Cheapest way to stream audio over a wired LAN?

I'd like to use the LAN at work to push music out to remote speakers throughout the building. The speakers would be wired into the LAN, and the music would be streamed from a single PC running iTunes (or something similar -- it doesn't have to be iTunes itself). [more inside]

it seems the problem is my lifelong desire to never be "annoying".

small business networking

Does there exist any online boards, websites, that cater to businesses and/or investors looking to connect? In other words, maybe someone is a owns a small home renovation business and is looking for investors. Or restaurants, plumbers, etc. Basically a place for networking. I have looked on CL and have not seen a category that fits this description, and I am not referring to something like Kickstarter. Any ideas?

IP Phone twisted pair usage versus PC 10/100

Rookie question perhaps... What more wires in a CAT5 cable other than TX+ TX- RX+ RX- does a standard IP phone use? I ask because I had one cable run where the PC had 100% connectivity, but when I plugged in an IP phone to the same run, it would not receive an IP (PC was DHCP as well but it shouldn't matter) and resolve to the network. I finally re-punched the wall plate and patch panel and it worked like a charm. I have been combing the web for an answer on this, and the best I found that the phone may require additional wires in the cable if it is PoE, which this particular run is not Powered. Head scratcher for me...maybe someone out there has an answer! Thank you :)

How to say thanks

I had a job interview on Friday for a position I'm very excited about. I got the interview after speaking to a woman from this company at a job fair, who passed along my resume and promised to put in a good word for me since my advisor (who knows her professionally) spoke to her and vouched for me after I mentioned meeting her at the fair. I want to send her a thank you email but I could use some assistance on the details. [more inside]

How to move a computer onto a switch and keep the IP address?

I have a Mac Pro set to DHCP manual assign and a certain IP address that cannot change. I also have a printer plugged into a certain network jack; IP address less important. I am moving the physical location of the Mac Pro near this printer and the printer's network jack is the only one available. I'll have to plug both of these machines into the same network jack via switch/router. What switch/router is the right one to buy in 2013 (bonus if I can find it at Best Buy) and what the right way to set this up so the Mac Pro is still reachable at the same IP address on the network?

Self-promotion during self-doubt - the writing edition

I started freelance writing recently and have met a couple of people who are dream contacts -- a literary agent who's reached out to me for book ideas, and an editor who offered to have lunch with me to see what else I might contribute to their publication. The problem is, I'm very new to this and, though thrilled to be able to write for an audience, am really struggling between courageous ambition and compulsive self-effacement. I know creative producers go through this all the time. However, my question is: how do I take advantage of these opportunities ASAP in spite of it? [more inside]

Networking Advise

Networking Etiquette. I am starting out on a new job search, and I was hoping to learn some pointers in networking etiquette. I have recently received a graduate degree in Public Relations/Communications. My main contacts are people in my program and professors. I am interested in what is the proper manner to introduce myself to people outside of my current circle with the ultimate aim of landing a job in this field. I appreciate any advise you may have. How to convey enthusiasm on the job hunt?

I just moved to a big city after graduating college in August. I'm not sure exactly what I want to do, and I'm not the most ambitious or confident person, to say the least. I have a somewhat untreated case of ADD, but I don't take my meds anymore; I'm finding coffee and exercise are much better. Anyways, I have gotten two different pieces of negative feedback on my phone behavior with people who had the potential to give me a job; they both basically said I sounded unenthusiastic. What is a good way to remedy this? [more inside]

Want to be a network admin. How to gain credibility so I can work with the expensive stuff?

I finally got an entry-level IT job. Now I have time to be more picky about choosing the next one. I'm interested in becoming a network engineer, but there seems to be a massive gap between being trusted to work with low-end managed switches and being trusted to work with McMansion-priced gateway routers. How do/did network engineers bridge that gap? What are the in-between career steps that could get me to a sufficiently high level of proficiency and trust to do high-end networking work? How to decline drinking for networking repeatedly while not appearing uptight.
