from clicking either of those links if you are squeamish. I will soon be spending a week in NYC followed by a week in Washington, DC. Can you help me make a list of similar museums, exhibits, and collections to visit while I'm there? [more inside]
How has getting work through NYC temp agencies changed since the 1990s? [more inside]
I'm a single, college-educated, mid-twenties male who will very likely be relocating from the West Coast to the Tri-State area in a few months for a full-time desk job in Rutherford, New Jersey. I'd love to know your recommendations for affordable rooms, apartments, studios, etc. in safe and convenient neighborhoods. [N.B. I grew up in and lived in South Brooklyn for many years, so I'm familiar with the NYC area, but I've never lived in NJ nor ever considered living there in the past.] [more inside]
After trying Coors Banquet Beer purchased at a grocery store in Colorado, I have a strange and growing craving to drink this supremely yeasty beverage again. However, I'm having trouble locating it (tried Fairway UES and Whole Foods Union Square so far). I checked the Coors website locator, but it gives me locations that sell ALL kinds of Coors, which is not helpful. Have you seen this beer? Help! [more inside]
A friend and I would like to have a place we can meet privately in Manhattan on a regular (monthly?) basis with enough room for the two of us, a laptop, and a microphone with the intention of recording our conversation. [more inside]
A relative is recuperating from surgery in midtown Manhattan. I would like to get an awesome cherry pie and have it delivered to him in the next couple of days. [more inside]
I wanna go to some dance performances! Help me figure out what to see. [more inside]
An activist performance artist is currently facing a year in jail for a 15 minute protest in a New York bank; the Manhattan District Attorney’s is charging him and his choir director with “riot in the second degree, menacing in the third degree, unlawful assembly, and two counts of disorderly conduct”. The case is well publicized and has first amendment issues; I’m curious about its economic implications. How much money will New York City spend bringing this case to trial? What if the trial goes past the one hearing? How much does it cost to jail someone for a year? Courtroom use; judge and prosecutor time; trials for other crimes having to start later, appeals: added up, what do these parts of a misdemeanor prosecution cost NYC in cash money?
Spa with private hot tubs in NYC? Looking for an equivalent to Watercourse Way in Palo Alto, CA, which rents out private rooms to individuals or small groups that feature hot tubs and showers.
Help me be an non-touristy tourist in New York City this week. [more inside]
We're trying to get from Boston to NYC with as little expense and aggravation as possible. What's the best way to do that? [more inside]
I would like to find a seamstress or tailor to make a custom pencil skirt for me that I can wear to work (so, stuffy business fabric). My attempts to google a solution have not been successful. I either find places that want to charge me $300 or more (nope!), places that do alterations (I need it made from scratch), or places that make custom clothing for men but not women, or brides but not non-brides. I am located in lower Manhattan but have a subway card and am willing to use it. Can anyone suggest where I can go to have a nice suit-like pencil skirt created for me?
I've only been going to art museums, but lately, I've been wanting to explore and go to art galleries. Problem is, it's a bit of uncharted territory, and so I have no idea where to start. [more inside]
Help me and my kids plan a fun, low-hassle weekend in New York watching Missus_A run the marathon! [more inside]
I have never been to NYC. I'm on business travel next week to NYC (Manhattan financial district to be precise). I won't have a lot of touristy time, but my evenings are free, Monday - Thursday. With that limited time, and a hotel in the financial district, what sort of things would it be dumb for someone to not checkout? [more inside]
We will be travelling to the US from Europe next year, and I'm interested in the Macy's parade. Is it worth timing our trip so we can see it - particularly as hotels seem to be cheaper in November - or is it a bad idea to visit the US during Thanksgiving (and maybe the chaos of Black Friday)? Possibly relevant: neither of us have driving licenses so would be reliant on public transport, and would plan on spending a few days in NYC before travelling on or flying home.
