I've read some of the previously posted questions on this (not to mention Googling) and still have not read a 100% clear answer. I know that using an extender/repeater slashes bandwidth. But if I use a wireless bridge, instead, will throughput be higher? [more inside]

I am trying to get a handle on the basic facts about software-defined networking/software-defined internet exchange. Every article I find on the internet seems choked with stupefying jargon. What I want to know: What even is SDN/SDX? How does it work? Why would you want it?

I received an email from $bignamecompany on LinkedIn. They want me to interview for a position. For a variety of reasons, I am not interested in switching jobs right now. I would like to get more information about the position at the company and establish a relationship with the HR person for the future, however. How do I do this? [more inside]

I'd like to talk to someone in Newport, Oregon, about business and employment. We've never met, I'd be reaching out to him straight out of the blue. How can I do this without looking like a weirdo? [more inside]
I have a problem with remembering people's names. I've read previous posts on the topic and generally I can smilingly apologise and say, "Hey, I'm sorry but I am terrible with names." But my bigger problem is that I meet people in many contexts that don't overlap and all require various levels of professionalism. I don't mind apologising for forgetting their name, but to then add, "...and how do we know each other?" is veering into rudeness. Suggestions?
I'm looking for a story (short novel, perhaps?) I read online probably 5-10 years ago, about a team that invents network gear so good, it happens to pick up packets from the future. Other plot points inside. [more inside]

My Tivo frequently loses connection to the network, which creates substantial problems. Since there are a lot of expensive wires and devices that could be the cause of the issue, it's not cost effective to start replacing components until the issue is fixed. Is there a better way to pinpoint the source of a problem on a home network? [more inside]
What network attached storage should I use? This will be used as a central backup for all three computers on the network, it should stream media to my xbox, and it should be easy to setup a secondary backup of the NAS to another external drive or cloud service. [more inside]

I share an internet connection with the other tenants in my small apartment building. My neighbors are nice folks, but I'd like a little more technological distance between us. I'd like to keep my computers on a private wireless network and have the router for that network connect to the shared router for internet access. Is this possible? [more inside]

A few weeks ago i ran into an acquaintance and mentioned that I was looking for a new job. For career search and professional networking, my goal is to have two business card sets for two separate functions: (A) Personal/professional networking, which I think should be clean in design and potentially easy for business card scanners to scan, and (B) 1 or 2 quirky styles for packaging with hard copy resumes, stationery, after in-person interviews, and possibly at geek-oriented events, which I think should more whimsical and/or notable. I want your opinions and/or additional ideas if you think I'm off-base or should consider other approaches. [more inside]

A few of my former colleagues would be very good people to network with. The only problem is that there a few of them I haven't spoken to in years (as in, more than ten years in one case). Is there a way to get in touch with people via a networking email that won't make me seem like a stalker or a blatant opportunist? [more inside]

Teach me how to make the most of this opportunity to network, while avoiding specific pitfalls like drooling on myself or saying dumb nervous things. Difficulty level: I don't currently work in the field, so people are going to be less interested in networking with me than I am with them (unless they are actively seeking a mentee, or open to it). I left this medical supply company last November due to multiple employees leaving, declining accounts, and the inability to be consistently compliant with Medicare standards. My previous supervisor was laid off, and he ended up working for a university medical center that is ranked top 10 in the U.S. While I was working at the medical supply company, we would keep in touch and he encouraged me to look for a better gig. Doing phone support (no physical access) Windows 7 network... 4 computers... Let's call them Laptop, Front, Data1, Data2. The original call was for a computer (Front) that couldn't see the local network or the internet. After playing around with it, having them replug wifi adapter, loading the "Netgear Genie" software and doing ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew, I got it so that the computer could see the internet and 3 out of 4 computers on the local network/workgroup. Remembering who someone is has been a roadblock to successful networking in the past – but in my new job, I have more people to remember than ever. I’d like to know what you, as someone who also has trouble remembering names and faces, has done to keep track of a large network. I am not looking for mnemonic tricks to remember one or several specific names. I’m hoping more for something like “Everyone I meet goes in my electronic rolodex that I update with X information after each meeting.” [more inside]

I just had a uverse tech over because my tv signal kept getting lost. Well he replaced the modem but, he said the problem might be my gigabit switch? I have a 3 consoles and a fire tv connected to it and don't want to go wireless when my rg is right next to the tv. All my tv clients are connected directly to the modem. Does this sound feasible? Should I take off the ps3 and see if it helps at all? Should I wait for repeat of problem before I do anything? I wasn't having any internet problems just tv problems

In a nutshell my small family business has comcast as a isp and a 3d party voip provider. Comcast as a business grade isp is not good in my neck of the woods (Chicago). My research ( google) informed me that I could use a Sonicwall tz215 and a 2nd isp as a fallback in case (ie: when) comcast craps out. can I use the fully configured Cisco router (static ip's for the phones and computers and VoIP stuff ) in line from the Sonicwall. So what I'm thinking is isp/isp-->Sonicwall -->Cisco router -->dumb switch?? Can this be done --if so how?

Currently bridging from main house to guest house with a router set up in the guest house acting as both wireless bridge and AP, but the connection is a little wonky. It's only about 100 ft between the two houses, but I guess the walls are attenuating the signal too much. Running ethernet cable would solve the issue, but would involve holes in the houses, which I'd like to avoid (but will consider if necessary). Powerline networking didn't work. Any thoughts? Thanks! I have att uverse internet and they gave me a 2 15 feet cat 5e cables terminated with rj11 ends that plug into my modem. I'm thinking of buying a crap ton of these and going to town. My modem is in the corner 1 foot away from the jack if that. Is that a solid plan?

My computer router/hub/switch/modem has LEDs has flicker as network traffic streams though each port. And I know that LEDs can switch on/off faster than the human eye can perceive. So do these LEDs actually light up for each '1' or '0' that's passing through it and if so, can somebody with the right technology snoop on my network traffic by observing the LEDs on my kit?

The last time I went job searching was through answering ads on Monster. Everything was fairly straightforward. I would send my resume, go on an interview, get an offer or not. Now the advice is to network, use LinkedIn, find a recruiter, and figure out how to optimize keywords to defeat bot filtering while registering online. I’ve tried this without any success. Is there a better way to beat the system? Someone break this down for me. What actually works? [more inside]
