An on-demand mother's helper/babysitter in the Cambridge/Somerville area

Can anyone recommend a part-time mother's helper that can get to North Cambridge? We want extra support for a week in taking care of this guy. The mom will be at home, and we want to reduce the chances that she gets overwhelmed, starting this Wednesday, after his grandma goes home, and I go back to work.

How Is Babby Cared For: Crash Course in Babby 101

My partner and I just found out last night that we have been chosen as adoptive parents to a baby... who is due in September! So, suddenly lots to do and lots to learn. Where do we even start?! Instruction manuals, blogs, scholarly articles, To Do Lists, To Don't Do Lists... What are the resources you found indispensable? Which did you find later that you wished you'd had earlier? Which are a waste of my time? We have wonderful family and friends who I know will help us figure all of this out, but I need to start building up my own arsenal of resources.

Pregnant with first child, during a chaotic and stressful time

Due to an incredible amount of life changes (including marraige, move, new job and death of a parent) I have barely been able to do all the things you are supposed to do when you are pregnant with your first child. Due date is a little over am month away. On top of that I have gained too much weight and feel very uncomfortable, especially at work. My questions range from how do I make the next six weaks bearable (especially at my desk job) given I've outgrown my maternity clothes and feel really uncomfortable physically, to what are the top three things I must learn and/or have before baby arrives? Always be prepared?

Currently 10 weeks pregnant with our first. We are trying to brainstorm everything we can possibly do ahead of time to make maternity leave and the first weeks/months home with a newborn go as smoothly as possible. Some examples: buy a chest freezer and fill it with meals that can just be popped in the microwave or oven. Save up for doggie day care passes to get our dogs out of the house and tired out in the beginning. Veteran parents, please enlighten us as to anything and everything else we can be doing to help us get through the acclimation period! [more inside]

Did you enjoy your parental leave?

Our first child is due in the next few weeks! This isn't a question about getting ready - we've done a lot of preparation (see inside). I want to know how you enjoyed those first crazy weeks. Were you able to relax into the sleep deprivation and rhythm-less newborn life? Do you look back on those days fondly? We expect to be tired and frazzled, but we want to intentionally savor this special time. We will have ~8 weeks at home together with our baby. Tell me how you did it. [more inside]

What's to like about having a fall birthday?

I’m currently expecting my first child, who is due around Halloween. I have some minor and probably totally inconsequential—yet nagging—worries about her expected birthdate, and would love if those of you who are late fall babies OR a parent of a late fall baby would come in and assuage my concerns. How can I get my newborn to stay asleep?

We're using all the advice from the Happiest Baby on the Block to get Little Stardust to fall asleep. It works the majority of the time and I can successfully get him to fall asleep by swaddling, rocking, white noise, etcetera. The problem is that he'll only stay asleep as long as I'm holding him. Earplugs/muffs to block out a crying baby

In the next two weeks, there will be a new addition to our household -- a baby. (Not mine.) And since it's not mine, I would prefer not to hear it. There are lots of AskMes about earplugs, but many (like the ETY ones) use as a selling point that they don't muffle speech. I want to muffle everything. Best ear protection for the job, <$30?
