I am considering taking a trip to NOLA in December... however, in looking at hostel listings, I realized that I do not know what is a good location to book a hostel. This is because I am not familiar with the city and I am not certain where the interesting parts are located. I also do not know much about the transit options available for accessing different places. It seems there are some trolley lines, but again, without knowledge of where I want to go, I don't know if they will be helpful or not. I do not care about hitting up every one of the top-ten tourist sites. To be cliche, I am more interested in experiencing the actual New Orleans rather than the tourist version of the city. Suggestions?

I want to move to New Orleans in December/January. I will be a registered nurse with a bachelor's degree. I don't know anyone who lives there. I'm looking for any advice or encouragement. I am going to New Orleans on business. I will be on the edge of the French Quarter and am looking for restaurants that serve at least one vegetarian dish, preferably in or near the French Quarter. Cheap is not required and in fact for many meals higher end would be preferable. [more inside]
I'm going to be visiting New Orleans with my kids. We try to go every year and this trip we'll be staying around a month. I'd like to have a regular doctor or medical practice so that I don't need to visit a hospital emergency room for something minor. We have travel insurance, and most of our party will be US citizens.
My wife and I are traveling to New Orleans between June 14th and June 18th for our 1st anniversary. What should we do there? Relevant details: we're both vegetarian, both like jazz and beer and museums, I love funk music, she's into fancy cocktails and cool-looking old buildings. Neither of us have ever been before. Any recommendations for vegetarian restaurants would be especially appreciated.
The Lady and I are taking our first cruise this Sunday. Leaving New Orleans and heading to Belize, Roatan, Costa Maya and Cozumel. I've been to N.O. before, but neither of us have been any of the other places. Any pro-tips, suggestions or amusing anecdotes about any of those places? We really have no idea what to expect... I'll be visiting New Orleans next weekend for a double bachelor party (my brother and a friend of his). I'm helping to plan the event - what should we do? We're looking for perhaps 1) a great restaurant for a nice meal, 2) a club with bottle service or something like that, and 3) maybe a place to watch the ballet, so to speak. There will be about 15-20 of us. Thanks for your advice and suggestions.

I'll finally be going to Jazz Fest in New Orleans this year. Does anyone know if there are open jam sessions around the city during the festival? I don't have any illusions about playing with famous folks, but it would be nice to get together with some other musicians and play jazz. (I'm a vocalist, if that makes any difference).

My wife is traveling to New Orleans this weekend, and I'd like her to pick me up a (vinyl) record or two. The place she's staying is on the edge of the French Quarter and Faubourg Marigny. Can anyone recommend some cool record stores in that general vicinity where she could pick up N.O. jazz/blues vinyl? I've done a bit of searching, but most of the places I've found seem to stock mostly CDs.

Some friends and I will be in New Orleans from June 11-17th for a conference, and were wondering if there's any good way to help out with the injured birds then. It sounds like the shore work is off-limits due to toxicity, so we're fine contributing in any way we can (coffee/hugs/protests?). What are some good organizations to contact for this, since we'll only be available for a short amount of time (1 full day on that Wednesday perhaps, or maybe some afternoons of other days)? If it matters, we'll be car-free (though cab-savvy) and situated near the convention center. Thanks!

The last (I fervently hope) New Orleans wedding question: After the ceremony (on April 2) at the Dauphine Orleans we're having dinner at Restaurant August rather than a music and drinks reception. I'm in New Orleans the week of the 13th-20th and have very few plans for what to do during the day (by myself) or at night (with a friend). Suggestions for acoustic music venues in New Orleans? I'll be visiting NOLA in a couple of weeks and would appreciate some advice about likely spots to hear live music. My tastes run to acoustic Americana, a touch of twang okay, bluesy too, and I already have a basic notion of the more touristy Dixieland scene from previous visits (all of them pre-Katrina). As examples of my interests I would mention the Nawlins-based musicians Mary Gauthier and Anders Osborne (or at least his folkier side). Thanks!

My erstwhile traveling companion and I are going to visit The Big Easy in the dead of August, specifically the 13th - 18th. What would be some activities we could do during the daylight hours to keep cool and out of the sun and are there still any Goth nights or the like to entertain us after dark? We are pale, Gothy types who have been to NOLA a few times but never this time of year.
