New Hampshire over Christmas

Going to New Hampshire over Christmas. Ideas for places to stay and a FWD car rental question. My wife and I are flying into Boston for 4 days/4 nights over Christmas. Ideally we'd stay no more than 4 hours drive from Boston for at least three nights, and be within reach of a ski field. We are currently thinking of staying near Woodstock, NH or near Mt Washington. My wife really wants to do the whole white Christmas, so suggestions on great little inns and locations to stay would be appreciated (the cuter, the better!)

Also, I've seen this previous thread about winter rental cars in Boston, which seems to suggest a FWD drive car + safe driving practices would generally be okay, but really wanted to confirm if the same holds true if we venture out north from Boston city and suburbs into New Hampshire. We'd like to be able to get to the local ski resorts (without too much hassle), and I doubt we'd be straying too far off the interstates at that time of the year. Is a FWD drive rental generally going to be okay in this situation?

Travel in the NewEngland states. A little help please?

Travel plans through the Northeast (New England States) Looking for the fun/quirky ideas. Myself and my g/f - we know we want to travel in the New England area for about week (from Aug 7th-12th). We're cheap and we like to keep it that way (but don't want to camp in tents.)

We're thinking about going to the Arlington craft sale in VT on sat the 8th and the Mystic Outdoor festival on the 9th...

And beyond that, we don't know. We're mobile, adults (late 30s), I've traveled more than she has; but this is a first (a random cartrip vacation together.) She's never been to a BnB (so kitchy little cheaper ones are good...)

Not so interested in food festivals, but a brewery visit is fine...music festivals aren't our cup of tea either. Also a no-go anything involving the caging of animals (circuses and zoos make the baby jesus cry.)

Maybe a meetup (or crashing at a mefi's place) would be fun too.

C'mon - Give us your best. Feel free to toss in quirky or touristy 'don't miss' things

New England Car Needed

I'm moving to the Upper Valley of New Hampshire in a month and need to buy a car for the first time. Help me choose the right one. We've narrowed it down basically to two general options: something resembling a 2 year old Subaru Outback and something resembling a new Prius. Our choice will depend on the availability of options, incentives at the time of purchase, and the necessity of getting an all-wheel drive vehicle for the harsh winters versus the fuel efficiency of getting a hybrid for our monthly trips to NYC. What, o great metahivemind, do you suggest we do?

New London NH or Lebanon/West Lebanon NH ?

My spouse works at Dartmouth College in Hanover NH, since April. We are therefore going to be moving from coastal Maine to the Upper Valley and we're having a hard time finding affordable housing that's within walking distance of a decent town, one with at least one good coffee shop, a number of useful stores, public library, banks, pub, and ways to meet other people like bookgroups, classes, informal gatherings. Being near good public transit (to Boston, e.g.) would be nice, too. ... ... My question is, should we try to live close to Hanover, close to New London (which is 35 mins south of Hanover but has a good coffee shop and very cheap and interesting classes through the college there!), or perhaps try another town? We've ruled out Claremont, White River Junction, Wilder, Windsor, Eastman, and the rural areas for various reasons after spending time house-hunting in all of them. We've looked for something near the green in Lebanon but nothing has come on the market that matches what we're seeking and is within 3/4 mile of the green.

There are houses in West Leb (1 mile from D'mouth) and New London that we are currently considering but we can't decide on location. Spouse doesn't mind the NL commute (had similar one in Maine) but I might mind the distance to get to Dartmouth for plays, music, restaurants, etc. Would New London offer enough?

Help?

Ye olde NorthEast

Mobile Phone coverage in Hanover, New Hampshire? General winter tips? Things to avoid? I need tips for moving to NH. Who I should use for mobile phone service in Hanover, New Hampshire and surrounding areas? It seems like Tmobile is spotty at best, and At&t or Verizon are better options. I need to have a working phone. I'd love to get an iPhone, so I'm hoping At&t works well there, but a working phone trumps any specific carrier.

Will T mobile let me out of the remaining time on my contract without a fight if their coverage out there is horrid?

I know next to nothing about the area really. I went back during winter and people had their windshield wipers stuck straight up in the air, presumably so they wouldn't freeze to the windshield.

I need more tips like this. Do I need to do anything special with my car battery? Do I need to make sure I clean snow off of my car even if I'm not going anywhere? etc.

The phone issue is major and I'm mostly concerned about surviving 6 months of winter, but really any tips you can give me about living in the Hanover/Lebanon/Concord area of New Hampshire are helpful.

Wilder, VT versus Lebanon/Hanover NH.

