After less than six months in my new job (and on the advice of my boss), I'm looking for another one. I plan to go into major networking mode, and I need a good way to explain why I'm looking for a job after I just started one. Hope me? [more inside]
I could really use some tips on networking and well, not panicking. Difficulty: I'm pretty strongly introverted and have some social anxiety as well, although I can fake it for a few hours if I have enough energy. I'm a senior PhD student who is expected to be better at this than I am. [more inside]
Pretty basic: my partner and I are relocating from the East Coast to Los Angeles in July; I am hoping to find a job (or jobs) in one of LA's many fascinating cultural institutions. Primarily looking for positions in research, outreach, or education. I am looking for any suggestions as to listserves, forums, job posting boards, or other places where I can start looking for posted positions, as well as any local groups like the EMPs that I might be able to join once there. A college classmate who I didn't know well/at all is a recruiter at a company with an open position I'd like to apply for. What's the best way to approach this? [more inside]
I was contacted about a job with a company by a HR recruiter (not from that company) on LinkedIn. I was aware of this job from the company’s website and also I have a friend who is working at that company in a peer position. That friend said he spoke to his boss, and his boss said I should apply for the job via the company's website, so I did. Would there be any benefit following up with the HR recruiter from LinkedIn anyway? [more inside]
I am moving to a new city for personal reasons and I need to find a job. This weekend I will be in the new city and will go to the pub where my school's local alumni club for that city is meeting. I'd like to make a good impression on the people that I meet, and, in doing so, to productively advance my job search. The problem? I don't know what I want to do. How do I make a good first impression without having a direction? [more inside]
Help me brainstorm some "thoughtful questions" to ask at a law school networking event. Difficulty: it starts in 3 hours. [more inside]
A division of a very large company does exactly what I'd like to be doing with my career. I'm currently retraining in a way that aligns me more closely with what they do. In the past, I've asked individual practitioners or heads of small companies in my (previous) field out for coffee to ask them for advice and to see whether they might have any opportunities for which I could be a good fit, but I don't know how to do this with a large company. Help! [more inside]
I recently applied for an internship at X Company. Today I found out (or, rather, suddenly remembered from a conversation a couple months ago) that someone I know actually works at X, in the specific team to which I submitted the application. Is there any way I can sort of ~casually~ (or not) bring this to their attention? Would it even make a difference? [more inside]

I was let go from my job last week - it was kind of a surprise, but I'm bouncing back and I was looking to leave the company anyway, so I'm not too broken up about that. I am not thrilled about the prospect of job hunting while unemployed (would have preferred to have landed a new job first) and am trying to get a handle on my next steps. I have some Networking 101-type questions that I need help with, as well as some questions about how best to frame what happened at the last job to recruiters/prospective new leads/interviewers, and how to best avoid ever being in this same situation ever again. I'm currently job searching and aside from getting in touch with close contacts and recent colleagues I'm having trouble with the whole idea of contacting people that I haven't spoken to in years when it's obvious my ulterior motive is networking. I was recently passed over for an interview for a great job because of (I strongly believe) my lack of references (which the ad requested, but I submitted without anyway because my other qualifications were strong). I don’t have any references. Not professional. Not personal. I’m dependable (to a fault!), hardworking, and stable (years-long resume gap notwithstanding), but I have no way of proving this. I suffered from crippling depression and anxiety for years... [more inside]

I'm employed, but looking for a new job. I'd like to apply for a job with a cool company, but my current company has a content partnership with them. Someone I work closely with manages this business relationship, and I fear it might get back to him somehow if I were to apply. Can I discreetly apply for this position without risking anyone at my current job finding out?
