I was let go from my job last week - it was kind of a surprise, but I'm bouncing back and I was looking to leave the company anyway, so I'm not too broken up about that. I am not thrilled about the prospect of job hunting while unemployed (would have preferred to have landed a new job first) and am trying to get a handle on my next steps. I have some Networking 101-type questions that I need help with, as well as some questions about how best to frame what happened at the last job to recruiters/prospective new leads/interviewers, and how to best avoid ever being in this same situation ever again. Looking for a community/forum where I can learn more about networking, code, security, and OS-independent CS topics
I'm looking for a forum where I can ask questions about networking, security, coding, operating systems, web design, etc. There are many of these out there, but I'd like to find a single community which covers all these topics more or less equally (so it isn't a Linux forum with a small section on BSD, or a coding forum with a small section on networking). I'd like it to be the sort of forum where users stay around for several years as they learn and contribute at different levels, with high literacy and education-to-spam levels. Could I have your recommendations please?

I am learning in college about setting up and configuring Slackware Linux and I am looking for a newbie friendly book. Areas covered includes FTP, telnet, Samba, NFS, Email, port mappers/scanners. While there are certainly many books out there, Slackware appears to be a fair bit different from most other debian and redhat based distros so I am not sure about a) what would be a good book and b) a book that is relevant for Slackware Linux. Could anyone suggest an excellent book suitable for Slackware and covering these networking areas in newbie friendly terms. Many thanks!

I am computer competent and networking stupid. I have a pretty simple setup in mind, but I'm not sure how to do it. I have searched around and I found several guides and discussions related to my goal but after trying unsuccessfully to get this thing going on my machines I decided someone here could probably offer some good advice. I want to have file sharing capabilities between my desktop and my netbook. No printer or internet connection sharing or anything else needed--just file sharing. I have a desktop running Windows 7. It has no wireless card. I have an Asus Eee PC netbook running XP. Both connect through the internet through an Asus RT-N12 router. The desktop wired and the netbook wirelessly. What is the simplest way to do file sharing between these two computers with this setup? Even just telling me the type of setup I need to use or a poke in the right direction would be helpful. ThankS!
I have had a rash of contacts in the last few days asking about a specific job at my company. I sort of know the hiring manager, but not well enough to just send every random person his way.
