I should've paid the extra for the direct flight.

Help me with my flight connecting through Newark next week. So many details after the cut. I've read this question, which was helpful but I still have more questions. Details - Next Monday, I am flying from Toronto to Newark, then connecting to a flight to Hong Kong, all on Continental. I believe, that at Newark I will have to pick up my checked bag and recheck it, as well as go through security again. (I clear US customs in Toronto.)

The problem is that the connection time is 1 hr 11min. As far as I can tell, this is a very popular flight (Flight 2923 and Flight 99) YYZ-EWR-HKG so presumably in normal circumstances the time is sufficient. However because of the security delays I am worried about both legs of the flight.

To complicate matters, since the flight into Newark is from Canada, no cabin baggage is allowed. Purses and laptops seem to be exceptions.

I'm so stressed about this. Can anyone enlighten me about the following?
Will I have to change terminals?
Will I have to check/recheck my suitcase?

Regarding the new restrictions> Can I bring a small purse AND a laptop bag? Would I be better off bringing ONE bigger laptop bag that could hold my pursey stuff?

Any other tips about Newark or Continental would be greatly appreciated. (FYI - I am accustomed to long-haul flights etc. just stressed about this particular situation at this time. I also have relatives in Jersey, so I hope I will not be calling them to pick me up if it all goes to ratshit.)

Brick City?

Has anyone from Newark (or who follows Newark politics) seen Brick City? If so, what do you think? Shamefully, although I'm only a PATH ride away, I don't have a good enough sense of Newark politics to think critically about the documentary. it seemed pretty biased in favor of Booker's administration, presumably because the filmmakers needed Booker's office for continued access. (For instance, in the film's depiction of a power struggle over leadership of the police force, only Garry McCarthy's side was really presented).

So, what did the doc leave out? Did it do a good job of presenting some of the struggles facing the city, or was is overly melodramatic (and/or overly like The Wire)? How's Cory Booker doing, in your opinion? And for that matter, how's Newark these days?

Stay in Newark ,commute to manhattan? Man hotels are pricey in Manhattan,
We are thinking of staying in Newark and commuting daily into the city.
Can anyone offer some advice as to if this is a bad idea or not? We are early risers and not late party people.
Would love to know of some affordable options between the two

Is a frequent flyer club worth it for 1-3 RT flights?

I'm in Seattle and my girlfriend is in New Jersey. It's going to be like this for the next 8 months. We plan on visiting each other 5 times during those months (either me going there or her coming here). With this being the case, is it worth signing up for a frequent flyer club? I read through this thread which was really helpful but I still have two specific questions:

1. We're not sure who will be visiting who so is there a way to have a joint membership so we could share the benefits? If not, is it even worth signing up if we only have 1-3 RT flights each?

2. We only want to fly from Newark, which limits the airlines we can choose from. We're leaning towards joining Continental Onepass. Would you suggest otherwise?

What say you, hive mind? What program should we join, if any?

Traffic driving from Western, MA to Newark, NJ next Sunday?

Should I expect traffic driving from Western, MA to Newark Liberty Airport next Sunday afternoon between Noon and 3 PM? Google is telling me to take this route. Basically, I-91S to I-95S.

I'm supposed to pick someone up at 3:00PM. If I leave at 11AM, I should have plenty of time, right? Google tells me 3 hours and 22 minutes. Does that sound about right? Is there any reason why these roads will be a disaster next Sunday afternoon? Are there alternate routes that I should consider?

I'll then turn around and drive back. Will that be a traffic nightmare?

Bonus question: What's the deal with short term parking at Newark Liberty?

Parking at EWR?

I need to get from Philly area to Newark Airport. I can drive, but airport parking is expensive. I will be gone for 9 days. Is there a better way? The cheapest near-airport parking I can find is $8/day at E-Z way parking. I have read some bad reviews of it (things missing from cars, minor damage), but I am not too concerned with that since I drive an old worthless car and won't be leaving any valuables. Still, that will be $72 just for parking.

Do I have any better options? I've looked into driving to a NJ train station (Princeton Junction or Hamilton) and taking NJ transit the rest of the way -- those stations have cheaper daily parking. But I'm hearing that the daily lots tend to fill up early in the morning. My flight is around 7pm, so I won't be trying to park until late afternoon (going early in the morning isn't an option, I only took a half-day from work).

A cab ride would clearly be much more expensive as would be taking amtrak from Philly and Newark. Any other ideas? Thanks.

Getting to Newark from Manhattan

Cheapest way to get to Newark airport from the city? I have a flight out of Newark at 9pm Monday night. I'll be running around Manhattan most of that day with only a small overnight bag, so luggage isn't an issue. I'm trying to find the cheapest way to get to Newark from where ever in the city I can get to by subway. I took the Blue Van into the city, which was cheap, but I don't think they do pick-ups to take you back to the airport. I prefer something uncomplicated, meaning I don't want to have to take two trains and then two buses or anything like that, but also cheap, so no NYC cabs straight there. Something in the middle would be best. I don't know exactly where I'll be in the city when it's time for me to leave, but I'm open and can catch a train anywhere.
Thanks for your help!

Cheap travel from Delaware to NYC?

