My direct manager is having an open house / work-related party tonight (the 30th) and he has invited me and most of the department. We are planning on bringing a small 'host' gift, i.e. flowers or chocolates. Since it is so close to Christmas my wife thinks that we should also bring a small gift for each of my manager's two children (~6 and ~2 years old). I'm unsure whether this would be seen as 'sucking up' or if this is a good idea. [more inside]
I want to do something to mark/celebrate the new year. Partying/going out to a bar or other loud event isn't appealing to me this year, and most of my friends are either away or going to an event that isn't a good fit for me. I'm open to places to go on my own and/or things to do at home either on New Year's Eve or during the day on Jan 1st. [more inside]
What should I do and see (and eat!!) in Vienna? I'm here through next Monday 5 January, and would especially appreciate seasonal suggestions. (There are some great previous asks which have some great suggestions, but not much that focuses on the holiday season.) Vielen Dank!
So I'm doing my Working Holiday in Australia and I purposely started in Sydney so I could experience the big New Year's celebration here. I did NYC's ball drop in Times Square 3 years ago, and New Year's Eve is the biggest holiday of them all for me. I need the 101 on what NYE in Sydney is like, and what I should do. [more inside]
My husband has been incredibly wonderful and patient as I trained for two marathons this past fall, and a 48.6 mile challenge that I will embark on next week. I would like to treat him to a great meal in Manhattan on Wednesday night. [more inside]
Around New Years I enjoy rituals or activities like filling out little surveys in my journal that help me reflect on my past year and make a record I can revisit in the future. Do you have (or know of) any year-end rituals that you find satisfying and/or specific questions or surveys you use for self-reflection? [more inside]
My family and I will soon be embarking on a trip to Spain. We'll be in Seville the 19th-27th, Cordoba for a couple of days after that, and Granada until January 2nd. What's cool stuff to do in these places (we've already got Alhambra tickets), or very nearby? Is there anything associated with the current winter festivities to do? Any good restaurant recommendations?
I've been thinking recently that it might be fun to spend 4-7 days in a warm part of North America to ring in the New Year with my girlfriend. I'd love to find a place to get away, warm up from the Chicago winter and maybe sit on a beach if I can. [more inside]
Mr. Slothhog and I will be in NYC for New Years Eve. We are going with 3 other lovely friends. The actual holiday is one of our group's actual 40th birthday. Interest has been expressed in attending a party... Please give us input about things that will make this visit amazing, especially the ringing in of the new year!
I will be in Paris for a week and some change between Christmas and New Years. I've been before so I know all the standard tourist spots- but I know the holiday season will mess up openings and closings so I'm interested in fun, interesting things and places ...that will be open. Ideally looking for performances, music, English-language theater, etc. I'll be traveling with a classical musician with a fondness for opera, so looking for things along those lines. Any seasonally specific events or things I shouldn't miss?
Is traffic going to be crazy driving this evening/early night (Dec. 31st) from Philly to Brooklyn via Staten Island?
Any suggestions for events or activities in Berlin between 30 December and 2 January, especially New Years Eve? I'm ideally looking for the burner, hippie, artist, rave, etc. vibe that'll appreciate laser pants, but the burner groups haven't posted anything yet.
Help me spread hope around me as part of my new year resolution [more inside]

I’m currently based in Andalucía, Spain, teaching English for the school year, and am planning to visit neighboring France during Christmas vacation. France fascinates me and will be the first country I visit outside of Spain during my time in Europe, but to be honest: I know nothing. I have approximately 13 days to spend in the country, I would like to see Paris and a few other sites in the northwest, and I will probably enter the country on the Mediterranean coast (from Spain) and leave via the Basque Country (to return to Spain). What should I see? [more inside]
Looking for suggestions on a place somewhere between NYC and Boston to stay over New Years weekend. [more inside]
You had an unforgettable experience watching the ball drop in NYC this past NYE. The thought of staying at home this New Year's makes you feel sad and depressed. Where in America do you ring in 2013? [more inside]
I can't help but think ahead for New Year's. Last year, I stood for 20 hours in Times Square and was on the TV broadcast. It doesn't get any better than that. I want to do something again. Where should I go? [more inside]

ResolutionFilter: I really want to start slowly adopting new, healthier habits. As it usually does, the inspiration has hit me just before New Years. But I don't want to make a resolution, I want to establish habits that I can keep. I've tried before, but here's where I always fall down: how do I make the new habits stick? They never actually make it to the "habit" stage for me. [more inside]

There's a New Years gig in Manchester I'm looking at attending, and I thought I'd make a trip of it by visiting my sister in Bristol (amongst other things). However, flights from Australia to England are ridiculously expensive. Is there a way I could fly to another European country and take a cheap flight (or some other form of transport) over?
