Very quick (& time sensitive) question: my 40th is February 23rd. The weekend before that is radically cheaper to fly & stay in New Orleans than the weekend after. Much of what we like is the parades & atmosphere on St. Charles. I see there are many parades on the 18th & 19th; is this a similar atmosphere to the weekend just prior to Mardi Gras, or is it muted/different? [more inside]
Hello! I will be visiting New Orleans in a week, and have never been. What should I plan to wear, both from a climate and a culture perspective? [more inside]
Planning a first (and likely only) trip to New Orleans for the 1st week in April. We will celebrate our anniversary, but also have our 12 yr old son along. Having read older questions, I'm still looking for tips, suggestions for specific tours, etc and wondering what a reasonable timeline would be. [more inside]
Husband and I are heading to New Orleans for Thanksgiving and I have a three part question. We are driving from Austin and just booked a hotel in the French Quarter from Wednesday to Sunday. It will be our first time there. I saw this question from 2009 and this one from 2013 which are both very helpful. My questions: 1) what should first-time visitors do to soak it in? 2) are there Thanksgiving related events or meal recommendations? 3) How is the drive from Austin to NOLA and are there any noteworthy stops? About us: originally from Northeast, just moved to Austin this Fall, love ethnic food, do not need turkey or traditional Thanksgiving fare, like visiting new cities and spending hours walking around.
Mrs COD and myself will be arriving in town on the 30th, and leaving on the 3rd. It looks like we will miss the parades and most if not all of the pre-31st activities. So what shouldn't we miss on Halloween itself, and what restaurants / museums, etc. should be put on our itinerary? I've been to N.O. once, for DrupalCon earlier this year. I was busy with the 'Con and saw little beyond getting to Frenchman's Street one night for some blues. WWII Museum is on my list. Beyond that - looking for ideas.
I'm visiting NOLA from Chicago. Would like to watch the debate tonight, at a democratic friendly bar. Where? Also because I'm using a question, things to do this week, places to go and yummy food recommendations are encouraged and welcome. Staying near Benachi House.
I am visiting New Orleans to see some family with my two year old, so I'm looking for activities or places (touristy or otherwise) that would be good for family outings with my son. I'm open to anything, though parks and museums are probably the best bet. Even places just to spend an hour or two would be great.
I am renting a very large 3 bedroom, 2.5 bath house in a touristy area of New Orleans. I am considering renting out my guest suite on AirBnB for 1 or 2 weekends a month to make some extra cash. What do I need to be thinking about? Should I or shouldn't I consider this? [more inside]
I'm going off of photos of folks in New Orleans after Katrina--not everybody is wearing a full respirator, but folks seem to be often protecting their airways. What specifically are people in such a situation worried about exposing themselves to? [more inside]
I'll be accompanying a group of college students to a conference in New Orleans later in the week, and we're looking at going out to dinner Thursday night. Where should we go? We need somewhere on the cheaper side, maybe $15 max for entrees, with cheaper options available if they just want something small. Easy access from canal or the convention center area, and easy seating for around 12. [more inside]
Where can I hear Dixieland/New Orleans-style jazz in the Boston area? Dunno if I'm using the right terms - it's the jazz I hear on the show Treme, in Somerville's Honk! parade, and at Mardi Gras parties and parades.
I'm planning our ten-year anniversary, complete with stays in Memphis and New Orleans in mid-to-late September. I've booked the tickets on Amtrak, and would ideally ship our bikes so we can get around car-free. Can you help me locate good areas to stay? [more inside]
Married couple, 30 years old, Florida. First extended trip together (5 nights?), as a couple, since our honeymoon 9 years ago. We are looking for a place to stay in New Orleans that is both nice, charming, with the New Orleans feel - and more on the affordable side. (less than $150/160 a night) [more inside]
I've been invited to spend Mardi Gras with family friends in New Orleans. I'll be there for an extended visit, from Feb. 5th through the 10th, but I've never even been to NO, let alone experienced Mardi Gras, and it sounds kind of...intense. [more inside]
I'm thinking of heading to New Orleans at Christmas. Nuts? [more inside]
Traveling to New Orleans via train in March. Staying for three nights. Would like to know which hotels in the French Quarter are pretty cool without being pretty expensive. Centrally located with balconies is a plus. More Hotel Chelsea than Plaza Hotel if that makes sense. Would rather a bohemian vibe than a 4-star, but would like to avoid any flea bags.
I'm heading to New Orleans with my wife for the first time in a couple weeks. She'll be attending a conference for a few days, so I'll have about 2 days to explore by myself and then we'll hang out in the evenings. We/I have already got a few ideas of what to do, but I'm looking for some more suggestions. [more inside]

