We're going to New Zealand in November. I want a relaxing, romantic honeymoon, eating delicious foods in beautiful places. My partner wants to hike for hours, go canyon-ing, etc. Itinerary help please. [more inside]
TL;DR: Current job: The good: relaxing, fancy title, nice perks/benefits, flexibility, easy schedule The bad: boring, frustrating, mundane, not in a field I love, full of micromanagers, no room for growth, no intellectual challenge A different job: The good: a field I think I want to be in, intellectually challenging, meaningful, room for growth The bad: loss of perks/benefits, potential loss of schedule flexibility, not easy, stressful, lots of unknowns Which would you chose? I am in the market for a new desktop, and would like an iMac. Wondering if there are other options (read more inside if interested). [more inside]
My wife and I are interested in getting a dog. We sort of thought of it as something we'd ease into, especially since we had heard that adoption can take a little bit of time. We stopped by a nearby animal rescue this weekend just to see what was involved, and met a very sweet, gentle 7-year-old pugle. We were very surprised to be told that the rescue does same-day adoption, and we could potentially take her home that day. I balked a little bit because our apartment isn't really set up for a dog, but we're both first time dog owners, so don't really know what that even means. [more inside]
Hi all! Around 6 months ago, I took on a contracting/freelance (they use the terms interchangeably) position at a large company. Sadly, they have no intention on making the position permanent for any of the contractors in our department; this is in addition to me feeling the company isn't the right fit for me. As a result, I've started applying to other jobs. It's going surprisingly well and I've nailed down two interviews thus far... the problem, you may ask? How the heck do I get time away from my existing job? [more inside]
The Internet appears to have swallowed an almost ten-year old commercial from the NYTimes about its (then new) Weekender subscription service, which included the famous "Saturdays, the word alone makes me happy" comment. It was parodied here by the 92Y Tribeca (RIP) and was then revised by the NY Times. I am, however, looking for the original ad that ran in 2006 (according to this Time article). Was even able to locate the abridged version of the commercial, but can't find the original. MeFi's can you help me save this from the internet rabbit hole?
For a specific project at work, we will require an iPad in the near future (say, next week or two). We are only interested in new merchandise (NOT refurbished or used). I was tasked with exploring the best prices on iPads. We are not constrained to any specific vendors, but obviously need a reputable one. I thought the prices of Apple products were essentially uniform across retailers -- but are there deals to be had on new iPads? If so, how do I find them? [more inside]

Picked this up a few years ago at an abandoned pawn place in New Mexico. Love it dearly (although it does need a polish), but I have no idea where it might be from (definitely American, perhaps government?) or what the design might signify. And, hey, I wear it all the time, so I'd like to know!
I have a toothache and need someone to look at it in New York City. No insurance. [more inside]

Here's the thing: I am a young adult who for the majority of his life has been intellectualising because he is fascinated by what he learns. However more and more I have been wishing I had a creative outlet, artistic or otherwise. [more inside]
A little while back I stumbled upon a detective novel (Losers Live Longer) that takes place in 2009 NYC and utilizes actual city streets, restaurants, bars, etc. The writing was pretty average, but the book kept me constantly aware of the protagonist's location (oftentimes cross-streets). The real-world geography of areas I knew well really sucked me into the world and engaged me on another level than the narrative alone. Are there any other good detective or mystery novels that use post-2000s (or, better yet, post-2010) New York accurately? [more inside]
I'm open to all suggestions on this. I started a new job in January, one that requires me to write press releases, take photos, etc. Today, the boss, who is not my biggest fan, announced to our little group that whoever is assigned to take photos will also have to shoot video at the same event, [more inside]

I just moved back home to New York from California. I renewed my NY state drivers license online and received it in the mail today. However, it expires in 1 year on my birthday. Why does it expire so soon? I don't get it. My family members license don't expire for another 4+ years.
Asking for a dear friend who lost some beloved footwear over the course of a move: Where in New York City do you go to get a nice pair of cowboy boots?
I saw that Facebook has created an updated version of the News Feed (see it at Facebook.com/newsfeed) that has larger pictures and less text. I really liked it, so I signed up for the waiting list. A month has passed and still no sign of the new design. Anyone know when the public release will be?
I am visiting NZ (South Island only, unfortunately) for about a week's holiday, starting mid-March (only 10 more sleeps to go, as they say). I'm flying in and out of Queenstown. What places should I visit? What should I see? What should I do? What car rental service is good? Any recommended places to stay? [more inside]

Trying to remember a jazz musician. He went commercial way back in 60's I think. He played trumpet I think. One tune I recall was "Elephant Walk" He was a very big man. He was on TV for quite a while. Can anyone remember this?
I know this sounds weird, but I've been sort of struggling with this idea for awhile now. When we're younger we do things a certain way, like the food we eat, the music we listen to, the traditions we have, they all come from our parents. But when you get older, you grow out of some of those things and into other things. I know this, but sometimes I'll be reading a health food article (for example) and I'll think something like, "doesn't the author feel weird about not eating the foods she ate when she was younger?" Because I imagine she grew up on mash potatoes and meatloaf, not quinoa salad and red snapper. I mean I know that eating healthy is ideal, but it just makes me uncomfortable on some deep level to see people diverting from what they must've done when they were kids. I guess I mean when they're trying new things. I don't know why it should bother me so much though, especially when I am trying to adopt a healthy lifestyle myself? [more inside]
Within the past 4 years, I read an article in the New Yorker written by an older writer who had recently lost his younger wife. Where can I find this? [more inside]

I just moved to a big city after graduating college in August. I'm not sure exactly what I want to do, and I'm not the most ambitious or confident person, to say the least. I have a somewhat untreated case of ADD, but I don't take my meds anymore; I'm finding coffee and exercise are much better. Anyways, I have gotten two different pieces of negative feedback on my phone behavior with people who had the potential to give me a job; they both basically said I sounded unenthusiastic. What is a good way to remedy this? [more inside]
