good websites for part-time jobs in NYC

good websites for part-time jobs in NYC? What are some good websites for part-time jobs (or jobs in general) in NYC?

I'm moving back to NYC (brooklyn) at the end of the month, will be working on a personal project that requires 3-4 days free a week, and am looking for a part-time job to help pay the bills.

I haven't had to look for jobs in a while, so am a bit behind on the latest sites, so to speak.

I'd preferably like to find an office job in a capacity beneficial rather than detrimental to humankind, such as in the non-profit sector (where I was working before), but, ultimately-- any part-time job that helps pay the bills will do.

Idealist
Craigslist
what else?

thanks

I'm a US expat living in Australia and am thinking of moving back to the US. But I have juxtaposed requirements for a settling location that I'm not sure I can meet. Here they are:
1. Need to be within a day's drive of my ageing parents in Las Cruces, NM.
2. Need a place that will support/employ a techie nerd type guy (me)
3. Need a place that has an alternative lifestyle culture that supports traditional midwifery and doulas (my partner)

New Years Eve - Health Symbol?

New Year's Eve is here and in the four hours away it will be 2010. I have no greenery in the house, what should I use instead? Tradition of first footing, greenery was supposed to symbolise health - so what readily alternatives do you suggest?

So far: Lemons, Olive Oil, ???

Things to do with 4 days in San Diego?

Me and a couple of friends are going to San Diego from Dec 30 - Jan
3rd. Any suggestion for what to do? We already know about the Star Bar and that place is totally our speed. Other than that we pretty much don't have any plans. We'd like recommendations for bars along those lines.

Additionally we'd be to know about any indie, industrial, goth, post-punk, elctro or rock shows or club nights (a place where we could hear Wire, Nitzer Ebb, LCD Soundsystem and Siouxsie and the Banshees in one night would be perfect).

As far as museums more "cultural" things I think Google has us covered on those so unless you know of something really out of the way we are good on that front.

We'll be staying in downtown (in the Gaslamp district) so things in that area would be perfect but we aren't opposed to getting on the bus/ train /cab /whatever to check out something that seems interesting or fun.

Finally for Sunday we need a place to see if the Saints completely botch the last three games of the season. We'd like a bar with NFL ticket so we can watch the game. The less obnoxious the better.

Thanks.

Colleges in NYC that are reasonably priced? I'm looking at studying in New York City, I'm 26 and have never stepped foot in a college class room before. I'm moving there no matter what and will be working, but I'd like to start pursuing a bachelors degree on the side.

Anyone have recommendations of good schools, preferably in Manhattan or Brooklyn that aren't super expensive? I'll be probably studying Film History, or literature.

Ice Skating in NYC. Recommendations please? I am looking for an ice skating rink in NYC for a date. I'm trying to find one that is fun and not so crowded and you know...romantic and shit. So there are a few options I know of, Rockefeller Center, Central Park, and Bryant Park. I'm looking for an outdoor rink so Chelsea Piers is out of the question. How about the one at the Museum of Natural History? Is the one in Prospect Park any good? I'm not discounting Brooklyn. (I am a native, therefore surprise surprise, I have not been to any of these places.)

Also, this is important, which one has good hot chocolate nearby?

1G or 3G?

iPhone...first generation used or 3G new, or wait for a while?
A friend might sell me an iPhone 1G for $50. Should I buy that or upgrade? I am eligible to renew my AT&T contract. It doesn't give me the iPhone option, so I would have to go to a store, but that is not an issue here. As I understand, the 1G iPhone's data plan is ten dollars cheaper than the 3G data plan. Over a year that would be $120 in savings, plus the phone being $50 cheaper than the cheapest 3G, adds up to $170 savings over a year. I am a bit cash strapped, but is it worth buying an older used phone for saving that much?

Have you ever been to a Sing-in of Handel's Messiah? I'm looking into attending the National Chorale sing-in event at Lincoln Center (http://www.nationalchorale.org/) and gather that you need sheet music to participate. I love the idea of singing along, but how formal is the audience participation? I'm a huge fan of the music and I enjoy singing, but I can't sight read well, and I'm not familiar with the various choral parts.

Creative ideas for a party

What short, creative performances can guests put on at my party to entertain themselves? I'd like to have a holiday party. But not just another dinner party or a drinking party. I'd like all of my guests to put on little performances - whether that would be a short skit, dance/music, puppet show, parody, magic tricks, telling some jokes, monologue, poetry reading, juggling, sword swallowing - whatever! I just would like everyone to do something entertaining and creative, my expectations are pretty reasonable, I don't expect everyone to prepare and practice like prima ballerinas...

