Streaming video around the house

I ripped a bunch of my DVDs to my Mac so that I could put the cases in storage. Currently, the files sit on my hard drive on my Mac Pro, and when I want to watch something, I copy the relevant file to a USB stick and walk it upstairs to the TV, where the Blu Ray player has a USB input. Is there an easier way to get these files onto my TV (and ideally, iPads/iPhones) than walking the file around the house? We're an all-Mac household. [more inside]

Are any computer or IT certifications worth pursing?

I'm in the weird position of being halfway through a psych/programming/IT degree meant to train me as a user interface expert. I'm taking a year off to work. I want to learn more about networks, networking, and network security. I want to learn more about computer security in general, best practices to follow. I want to eventually get a non-glamorous job in tech support or similar to pay the bills until I work my way up. Are any of the current computer/tech/IT certifications worth pursuing? [more inside]

Fastest VNC setup? Concurrent RDP sessions in Windows 8 Pro?

I just purchased an underpowered computer to experiment further with remote desktops. Wifi for Dummies, or I Have a Little Netbook

I have a small netbook (Samsung NC10), running Windows XP, that I very much like for travel. But in some places, it doesn't connect to the internet over wifi. I've never tried to figure out why, or fix it: it's so far always been somewhere I could either skip being connected for a few days or plug directly into a router. But for an upcoming trip I'd like some help with a better plan and some tools and resources. [more inside]

network throughput and latency monitoring on cloud server

What is best approach for measuring cloud network latency?

I would like to know what is the best approach for measuring a cloud provider's network latency and jitter e.g. Amazon EC2. While a single ping on the command line can achieve a round trip latency snapshot for that one moment, I was looking for something more comprehensive and thorough. Are there any software tools out there that are particularly recommended and hopefully easy to use for measuring at intervals, network latency & jitter, preferably in Windows? Is round trip latency or end to end latency the best metric to consider? Ping provides roundtrip although if the packet came back the same route it came, then end to end could be found by dividing by 2. Latency and jitter increases in proportion to server load. How could I ramp up server load to let's say a specified percentage? Many thanks!

Recommend a newbie friendly book for linux networking

I am learning in college about setting up and configuring Slackware Linux and I am looking for a newbie friendly book. Areas covered includes FTP, telnet, Samba, NFS, Email, port mappers/scanners. While there are certainly many books out there, Slackware appears to be a fair bit different from most other debian and redhat based distros so I am not sure about a) what would be a good book and b) a book that is relevant for Slackware Linux. Could anyone suggest an excellent book suitable for Slackware and covering these networking areas in newbie friendly terms. Many thanks!

Win7 to XP file sharing setup advice needed

I am computer competent and networking stupid. I have a pretty simple setup in mind, but I'm not sure how to do it. I have searched around and I found several guides and discussions related to my goal but after trying unsuccessfully to get this thing going on my machines I decided someone here could probably offer some good advice. I want to have file sharing capabilities between my desktop and my netbook. No printer or internet connection sharing or anything else needed--just file sharing. I have a desktop running Windows 7. It has no wireless card. I have an Asus Eee PC netbook running XP. Both connect through the internet through an Asus RT-N12 router. The desktop wired and the netbook wirelessly. What is the simplest way to do file sharing between these two computers with this setup? Even just telling me the type of setup I need to use or a poke in the right direction would be helpful. ThankS!

How can I benchmark and measure cloud computing latency?

I am looking to do a project on the effects of latency on cloud computing, specifically latency impacting on Amazon EC2 virtual machines and I am trying to get my head around it. EC2 is an Infrastructure As A Service cloud product. Unfortunately, I do not have much experience with it. I haven't found alot on the internet on this area; has anyone seen any information on this subject? Could anyone make suggestions about appropriate ways to do latency benchmarking in this area. What kind of things ought I be looking to include in any benchmark tests. How exactly do others go about measuring latency for Amazon EC2. Are there any software tools out there which will help.
