I would like some advice. I would like to send test data at intervals from a client to a cloud server and measure the time taken for it to arrive at the server. At the same time, pinging the cloud server at intervals and measuring the roundtrip latency. [more inside]
I would like to know what is the best approach for measuring a cloud provider's network latency and jitter e.g. Amazon EC2. While a single ping on the command line can achieve a round trip latency snapshot for that one moment, I was looking for something more comprehensive and thorough. Are there any software tools out there that are particularly recommended and hopefully easy to use for measuring at intervals, network latency & jitter, preferably in Windows? Is round trip latency or end to end latency the best metric to consider? Ping provides roundtrip although if the packet came back the same route it came, then end to end could be found by dividing by 2. Latency and jitter increases in proportion to server load. How could I ramp up server load to let's say a specified percentage? Many thanks!

The canonical advice for finding work is "network". I have a network: people who ask me technical questions all the time. Yet none has sent me a single reference to (engineering) work. I've gotten fed up with answering their questions, when they know I am looking and yet they produce squat in the way of "so-and-so is looking for someone who can do what you do." So what do I do? I've replaced an aging iMac with 3 external drives hanging off of it with a Macbook Pro with the same 3 external drives hanging off of it. The setup also includes a cable modem and a Time Capsule. Right now the drives are in daisychained Firewire mode. I'm looking for a way to connect the drives to my wifi network so I can eliminate the need to plug the first drive into the laptop? Staying with Firewire would be nice, but it's not a deal breaker.

I am learning in college about setting up and configuring Slackware Linux and I am looking for a newbie friendly book. Areas covered includes FTP, telnet, Samba, NFS, Email, port mappers/scanners. While there are certainly many books out there, Slackware appears to be a fair bit different from most other debian and redhat based distros so I am not sure about a) what would be a good book and b) a book that is relevant for Slackware Linux. Could anyone suggest an excellent book suitable for Slackware and covering these networking areas in newbie friendly terms. Many thanks!
Hi I have just moved house and the broadband has been installed. There is only one phoneline which is the other side of the house to where I need the rg45 connections. I can scrabble together something that work, but I was wondering if anyone can give me advice for a better setup. I have: Adsl router Slingplayer Pogoplug 2 x Homeplug playon.tv installed on pc The primary use of the pogoplug is to stream music and films to my PS3 and TV - I currently have that connected to the router in the other room away from the TV/PS3 and the homeplug bringing in the wired connection. Any ideas gratefully received. TC

I have a sort of photo sharing website that breaks content up by category. There is not much text on the site, and we've been rejected by Google AdSense on that basis (not enough text). I'd like to find an ad network that will let me supply keywords (e.g., we have a gardening section, so we could sell space for gardening ads on those parts of the site) instead of scanning the site for them. Can anyone recommend an ad network that might do this?

I'm trying to find a reference to a story I heard of, possibly here but maybe not. It was about a society of pigeon owners that had a voting scheme that worked along the lines of PageRank, where the value of your vote was based on the number of other members voting for you, calculated recursively. It was an old system, possibly around the French Revolution. My Google-Fu is completely failing me. Does any of this ring any bells?