I am always ambivalent about hosting parties - so much stress in organizing and making sure everyone has a good time! And I am especially doubtful about hosting this one. Even though most of my friends/acquaintances are a creative bunch, a lot of my potential guests find my party idea intimidating. They are either shy or have no idea what to do for this "assignment", and hence are unsure whether they will attend at all :(

I'd love some suggestions for this which I can offer to my friends to make them less intimidated and more enthusiastic. Ideally, they would have all or any of the following qualities: creative, suitable for shy people, do not take much time or effort to prepare for.

And what would I do for my part? I would do something similar to Isabella Rosselini's Green Porno "Nothing Porno about it!" as she says. In the series, Rossellini enacts the mating rituals of various insects and other animals (including the dragonfly, spider, bee, praying mantis, squid, snail and housefly) with cardboard cut-outs and foam-rubber sculptures (wikipedia) - the result is very whimsical and reminiscent of an elementary school play in its aesthetics! If anyone is intrigued, you can view all of the episodes on

Metropolitan Museum Filter

Metropolitan Museum of Art filter: Any suggestions for visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art with teenagers? I will be in NYC for a brief trip with my extanded family. Two of my teenage nieces have become interested in Art History. I am going to spend a day with them at the Met.

I have studied art history. I have been to the Met several times, and know it a bit. I know the big highlights of the museum - but what are the really great things to see that people might overlook? Where in the museum are these things?

I am interested in hearing any other info that you would like to share about the musuem. Keep in mind, the goal here is to deepen and further teenage interest in art history.

Any and all thoughts are appreciated. Any good web-sites (the official website for the museum is very good, but anything else).

Where Can I Get a Directory of New York High Tech Companies?

Is there a directory of New York high tech companies? I am applying in the New York city area for a software developer job.

There are a lot of job search websites but I notice that some companies, including some major companies, don't post their jobs on the major job websites.

Ideally, I would like to have a list of all the high tech companies in the New York city so I can sift through them and find their direct websites and apply directly.

Another reason for this is that there are a lot of job recruiters out there who post to the job websites and I really just want to work directly with a company and not through recruiters.

Anybody going through this situation, perhaps even in another city?

Google search gives some results but I haven't seen a comprehensive database out there.

I'll probably be done around 2 or 3, but then would like to get down to Boston by dinnertime (7 or so). Can anyone suggest to me the quickest way to get there?
NYC suggestions?

My husband and I are visiting NYC just after Christmas for a few days. Where are some interesting, non-touristy places we should go? We'll be staying in Brooklyn. I never visited the city, but Shane has been twice. We love coffee shops, thrift/junk stores, book stores and art.

We also love to eat good food (who doesn't?) Any MUST GO places would be appreciated! (not scared of hole-in-the-wall!)

We're looking to run a little off the beaten path. Also, are broadway tickets worth the cost?

Between working a massive amount of overtime in both November and December (including before, during, and after both Christmas and Thanksgiving), driving several hours each way to visit both sets of parents for both holidays, not to mention all the other stresses that come along with the Christmas season, my husband & I are betting on being pretty burnt out by the time the New Years comes around. It's the only holiday we "have" to ourselves, and this year we wanted to do something fun instead of just laying on the couch, watching the ball drop, and then calling our parents at midnight.

We don't have any children, and money isn't really a factor. None of our friends live close enough that we would be able to attend any parties. So, what do you do to celebrate New Year's Eve? Save us from another bland New Year's celebration!

Why am I working so hard at quitting this job?

What are the legal requirements for quitting a job? All parts of this query pertain to the state of New York (and not the city). The question seems strange to me too, but are there any requirements a corporation can place on a person as a condition of delivering the final paycheck?

Or is it an immutable duty of the company to issue the final paycheck on time and in full?

Things that come to my mind include signing forms for 'I won't sue,' or 'I promise not to disclose' (what I've already promised not to disclose on the original nondisclosure agreement i signed when starting) or 'I vow never to contact my formerly fellow employees'. These all seem a little ridiculous to me too, but seem more and more in the realm of possibility due to my current job.

Related, can an exit interview include one's manager, in addition to the 'typical' HR person? (Is there a 'typical' exit interview?) Any suggested responses for irrational insistence that it is perfectly legal for the corporation to insist I sign whatever they want before they will deliver final paycheck? Also, any further suggested preparation for an exit interview about which I've become way too paranoid?

Where is this powder coming from?

