I am learning in college about setting up and configuring Slackware Linux and I am looking for a newbie friendly book. Areas covered includes FTP, telnet, Samba, NFS, Email, port mappers/scanners. While there are certainly many books out there, Slackware appears to be a fair bit different from most other debian and redhat based distros so I am not sure about a) what would be a good book and b) a book that is relevant for Slackware Linux.
Could anyone suggest an excellent book suitable for Slackware and covering these networking areas in newbie friendly terms.

My phone connects to my home wifi network but won't load webpages/get internet. How can I fix this? Also, can anyone confirm that this won't be a hardware issue? There's a short window in which I could possibly exchange the phone, but I'd rather not if it's not a flaw in the phone. [more inside]

Looking for a network building/maintaining tool. Is there some sort of app (mac or web based) that will allow me to track how long it has been since talking to someone? Ideally I'd like to see one page with a horizontal bar graph with the number of days since last contact on the x-axis. So as the time between talking grows, the bar expands outwards. [more inside]

How did you build up your friends and connections when you moved to a new city? Did you do it with a career, wife, and kids? My family will be moving to Austin in about 6 months. We don't have any connections there as far as friends, doctors, accountants, dentists, etc. I know certain people that have a knack for building up their connections very quickly in a new environment. I am computer competent and networking stupid. I have a pretty simple setup in mind, but I'm not sure how to do it. I have searched around and I found several guides and discussions related to my goal but after trying unsuccessfully to get this thing going on my machines I decided someone here could probably offer some good advice.
I want to have file sharing capabilities between my desktop and my netbook. No printer or internet connection sharing or anything else needed--just file sharing.
I have a desktop running Windows 7. It has no wireless card.
I have an Asus Eee PC netbook running XP.
Both connect through the internet through an Asus RT-N12 router. The desktop wired and the netbook wirelessly.
What is the simplest way to do file sharing between these two computers with this setup? Even just telling me the type of setup I need to use or a poke in the right direction would be helpful. ThankS!

I have a Linksys WCG200 cable modem/wireless router combo device. It sucks at wireless (and extensive Googling has indicated that's unfixable), but it's OK at everything else. Can I pick up a $30 wireless router, plug that into the device I have now, and use that without any loss of quality? Would I need any other devices? Would it just be easier to get a new stand-alone cable modem as well?

I am looking to do a project on the effects of latency on cloud computing, specifically latency impacting on Amazon EC2 virtual machines and I am trying to get my head around it. EC2 is an Infrastructure As A Service cloud product. Unfortunately, I do not have much experience with it.
I haven't found alot on the internet on this area; has anyone seen any information on this subject?
Could anyone make suggestions about appropriate ways to do latency benchmarking in this area.
What kind of things ought I be looking to include in any benchmark tests.
How exactly do others go about measuring latency for Amazon EC2. Are there any software tools out there which will help.
