Why join proffesional societies or associations as a student?

I have been a member of a few professional societies as a student member. Should I continue with them? How can I better take advantage of them if I do? I am a student member of The American Psychological Association Division 52: International Psychology and The APA div 14: The Society for Industrial Organizational Psychology. They cost around $25 each annually but I don't feel I am taking advantage of them. I don't attend conferences due to the expense so I miss some of the networking benefits. There are usually forums for communication but the activity levels are fairly low. I have gotten access to some books and tons of articles and that's cool. Other than this, is it really worthwhile for me to be a member? If so, how can I better participate as an essentially online only member?

Help me make my story short and sweet, for those who might hear it.

I don't have a career counselor (and there aren't any in these parts) or anyone to turn to for this, so I'm seeking help on the green. Re-acclimating to life at home, career path indecision / lack of direction, lack of opportunities and illness and death in the family have left their mark on my recent professional and life history, and I want to be able to summarize it all to a prospective employer / networking contact without sounding like an indecisive drama queen. In search of beautiful network diagrams

I am looking for examples of beautiful or unusual, yet effective, computer network diagrams - the more complex and extensive the networks, the better. Similarly, I'd like to find tutorials and how-to's on making same - preferably avoiding Visio/OmniGraffle as much as possible (most of the people I work with just want to swap .pdfs or Power Point presentations when it comes to delivering design documents, anyhow.) I deal with very intricate and large networks, and it's always a struggle to present them visually to various project stakeholders. I'd like to catch their attention with something striking that will help them actually understand what's going on.

Bridged DSL Modem Still Broadcasting SSID cause problems?

I have att dsl at my house. I bridged the modem and setup a third party router and all is fine. Only problem I can see is that the ssid listed on the side of the modem and is still being broadcast. The wireless light on the front of the modem is off so I don't see why. I tried connecting to the ssid with supplied password and it doesn't do anything so I'm assuming it's inactive. Could having an ssid that is unusable cause problems with interference or something? It's kinda driving me crazy.

IP Phone twisted pair usage versus PC 10/100

Rookie question perhaps... What more wires in a CAT5 cable other than TX+ TX- RX+ RX- does a standard IP phone use? I ask because I had one cable run where the PC had 100% connectivity, but when I plugged in an IP phone to the same run, it would not receive an IP (PC was DHCP as well but it shouldn't matter) and resolve to the network. I finally re-punched the wall plate and patch panel and it worked like a charm. I have been combing the web for an answer on this, and the best I found that the phone may require additional wires in the cable if it is PoE, which this particular run is not Powered. Head scratcher for me...maybe someone out there has an answer! Thank you :)

Any way to remotely reboot a Mac that is NOT connected to the Internet?

I am trying to access my home Mac remotely from the office (I use RealVNC). Unfortunately, there was an Internet outage, which is restored, but the Mac is no longer connected to the Internet. It is however connected to the router, which is accessible from the Internet. AFAIK the only way I can get the Mac reconnected is to reboot it. Is there any way I can reboot the Mac via the router? Or is there some other way to restore the Internet connection to the Mac remotely? I am pretty ignorant on these matters. Thanks for your help.

DNS vs. DDNS?

I recently sent my father (who lives in the Middle East) a Roku as a gift. Thing is, Rokus don't have any advanced networking options and we need to change his DNS in order to watch the programming he desires. The shitty modem/router that his ISP provides does not allow for changes to the DNS. It does, however, allow you to put in DDNS settings (screen shot here). Would altering the DDNS settings override the DNS settings in the router? While changing ones DNS to appear like they're in the US is easy, I have no idea what, if anything, should go in the boxes on the DDNS page of his router. Thanks.

How to move a computer onto a switch and keep the IP address?

I have a Mac Pro set to DHCP manual assign and a certain IP address that cannot change. I also have a printer plugged into a certain network jack; IP address less important. I am moving the physical location of the Mac Pro near this printer and the printer's network jack is the only one available. I'll have to plug both of these machines into the same network jack via switch/router. What switch/router is the right one to buy in 2013 (bonus if I can find it at Best Buy) and what the right way to set this up so the Mac Pro is still reachable at the same IP address on the network?