Wilder, VT versus Lebanon/Hanover NH. I recently got a job in Hanover, NH. I am looking for places to live and am trying to decide between living in the Lebanon/Hanover area or a cheaper place that I found in Wilder, VT. What are the pros and cons of renting in Wilder, VT versus the Lebanon/Hanover, NH area? I have heard there is a state income tax and sales tax in Vermont and I am trying to gauge how much this would affect me since I would be renting (vs. owning) and would be able to buy most anything I needed in Lebanon. Any other things to consider?

Any help/advice/suggestions are greatly appreciated. Also, if you have any suggestions for places to live in the area (hidden gems) let me know.

Seeking places in Northern New England to take our puppy! We're picking our English Shepherd puppy up this weekend and are looking forward to a summer of puppy classes, hiking and swimming. The trouble is, we've got classes squared away, but where can we go to play? We're in central Vermont (near Montpelier) and would be willing to drive a couple of hours each way, more if there's a park where we can camp nearby. As far as I can tell, most state parks in VT, NH and ME don't allow dogs out of the campgrounds and hiking trails. We'd love to find a dog-friendly lake or dog beach or similar.

We want to be sure that he gets plenty of experience in the world off of our property, I just haven't got any idea about where to take him!

Mz. Billtron and I are moving from Brooklyn, New York, to Hanover, New Hampshire, this summer. I know nothing about that part of the country and would appreciate any advice or recommendations that will make the transition a great one. We're going to need a car. We'd get a Prius if we were moving elsewhere, so what should we get for the snow?
I am going to miss my Gorilla Coffee. What should I switch to?
Where should I buy beer? Where should I buy beer-making supplies?
What's a reasonable distance to travel to do something interesting, and what's within that radius that I should check out?
My dad really wants to canoe down the Connecticut River. Is that the best place to go canoeing nearby?
What else should I know?

Do you know of any nice trails very close to Milton, NH? Or a good way to find them without great web access? I'm currently in Milton, NH, right on the border with Maine, for a week's vacation. I'd like to go walking on pretty trails in the woods for a couple of hours, as short of a drive away as possible. I've visited the trails at the New Hampshire Farm Museum, which may or may not be the same as Jones Forest. On the web, I see a couple of places that are very small, and other places that are much bigger, but considerably farther. Jennings Forest is listed on the state parks site, but I don't know if it has much in the way of trails. I don't have great web access. Any ideas where I should go? I've called some of the NH state forestry and parks numbers (I didn't try Maine yet), with no luck.

Where in Vermont should we go camping?

Where in New England should we go camping? We have a pop-up camper and are looking for decent hiking trails and maybe some area attractions. An alpine slide would be a big plus! I have a few Vermont ideas, (Killington, Gifford Woods, Bromley Mountain) and would like some feedback or new ideas. We are planning a three day midweek camping trip July 28th-31st and have been looking in Vermont.

We would like
-Drive in campsite
-Secluded area (woodsy prefered, not open fields with parking spaces!)
-Hiking trails (we're semi-experienced but up for a challenge)
-Water&Electric Hook ups - although it seems that most state parks only have water or no hook ups at all. Is this a good reason to go to a campground instead, or is a state park a better choice? (cheaper? more secluded?)
-Some area attractions. I have seen a few alpine slides, something I'd love to get to do, and also a couple places have gondolas and rent mountain bikes for a ride down the mountain.

Right now my idea is going to Killington Mountain and camping at Gifford Woods State Park.
I have also looked at White River Valley Campground. It's 15 miles from Killington, but would be nice to have hook ups. Is it worth it? Or is it better to stay in the state park, skip the hook ups and be more in the woods and have more trails to hike?
We have checked out Bromley Mountain also, but don't know where to camp around there.

Any suggestions, or any other areas that I haven't found yet?
I'm open to Central and Southern Vermont, and also Western Mass or New Hampshire.

Dayhikes in the White Mountains

White Mountains Hiking. Need a great dayhike for two middle-aged women and two teens, all fit and adventurous. What would you recommend? Friends are coming to visit, and it's a great chance to start getting to know the White Mountains with a fun hike. This will be in August, and we'll have about a 1.5 hour drive before arriving at any trailhead in the Whites. I've always dreamed of hiking Mt. Washington, but I don't think this is the day - the teens might not want to spend the 8+ hours on the trail. I was thinking about Franconia Notch, which seems to have nifty things like waterfalls and maybe some swimming opportunities. What would you recommend?

