What is News? I'm looking for any books, blogs, essays, articles, etc. that relate to any intelligent definitions of news or how people believe the news in 50 years will work. I'm not interested in evaluations of bias, the demise of mainstream media, or inane ramblings about Web 2.0.

Certain news stories are predictable in advance-- because they cover stories that happen every year (like the Oscars or the Super Bowl); or because they cover events you can see coming a long time away (like the 500th birthday of some historical personage.)
Is there any comprehensive list of Things That Will Probably Be In The News Next Year? I'm looking for something like
this weekly preview from CNN, but over a longer timescale.

Cost aside, should I swap an iPod Touch + NYTimes app with a Kindle + NYTimes subscription? My iPod Touch is too distracting; a Kindle would be less so. On the other hand, I love the free NYT app.

I'd like some way to find aggregated local news rather than having to go to each local newspaper site individually. I am generally pretty happy with Google news at the big story level but it fails at the Birmingham, UK level where pretty much the only news it ever picks up is the national paper's coverage of the football teams.

Last night on BBC's news site I saw a scrolling headline like this: "UN's Ban Ki-moon calls for lift of Gaza Blockade". Clicking on it took one to the story about the flotilla in which Netanyahu says "We had no choice" or some such. Today the headline is gone from the Beeb.

If I am a stockbroker whose clients have invested in Coca-Cola (for whatever reason), am I now guilty of a conflict of interest if I recommend to one or more clients (for whatever reason) to short it? if I sell Coke short in my own account? Don't the personal views and personal goals of the clients enter into this equation?

I am trying to remember the address of a website I used to use daily. It's a one-page site, updated early each morning with a selection of links to Australian and international news stories. It's not just an aggregator; the links are carefully chosen by a woman who I believe used to be a newspaper reporter. It's called something like 'morning news' or 'breakfast brief'. Maddeningly, it seems to be un-Googlable. Any ideas? Or, failing that, any suggestions for similar sites?

- Political, cultural, etc blogs
- Blogs from servicemen/civilians working in Iraq
- News analysis
- Iraqi blogs (they can be English or Arabic - I read both!)

Be creative! What do YOU read to find out about Iraq? I'd love to hear about it. Thanks for your input in advance!

[JournalismFilter]: On the surface, televised news in the USA has evolved to a point where the average person is subjected to an endless point-counterpoint debate neglecting the timeless "just the facts" ageless news reporter oath. Is there scientific proof this has occurred and is there really a MSM? Bonus is finding websites that really do just report the facts surrounding news stories.
