My partner and I just found out last night that we have been chosen as adoptive parents to a baby... who is due in September! So, suddenly lots to do and lots to learn. Where do we even start?! Instruction manuals, blogs, scholarly articles, To Do Lists, To Don't Do Lists... What are the resources you found indispensable? Which did you find later that you wished you'd had earlier? Which are a waste of my time? We have wonderful family and friends who I know will help us figure all of this out, but I need to start building up my own arsenal of resources.

Currently 10 weeks pregnant with our first. We are trying to brainstorm everything we can possibly do ahead of time to make maternity leave and the first weeks/months home with a newborn go as smoothly as possible. Some examples: buy a chest freezer and fill it with meals that can just be popped in the microwave or oven. Save up for doggie day care passes to get our dogs out of the house and tired out in the beginning.
Veteran parents, please enlighten us as to anything and everything else we can be doing to help us get through the acclimation period! [more inside]

We're Brits in Washington DC about to have our first baby! We have bicycles but don't own a car (use Zipcar / taxis). All the standard baby-prep advice seems to assume owning a car... so do you guys have any tips for car-free baby living? In particular: car seats (for occasional use / quick installation), diaper services and bike trailers? Details inside! [more inside]

So many great pads available to soften hard mattresses, but nothing seems to go the other direction. What are some creative ways to make our cushy pillowtop mattress firm enough for safe cosleeping with a new baby? [more inside]

Our 21 day old daughter is tongue-tied (ankyloglossia). The doctor wants to do the clip (lingual frenectomy) under general anesthesia by default, and we're uncomfortable with that. Is general anesthesia appropriate by default for this? Should we be concerned?

I'm flying tonight from Boston to Pittsburgh with a one month old baby. I know not to bring any liquids in my carry-on luggage with me, per the news today. Will they let me bring the car seat on with me, or will I have to check it? What else should I expect, in terms of flying with a newborn?