What is the name of the technology that produces powder (that verifies authenticity, I suppose) when you bend a drivers license or other ID card? My friend has a New York Drivers License (maybe not the newest one, but still pretty new). If you bend the license, it releases a kind of powder, presumably to verify its authenticity. I'm really curious about the technology (and not because I'm trying to make a fake ID, it is just an interesting technique), and I'm having a hard time googling for more info. Does anyone know what this security technique is called? What other states use it? Where I can find out more?

Motorcycle Helmets in New York

What shop in New York City has the largest range of Motorcycle Accessories, specifically helmets? Currently visiting family in New York from Australia, and really want to pick up a Nolan Motorcycle Helmet this week. Nolan's own site has a pretty poor/non-existent retailer list, and due to the the limited time I am here, I turn to the hive.

I have a car, and can go pretty much anywhere in Long Island/Manhattan, so if anyone knows of a shop that has a huge/wide range of helmets in store, it would be most appreciated! Thanks!

What to do in the Bay Area for New Year's?

San Francisco filter: Early planning for New Year's Eve in San Francisco? Fun things to do that don't revolve around nightclubs/dancing? Here's the deal...my brother and his girlfriend are coming to visit over New Year's Eve. We'd like to go to the city (I live in the East Bay) to do something fun, but not necessarily something really crowded.

They're both science majors, and were really excited at the possibility of going to the California Academy of Sciences Nightlife event. Unfortunately, looks like they're not having the event on New Year's Eve.

So, we're basically looking for something fun and unique that wouldn't necessarily involve a nightclub scene. For instance, they loved Martuni's the last time they were here, but we weren't there on New Year's Eve, so I'm not sure how crowded it would be.

So, ideas for something similar to the Cal Academy nightlife event, or to a place with the Martuni's atmosphere? Not exactly similar, I know, but will hopefully give you an idea of what we're not interested in. Thanks!

What are your lesser-known or weird ways of looking for new music?

What are your lesser-known or weird ways of looking for new music? Besides friends' recommendations, mix tapes, last.fm, review sites/blogs, TV/film song features, and late night talk show musical guests, what are some of your lesser-known or weird ways of searching for new music that others may not know about?

A few of mine:

- Sometimes I search for "recent favourite band + cover" on Youtube and sort them by views to find other new artists who very few people know. Those artists will usually have some of their own original songs available

- Search by lyrics to look for other bands/artists who have written similar words/lines/phrases, example

- Talk to touring bands after their shows and ask some of the band members what they're listening to on the road
How should I stay warm this winter?

Which is more efficient/economical to run: a baseboard heater or an oil-filled radiator-type space heater? I'm a Californian getting ready for my first winter in Massachusetts. My apartment has electric baseboard heaters. I have never had those before, and I'm worried my bill is going to be HUGE once it gets cold. It doesn't help that whenever I tell someone those are the heaters I have they dramatically wince and hiss through their teeth. Also, one of my neighbors said her bill was several hundred dollars a month last winter. I'm thinking an oil-filled radiator might be sufficient and a lot less expensive to run.

Bonus question: I have two cats, and would love to have a safer heating source to leave on if I'm going to be out for several hours or overnight. A different neighbor, who also has cats, says she leaves her heaters on when she's not home, but that seems really unsafe to me. Are baseboard heaters safe, or are the other ones safer?

Here are the details:
My living room is basically one big room with a doorway to the kitchen on one end. The living room and kitchen each have drafty old windows (both of which I have covered with that lovely plastic sheeting stuff, which has already helped a lot). There is a front door and a back door that both open up to unheated stairwells. I bought weatherstripping for the doors but haven't installed it yet. My apartment is on the top/second floor, with apartments below and on either side. The building was built in the 70s. The windows and heaters seem to date from then too.

There is one long baseboard heater underneath the window. It's controlled by a dial thermostat on the opposite wall near the kitchen and front door. I spend most of my time at my desk or on the couch, which are near one end of the heater, in the opposite corner from the thermostat. It seems like I could get a space heater to warm the corner where the cats and I spend the most time, and avoid having the baseboard heater running and heating the whole room. I'm an impoverished grad student, and am worried about having to pay huge chunks of my stipend to WMECO. Would it be less expensive to run the space heater, and would that be enough to keep me and the cats warm?

I used to live in a drafty old house in Portland, where the wind ripped the plastic sheets right off the windows and we kept the thermostat at 60, so I know the drill about bundling up indoors and am generally a hot person anyway, but I have never been through a New England winter and I don't know if my plan is realistic or not. Can anyone with experience chime in?
