I'd like to make a profit off my book.

How much do authors get paid for their published books? Specifics inside. I am writing a book of pagan themed guided meditations that I am going to be submitting to various new age publishers. I think there is a need for this type of book in this particular market. If it does get published, how much could I expect to make from it? If it helps, the publisher I'm really going for Llewellyn (http://www.llewellyn.com/history/submit.php).

Annon because I'm not "out" about my new age beliefs (and would be publishing under a pen name). :)

New Age Top 10

New Age Top 10! We've all read lists of best rock, pop & soul albums - but what would appear on your Top 10 list of recommendations for a New Age noob? I know next to nothing about this world, so I'm trying to learn. I've been researching on Amazon but - as I'm sure is the case with all musical genres - I'm finding there's a lot of chaff I have to wade through before I find the wheat.

I guess specifically I'm looking for chanting or gong, perhaps moving into flute or sitar. But either way, if you have a New Age album you love, or can go as far as a top ten, or perhaps point me towards a site that has recommendations, that'd be awesome.

Book reccomendation based on Michael Chrichton's Travels

I've been reading Michael Chrichton's Travels, and really enjoying his scientific prospective on the metaphysics, mysticism, energy, "New Age" spiritualism, and whatnot -- particularly in stories like "Cactus Teachings." What are some other books/authors you can recommend that approach these topics in Chrichton's skeptical-but-still-interested way? Bonus points for narrative-driven, personal experience stories in the vein of Chrichton.

Hippie Store?

I'm seeking a good New Age/Green/Hippie store in Chicago (northside preferred). With the closing of Healing Earth I need to find a new hippie store! I'm looking for a place with a wide selection of candles, oils, incense, new agey nutrition stuff, fair trade goods, etc. I live in Ravenswood, the closer to home the better. Note: I'm not looking for a head shop, more like an earthy Target.

Additionally, can anyone suggest some search terms to plug into Google Local -- hippie store isn't coming up with much!

How the gurz can I get a copy of this book?

I've recently discovered a delightfully insane religion, and I want to buy their book. There are a couple of problems, though. The religion is based in Turkey, and from what I can parse on this page, it looks like "The Knowledge Book" isn't available:

As a result of the scanning done, it has been decided that the Knowledge Book is to be written in handwriting in Countries outside Turkey until 18th of February of the World year 2007 (With an ink fountain pen).

It seems that they scanned the book onto the internet, so you're supposed to get together with two friends, call a number in Turkey, and write it out for yourself.

I really want this book. According to a magazine a friend of mine has, put out by this organization, "The Knowledge Book"—in English—is a delicious 1,111 pages long.

I have tried all the usual routes: abebooks, google, and so forth. I e-mailed the religion's founder, V. Bulent Corak, and heard nothing back.

Alternately, what are some other really good crazy religion books? I already know about the usual suspects, and the Urantia book.

Many thanks.

Is Brain Respiration a hoax?

Is Brain Respiration yet another New Age-y hoax, or what? (+) The enthusiasm and anecdotal quality of this article from the Guardian weirded me out. It's not the usual disinterested report you expect in a major publication. I've never heard of Brain Respiration before. And the thought of actually plowing through all the google links makes my brain cry out for oxygen.

Yet, still...I expect the Guardian to vet these things before opening up the gusher. So, dear Mefi community, is there anything to it? Anybody have anything good, bad or indifferent to report about (I cringe at the locution) "Brain Respiration"?
