Suggestions for Trick or Treat Trip from Philly to Boston

I have two kids (5 & 8) who are very excited about Halloween, but we are going to need to spend the evening of the 31st driving fro Philadelphia to Boston. I would like to stop at a couple of places on the way for them to do some Trick-or-Treating (yes, they will be in costume in the car - sorceress and cobra). So, I would love suggestions for some neighborhoods/streets that would be good places to trick or treat. Ideally in CT off of the Hutchinson River Parkway, Merritt Parkway, or I-84; or else off of the MassPike. [more inside]

We will be staying on Upper West Side at 73rd near Broadway from October 9-17. Could you please suggest places to go and things to do? 1. Favorite breakfast places nearby? 2. Favorite things to do in NYC, low to moderate cost? 3. Favorite restaurants for lunch or dinner, both moderately priced and splurgy? 4. Any special events or festivals going on at that time? 5. Any guesses about the weather and how many warm clothes to pack? 6. Inspirations that I haven't thought of? Thanks Hivemind. [more inside]

Help me mix & match my new clothes!

I just purchased a bunch of new clothing at Theory, which is definitely a much hipper store than I'm used to shopping at. (My old standby was Banana Republic.) The sales staff was very helpful, and I'm very pleased with what I came home with, but I'd love some help in mixing and matching everything. Photos of (almost) all of the items I bought can be found here. [more inside]

How to find / start a group exploring problems of 21st C. city life?

I'm a lifelong city dweller (New York is my town), and looking to connect with others who are having trouble coping with / adjusting to dramatic changes in city life that have taken hold over the past 15 years or so. The hope is to find or start a group: to find creative solutions, ways of coping, preserving sanity, and considering appropriate legal action when warranted. But I'm not sure where to start! Where is the literary and cultural capital of the world...right now?

I'm watching a documentary on Netflix called "New York in the 50's" about poets, journalists, and free thinkers in the Village during the Eisenhower administration. The interviewees keep referencing a self-conscious attempt to emulate life in Paris in the 1920s. So two questions come to mind: 1) Where is this occurring today? Does it only appear in hindsight? Accordingly, 2) Where else have such flowerings occurred? Paris in 1848? Prague in 1968? Has the internet made this kind of location-based creativity irrelevant?

Buying non-movie posters and prints in NYC

I want to buy four or five interesting posters to fill up my blank walls in my new place and make it feel like 'mine'. I'd prefer to pick them out in person, rather than buying online. I'm especially interested in 20th century art (particularly abstract or semi-abstract), nature or urban photography, vintage maps and prints, and almost anything art deco or art nouveau. I'm also open to serendipitous discoveries that don't fit any of the above. Is there a place in New York that stocks a wide breadth of such things? [more inside]

NYC bar for a Saturday night gathering

Seeking an NYC bar for a gathering of around eight people in their mid-to-late 30s. Requirements: quiet enough to talk; spacious enough that we can all congregate in one spot or will take reservations; in downtown Manhattan (roughly speaking); reasonably accessible by subway a big plus. Difficulty: event planned for a Saturday night, around 8 PM, and I don't expect everyone to show up at the same time (which makes reservations tricky). Thanks!

It's time to do this once and for all

So, for a variety of reasons, I was never very good about my dental care regimen. This has come to mean that, at 24, I have one cracked tooth, two chipped ones covered with veneers, two that have been pulled, a mouth full of cavities, gum disease and on-and-off pain in different teeth. I'm so tired of this. I know it's horrible to think this way, but the more time that passes, the less I feel like even brushing my teeth ( I only do it when I have to go out at this point). The guilt and anxiety are wrecking me psychologically as is the constant threat of intractable pain. I've tried to get things done the usual way- one appointment/procedure at a time, when I could afford it and had the emotional fortitude to go through with them. The problem is that my last two or three appointments- for root canals and fillings- have gone terribly. The anaesthetic never, ever worked, even after multiple injections, and even with nitrous. My last visit for a root canal was the first time I ever had the distinct displeasure of knowing what a drill on one's nerve feels like. I now shudder at the mere sound of a drill or anything that sounds like it. [more inside]

Settle a trivial question, New York New York, or New York New York?

There may be no way to resolve this question (and it's not one of the great mysteries, I'll admit), but I'll take a majority consensus if that can be achieved. In the song, "New York, New York", is Sinatra effectively singing, "New York (City), "New York (State)", or is he singing, "New York (City), New York (City)"? My belief is that if the song were about, for example, Chicago, Sinatra would sing, "...I want to be a part of it, Chicago, Illinois", however I've encountered more than once the opinion that it would be equivalent to "...I want to be a part of it, Chicago, Chicago".