I'm working at a meeting in New Orleans next week - arriving Wednesday afternoon and leaving Saturday afternoon. I have breaks during the day and free evenings. Previously, I toured Jackson Square, Bourbon Street, the Superdome, and the Garden District via streetcar. I'll be staying one block from the French Quarter - a twenty minute walk from Cafe Du Monde, which I will take advantage of daily. [more inside]
We've got airmiles to burn and a long weekend at the start of December. Probably looking for info on a city in southern USA or some arts festival in the Americas. [more inside]

Please help me understand Mardi Gras. So I'm trying to get my fortune cookie business off the ground and a customer recently requested a Mardi Gras theme (despite the fact that the date is well passed) I think she means New Orleans themed. What does this mean? As far as I can tell the colors green and purple are good. Honestly any suggestions for themes with the fortunes or the packaging would be great.
I'm flying out of New Orleans tomorrow and for nostalgic reasons would like to get a six-pack of Terrapin Rye to bring with me before leaving. I'm staying downtown near Canal and Chartres -- is there anywhere around here that has it? A Rouses, maybe? [more inside]

I'm going to New Orleans in a few days to cover a conference for a client. I will be going a half day early and staying an extra ~2 days more. I have limited time to do research, and do plan to go through the archives and NYT recommendation article. However, I was hoping to dig up any recommendations as to other things to see/check out when I'm there, and this seems to be an easy way to do so. [more inside]
This is a long shot, but does anybody know a good mechanic in the New Orleans area who'll work on my old 4Runner? I'm having a hard time finding one for some reason. [more inside]
I'm somewhat last-minute booking a trip to NOLA, and have never been before, so I'm floundering a bit in sorting through my hotel decisions. There's tons of advice on where to eat, but very little on where to sleep! Which we do plan to do at least once. ;) So dear MeFites, where should the boy and I park ourselves between beignets? Does New Orleans have an open-air market for dental tools? Back in the late '90s, I visited New Orleans with my parents. I have one memory from that trip that I am still bedeviled by. One afternoon, we headed to a big open-air market -- rows and rows of stalls, I think under some kind of canopy, various goods for sale. I guess this was probably the French Market, but I don't specifically remember. As we got further and further into the market, the stalls started to get a little funny. Everyone had POW-MIA flags, and I saw one that read, "KILL THEM ALL AND LET GOD SORT THEM OUT." [more inside]
This morning I was talking to my wife about Lee Dorsey and the Meters, and we put on the tune "Cissy Strut." The Meters also have a tune called "Sophisticated Cissy." I was wondering - what does the word "cissy" mean to the Meters? Are they using it the same way i would use the word "sissy"? Or did it mean something different in 1969 than it does now?
My girlfriend and I are going to New Orleans for Jazz Fest later this month. Although we'll spend a fair amount of time at the festival, we'd like to spend some time exploring NOLA itself. Looking for awesome restaurants, bars and fun things to do in New Orleans [more inside]

My wife and I will be visiting New Orleans at the end of this month with our almost 1-year old son. Having the baby with us has required two contingencies: we are renting a car, and our days will have to end by 6:30 or 7 pm-ish (although they do start at 6:30-7am). We will also need to find a quiet place for him to nap during the day, or else sit in the car/return to our lodging for an hour or so. I am hoping he'll nap in the stroller as we wander the city, but can't take this for granted. Given this, and the fact that we only have two days (Friday-22 and Monday-25, the weekend is taken up by the wedding we are travelling for) how best to organize our time? Any advice on travelling with an infant? [more inside]