What are the cheapest ways to get from Newark, Delaware, to New York City? I'm a research assistant at the University of Delaware and as part of a long and wonkish I-95 corridor project, we've decided to produce a map or informational pamphlet letting students know the cheapest ways to get from here (Newark, Delaware) to New York City.

A few things to keep in mind:
1. Any mode of transportation is fair game (air, rail, highway, seaports, etc.), as is any type of vehicle (plane, train, automobile, bus, shoes, etc.).
2. Be creative, but within reasonable limits of safety (i.e., no airmailing oneself).
3. It's alright if many of the suggested travel methods begin in Philadelphia (and maybe even Baltimore) if these departure points are more familiar to you.
4. Cost is the most important factor, although I don't want to discourage that outlandish teleportation idea you've been waiting to uncork.

After we've completed the map or pamphlet, I'll contact each of the contributors about mailing them a finished product. Thank you.

Where is the parking lot with the great view of the Newark Airport runway shown at the beginning of the final episode of the Sopranos? Any other great spots like that near any airports you know of (bonus points if they're in NJ/NY). Remember that scene in Wayne's World where they're laying on the grass and planes take off right over their heads? No? Well I'm looking for awesome spots like that. Perhaps I've seen too many bad movies from the early 90's, but I think that would make a great spot to hang out.

Railroad tracks on fire.

So, when traveling on PATH toward Newark tonight, I noticed that some of the tracks were on fire. The flames were visible from the window of a Newark-bound PATH train, from just before Harrison about a quarter of a mile past the station toward Newark. These flames weren't on the PATH tracks, but on several different tracks that Amtrak and NJ Transit use. They were mostly blue, and when the doors opened at Harrison, I thought I smelled a natural-gas smell, but it could have been my imagination. This was less than four hours ago (about 11:25 pm).

How on earth would natural gas (or whatever it was) get onto such a long stretch of tracks and ignite?

The Terminal.

Random things to do in the New York airports while working there?... I'm going to be spending 12+ hours a day in the three main NY airports (Newark, JFK, Laguardia) almost every day for the next few weeks. I'm hitting two of them most days and driving between them. I'll be dividing my time between all the public pre-security areas (so no duty free, a limited range of shops and resturants).

I'll be working the whole time, but my schedule is mostly up to me, and I walk around with just a small bag or two. I supervise several people, but I essentially work on my own. So I can't disappear for hours, but I can decide where I'll be and when. The first few days I was there were frustratingly sterile and boring, but now I'm starting to find it funny and sureal. I'm enjoying people watching, but I don't get to stay still for long.

So what interesting games can I play by myself to make the most of this weird situation? I thought of time lapse photgraphy, but I'm too erratic. What should I make sure I see and do? Ideas can be airport specific, or just groundhog day related!

Airport transportation from Newark?

Best way to get from Newark Airport to Jersey City? I'm visiting friends in Jersey City, and flying into Newark in the late afternoon. What's the best way to get to their house, which is about 12 miles from the airport, at Central Ave & Congress St.?
Where's the New York bound 117?

Where do I catch the New York bound NJTransit bus at Newark Airport? Last time I flew out of Newark (EWR), I took the 117 NJTransit bus from Port Authority to get there. It was amazing; $4 one way (as opposed to $13 on the private carriers), nearly empty and it took less than 20 minutes. I felt like I'd cracked some kind of code... the airport route isn't really publicised at all, I suspect to prevent it from cutting into their much more expensive AirTrain service.

Anyway, I neglected to figure out where to catch it to get back to New York, and ended up shelling out the big bucks for the Olympia bus upon my return. When I was dropped off last time, it was on a one-way side road right off of the highway, next to the long-term parking lot on the North end of the airport complex, and, though I suspect that the New York-bound bus stops somewhere nearby, it's highly unlikely that it stops in the exact same spot. I've been studying NJT's crappy little route map, but it's offering me no clues.

Has anyone ever done this before? Where do I go to catch the New York bound Local 117 NJTransit bus at Newark Airport?

Late-evening dinner place between EWR and Parisppany.

I'm looking for a good place for a late-evening dinner between Newark airport (EWR) and Parsippany. I'm flying into EWR from the west coast this Thursday and my flight lands at 8. By the time I get into my rental car for the drive to Parsippany, it's probably about 9:00. If I were to go directly to my hotel, I'd probably check in and be in my room a little before 10, when a lot of restaurants close. This trip I made sure I'm not staying a hotel located in an office park (where a lot of the Parisippany hotels seem to be). There's at least a Wendy's and a McDonald's within a mile or so.

I wondered, though, if I'd be passing by anyplace cool en route from the airport to the hotel. I'm probably not up for a fancy sit down meal by myself after a long flight.

But any suggestions for anything along the way, or in Parisppany even, some place still serving at 9, would be great.

I understand there are some good restaurants in Newark; I have some hesitation based on a sense that it's not so safe (I have no knowledge of Newark, just a nervousness) - please correct me, and also knowing that I'll want to "get on the road" with the rental car, even if that means stopping again 10 minutes down the road. But I'd be curious what people had to say.

New Jersey Layover

I have 11 hours in Newark on the 6th. It's a layover, I have no contacts in the immediate area and although things are getting better, I would like a nice diversion that is not in the airport or Newark itself. Suggs?

And yes, I'm looking at you amberglow.
