My router (I think) keeps getting in the way of me and my internet! When I click on links, the browser will instead ask me to log into my router—the address bar reads http://192.168.1.254/testRouter?clear.

What type of router typically has a gateway of 10.1.9.1, I'm used to seeing the typical router use 192.168.*.* but I'm trying to figure out what routers the local apartment unit is using to run their wireless.

Are there any inexpensive home routers with support for traffic shaping? I'm willing to load third-party firmware as long as it's stable and cheap.

I am taking a brain-painful networking class (hint: it's all about the
routers, baby!) and the studying is intense. It's hard, but I'm holding my own. I see questions here on AskMe that bring really cool answers from lots of folks, with a lot of repeat answerers, which leads me to ask, How Did You Learn What You Know About Computers/the Internet? Was it in school? Did you apprentice with someone who had m4d sk1lz? Did you teach yourself? Other?

StupidRouterFilter: Suppose you have a DSL modem with a computer running XP coming out of it, with a printer attached. Two other machines coming out of the DSL modem can of course see the printer just fine. However, there is also a router coming out of the modem (don't ask), and none of the machines coming out of the router can see the printer. Is there any way to make them able to use that printer?

I'm helping some friends of mine set up a small house network with a cable router. They have two PC's running XP and an Imac with 96MB RAM, OS 8.1.
I do not know much at all about Macintosh computers, and I couldn't find any info regarding the ability to see files on the network, cross platform. I basically want to have access to the music files on one of the PCs from the Imac.
