gossip-averse liberal political news sources: all killer, no filler?

Hoping to find at least one ostensibly liberal news website that has not yet collapsed into a pit of Buzzfeed-ification or gossip column nonsense masquerading as current events. I don't want to read about the latest offensive off-the-cuff remark made by some random state representative or Joe the Plumber or Sarah Palin or any other totally irrelevant GOP-friendly media personality. I only want to read in-depth stories about U.S. politics with a liberal bent: candidates, issue positions, polls, all that fun stuff. Can you help? [more inside]

Yahoo News seems to have re-designed their site in a way that's removed the ability to enlarge the text of its news articles on an iPad... Is there a way to get around this? The person behind this question is nearly blind and doesn't want to re-learn a non-Yahoo news web portal....

Trying to remember a daily curated news aggregator site

I am trying to remember the address of a website I used to use daily. It's a one-page site, updated early each morning with a selection of links to Australian and international news stories. It's not just an aggregator; the links are carefully chosen by a woman who I believe used to be a newspaper reporter. It's called something like 'morning news' or 'breakfast brief'. Maddeningly, it seems to be un-Googlable. Any ideas? Or, failing that, any suggestions for similar sites?