Mt. Washington, NH, lodging: We are planning a family trip to the NE this fall, and one potential stop (at my request) is Mt. Washington, New Hampshire. A cursory search makes it appear that the upscale Bretton Woods resort is the only lodging in the immediate vicinity. While we are not averse to staying there, are there other, cheaper options in the area? We are veteran travelers who are equally comfortable in budget dives and overpriced resorts, so we are less concerned with amenities than having a convenient place to stay while we take a day trip to Mt. Washington while enroute between Niagara falls and Nova Scotia. we are also happy to hear any suggestion for other neat, quirky, and not well-known things in that part of the country; for example, we have gone out of our way to see the Belted Galloways in Rockport and the Owls Head Transportation Museum. As always, thanks in advance for your help.

A Little Beauty Help for an African Queen?

Manchester, NH: Where can I find beauty salons that cater to African hair (braids, weaves, extensions, texture)? I'm helping someone who is moving to Manchester, New Hampshire. She's black and looking for salons that can do black hair. So far my google-fu and superpages are coming up short. Is there anyone who can help?

She doesn't know her way around, so names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, would be really helpful. If you know their hours, even better.

Didn't Clinton and Obama tie in New Hampshire?

If the point of a Presidential Primary is to determine how many delegates will vote for a given person in the next phase of picking a nominee, and both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama got 9 pledged delegates in New Hampshire, didn't they tie? I'm not necessarily for Clinton or Obama, and I don't want to talk about the merits of any candidate. I'm just curious about the mechanics of this one thing, and why, even though they both got 9 delegates, Hillary Clinton is the winner of New Hampshire.

Let's never have another 2004

I feel the same frustration every presidential primary season. This time around, I'd like to do something about it. So, I'm a concerned citizen from Washington State, where we're less than irrelevant when it comes to nominating presidential candidates. In 2004, I watched in horror as primary voters and the DNC nominated John Kerry over much more formidable, charismatic candidates. I don't want to have that same helpless feeling this time around -- this election's too important to spend much time on the sidelines.

So, here's my question. I haven't any spare income to make any campaign donations. And I'm only interested in moving in Iowa or New Hampshire once every four years. With these things in mind, how can the actions of a citizen in the Pacific Northwest have maximum impact on the outcomes of the Iowa and New Hampshire primaries, and thus the Democratic nomination?

I've withheld my candidate of choice in the hopes that this will help prevent a derail.

Thank you!

Can you help us find a cabin next July in VT or NH?

Can you recommend a summer cabin in VT or NH for next July that could accomodate four adults and their five kids? We're two families, totaling four adults and five kids, including one toddler. We'd like to find something Montpelier-ish or south in VT, or within an hour of Concord in NH. But we'd go for something elsewhere in those states if it's a lovely situation. (We've enjoyed Burlington before, from a motel room.)

We'd like to keep the kids busy, so a swimmable lake or stream would be a plus, or other things that would interest kids 3-10.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Good Bread in NH?

Where can I buy Milton's Bread in the Seacoast area of New Hampshire? I love Milton's 100% Whole Wheat Bread, but getting it requires a 45 minute drive to Trader Joes in Peabody. I'd rather not have to drive so far just for a couple of loaves of bread. Is there anywhere nearer Portsmouth, NH, that sells it?

Barring that, can anyone recommend another brand that's similar to Miltons and is sold more widely in New England?

Blueberries for Sal

Tips for camping with toddlers? We're taking our two-year-old boy camping in a few weeks.

We've never been camping with a child before so we're not sure what kind of things we will wish we had brought along once we're there.

We'll be picking a spot in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, somewhere near the road, where we can drive up to the camp site, build a fire, set up the tent, and not worry too much about being remote. We'll pick a site where there are restrooms nearby, and hopefully there won't be too many sketchy or rowdy campers in proximity

For the parents among you, what tips do you have for camping with a toddler? What mistakes have you made that you won't make again? What essentials do we need to pack besides the diapers, the first aid kit, and the usual camping gear?

Bonus points if you can recommend the very best White Mountain campground, especially if we can pick and eat blueberries there.

Portsmouth to Portland

Cheap flight to Portsmouth + 4 days = what to see? Skybus just started operating out of my hometown, so I got two round trip tickets to Portsmouth for $20 each. I've been to Portland before, and loved it, so I'm glad to be heading back to that general area...but there's a lot to choose from. We'll be there from June 3-8, and we'll rent a car for longer forays. I saw this question, and got some great ideas - just wondered if anyone had any alternate suggestions based on the time of year we're going, or tips about something new/not mentioned last time. I'm not much of a big city girl, so I probably won't venture near Boston...would much rather head North again. Should I poke about Portsmouth first, or save that for the day we leave?
