Yalers or Whalers?

Should I live in Hartford or New Haven, Connecticut? I'm moving to Connecticut tomorrow, though I'm not sure which city yet. I'm doing a 80-day contract for my company and they're gonna put me up in a 1-bedroom apartment of some sort. I don't have too much control over where I'm at within either city, but I can choose which one I'd prefer to be in. Either way, I'll be spending commuting at least twice a week between the two.

My company is going to pay for a fairly nice place, centrally located, so I'm not worried about quality of accomodations. However, I've never been to either city, don't know anyone in either location and don't really know anything about either place (except Yale is in New Haven, and I'll be working very near the campus). I'll have a car.

Important criteria to me: I like access to biking paths, hiking, nice coffee shops with wifi where I can do most of my work, good non-chain restaurants, historical stuff, easy access to trains to Boston and NY. I hate sprawl and traffic.

So.. is there any big difference? Is the Yale campus and student atmosphere a cool place for a 31 year old non-student? Is Hartford uhm... I have no idea what to say about Hartford. Is this six on one, half a dozen on the other?

Where to go on a weekend trip from New Haven?

Where to go while I'm based in New Haven this summer? I'm from San Diego and I'm doing an internship in New Haven, CT this summer (June 16th August 16th). I did the same internship last summer - it was my first time on the East Coast and I spent a little time exploring, but the internship did keep me pretty busy.

Now that I'm more familiar with the area (downtown New Haven, definitely - I didn't, and won't, have a car), I'd like to venture beyond. I did a few trips to NYC while I was there, but they got expensive mostly consisted of me being jostled, sweaty and overwhelmed (this must be part of the charm?) - I'd only consider going back once or twice while I'm there this summer.

I'm trying to think of places I could go for a weekend - last summer I wanted to head out to Boston, but never made it since I didn't know the best way to get there (here's where you come in!). I'd also love to travel to Montreal, but I think it might be too far for a weekend trip.

Can I rent a car (I'm 20)? Fly? Train? Where should I go? I'm not filthy rich, but I am willing to spend a little bit in order to experience what the Northeast has to offer!

Best time to look for a New Haven apartment starting Aug. 1?

When is the best time to look for an apartment in New Haven with an August 1 lease? Most of this apartment-hunt is going to be Chicago-based, but there will be a chance for a brief visit to New Haven. The question is how to time that visit for the best chance at finding a place.

18 hours in new haven

I'll be in New Haven, CT all on my lonesome from approximately 3:00pm on a Friday until roughly noon on a Saturday. Suggestions for a good dinner or breakfast? Maybe a coffee shop with free wi-fi? bonus question: what's the drive like from Bradley International Airport to New Haven? Google maps tells me it's about an hour, but what about traffic and the like?