Financial advisor-filter : Can anyone recommend a fee-based financial planner in NYC? Or are there sites/review sites that don't have shills on them? For DINK couple looking to save for apartment purchase and make general financial plans for the future. [more inside]
Seeking suggestions for good stores in NYC to buy high-quality kitchen knives where you can test them out before purchasing. Even if they don't let you actually cut or chop anything, are there places that at least let you hold the knives in your hand, to get a sense of the grip/feel/weight, etc.? Thanks!
I'm looking for an Oct. 1st roommate share in Brooklyn, and so far I'm coming across shockingly few places listed on Craigslist. Is there another list I'm not aware of? I already put word out to my network. Details: -- I've lived in BK for six years (Crown Heights + Park Slope), and have never had trouble finding a place before. --Budget is $1100 and under. --Looking to stay for 6 months or longer --I'm searching under "rooms & shares" AND "sublets & temporary" Thanks!!
Looking for suggestions for places which sell reasonably-priced antique jewelry (or contemporary jewelry with a classic sensibility) in NYC. Stores with helpful, novice-friendly staff a big plus. Thanks.
Where can I bring about 20 friends who were planning to meet me tonight in central park for a birthday gathering? Storm clouds are brewing and I need a good backup, like a bar. Help me save the day!!
I'm going to be in NYC Fri-Sun and have arranged to have dinner tomorrow evening with an old friend before heading up to the Bronx (Fieldston, near the Horace Mann School) where I'll be spending the night (so I need to be in a useful place to catch the 1 train or an express bus). I had been thinking of Luigi's, which was my standby thirty years ago (great cheap Italian food!) and which I was delighted to see was still in business, but they don't serve booze. Any suggestions for a good place in the Columbus Circle area? Must be reasonably cheap: my friend is broke and I'm not exactly flush. [more inside]
I want to take my friend on a tour of a recording studio in the NYC area to take a friend on for his birthday. Google has come up surprisingly short. I'd prefer a recording studio that has come kind of historical importance, though I know that most of the legendary studios in NYC have moved or closed. If a historically significant studio isn't a possibility, I was hoping to find one that has recorded interesting artists in the alt/indie rock, power pop, or soul genres. [more inside]
Looking for an awesome, exfoliating scrub massage in NYC. Salt, sugar, whatever the medium—I'm interested in trying anything. Thanks for any suggestions!
I am planning an anniversary trip to NYC for the third weekend in October - we would like someplace fun and reasonable to stay (an actual hotel, so AirBnB is out). We plan on doing some touristy things (a Broadway show, some of the big museums), but we would like to spend the rest of the time in a part of the city that's entertaining and quirky and a bit off the beaten path. Any recommendations of where to stay, and things to do once we're there, would be welcome. [more inside]
How does one do food shopping and eat healthily on a very constrained budget in Manhattan? I'm looking for resources: specific stores that have 'dented' food items, websites for good local deals, etc. [more inside]
I have a Readynas which will not boot. I have gone through support and am ready to give up. Assuming the problem is fixable, is there anyone in New York who you would trust with recovering your music / photo collection?
I'm meeting with a friend tomorrow afternoon for a few beers and something to eat, and I'm drawing a complete blank! [more inside]
My friend's parents are going to be in town from June 14-17, and they want to see some Blues. Anyplace with Jazz is apparently a no-go; has be be Blues exclusively. [more inside]
I just moved to NYC for the summer, am living in Washington Heights. It's a pretty dense commercial area with a ton of shops. Among these shops are a number of places that call themselves "Presbyterian Deli." What is this? [more inside]
I'd like to read about New York City. I'm looking for more general "New York 101" overviews, or books about longer eras/themes. I'm not looking for books about cultural "scenes" or specific events/short periods. I have my eye on "Gotham" by Burrows and Wallace, which seems like the standard one volume history, and also "The Power Broker" by Caro (which, to give you an idea, is about as focussed and specific a book about New York as I'm looking for right now). What else can you recommend?
