Investigating a New York City (Brooklyn) real estate fantasy: I sometimes dream of finding an odd space -- a small garage, a storefront, a storage building -- and fixing it up into livable space. I see examples around town of people who have done this. I've heard friend-of-friend stories. But I have no idea how one finds non-apartment real estate sale listings in Brooklyn (or non-new-obnoxious-condo listings, for that matter). Putting aside zoning issues and the like -- where could I start investigating? Craigslist/Streeteasy/Trulia don't seem to help.

YoutubeFilter: help me find a video online. I want to find a clip-from any movie out there-of the standard, cliche "new guy in New York seeing the sites with a huge grin" montage. The sort of thing that is in films from the 80s like Crocodile Dundee, where you see a tourist/hillbilly seeing the city for the first time, set to some poppy, uptempo soundtrack music. HELP!

In a few weekends, I'll be in New York City, a place I only skimmed the surface of when I was younger. I'll have Saturday at noon until mid-afternoon Sunday completely free. Since I don't have much money, I don't need much sleep, and my time is short, I wouldn't mind skipping that $20 hostel bed, pulling an all-nighter, and seeing more of the city. There's been plenty of previous questions about how to do NYC on the cheap, but any suggestions on how to continue to do NYC on the cheap in the dead of night? [more inside]

I might be relocating to Washington DC. I've visited a few times as a tourist but I know nothing about what life is like there. I've found a few discussions in the archive about moving to DC, but they seem to be written for someone who is trying to figure out where to move to. But I'm not at that point yet. I'm mainly trying to get a sense of what DC life is like for someone whose career is not in politics. Really what I want is a description of life in DC that uses NYC as a frame of reference, comparing neighborhoods, transportation, dining, night life, etc. [more inside]

My family is staying with me in Brooklyn this year for Christmas. If we don't murder each other before Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, does anyone have any recommendations for good restaurants that are open on Christmas Day in Brooklyn? For Christmas Eve, we were thinking about cooking at home but also ordering in, so any recommendations for that (I live in North Park Slope, so it would have to be somewhere close by)?

On Tuesday I'll be showing a new arrival to New York City around for an hour or so in the late afternoon. He's interested in the city's history, particularly the Bowery/Lower East Side. He has seen all the major tourist stops and I'm completely ignorant of the latest cool/interesting/weird spots downtown and most places have the lifespan of mayflies. Any ideas on how to prepare an awesome, emergency walking tour? [more inside]
