Why is my newly build computers internet not working?

So, I just finished building a new computer and have installed windows, all the driver CDs, etc. Then I went to connect it to the internet so I could install some anti-virus software, download the rest of the drivers, etc and no dice. I feel bad having to ask for help, since I'm a computer geek, but well, it is ethernet straight into a modem; normally I just plug it in and it works. [more inside]

Please help us watch TV on our TV

We have a TV but no cable subscription (we mostly watch content through Netflix or purchase on Xbox). We used to be able to watch the normal network channels with no problem -- Fox, NBC, CBS, ABC, and several PBS stations, along with some other stuff. We had both regular and HD channels. Now they're all gone and the only channels we can access are some jazz scheduling thing out of San Mateo, a bunch of radio channels, and NHK World (learning a lot about Japan!). I really miss PBS and wouldn't mind watching the Super Bowl. Please help. [more inside]

Moving to the UK from the US: How do we avoid buying new phones?

We are moving to London and we'd like to bring our American mobile phones to use with whatever British network provider we decide to sign up with. We will no longer have a contract with our US carrier once we move. What do we have to do in order to use UK (and other European) SIM cards in our phones and have them work as well as they did in the US? Complication: Verizon [more inside]

Playstations not playing well with NAT?

I'm a network wrangler at a university. I keep reading articles in the consumer press that that the new playstations have issues in a NAT environment. I'm trying find out what's actually going on with it but my google-fu is failing because all my searches are overwhelmed with results containing, say, instructions for how to set up your linksys home router to do the right thing. Which isn't quite as applicable to my enterprise-level Juniper SRX firewalls. Anyone have pointers to a more enterprise-level technical documentation on this? I'd like to have a good idea of what the issues are before I try and put dorms full of PS4-wielding kids on a NAT network. Thanks!

Do I need a new wireless router?

Comcast internet accessed via a Motorola modem, which Comcast assures me is performing well, even though it's older. I have a D-Link DGL 4300 router behind that, which supplies the house network (desktop, Tivo and drops for laptop setup throughout the house). The router is probably 7-8 years old. [more inside]

Throttle Application bandwidth by Process, not by port or host

I'm using Bitcasa to back up things, but it doesn't have builtin bandwidth upload throttling. So consequently it sucks up all the bandwidth and the entire houses network comes to a stop. This also happens to make browsing the web impossible. This would be easy to do if Bitcasa used a nonstandard port, but it uses 433 to upload to Amazon's EC. I have other applications that also need full bandwidth to EC (intermittently), so throttling those domains won't work either. What I really need is an application specific throttling App . Help? (OS X ML).

Help get my head in the cloud

My company has about 40 employees and five Windows based in-house servers. About half our staff work remotely (using a terminal server) and we have redundant Internet connections. Over the years we have built up a decent data center involving battery backup and tape archival. As I look to the 2014 budget, which would involve upgrading two servers, I have been asked if we should go to the cloud. I'm honestly finding it hard to evaluate this and hope some others may be able to help me improve my pro/con listing. Extra credit for suggestions to evaluate the costs. [more inside]

Best printer for artists in a networked Mac lab?

What would be the best price-conscious inkjet printer (probably at or below $600 though if that's unrealistic, let me know) that can be networked easily to Macs in a school setting for artistic purposes (think high print quailty in color and b/w, low cost ink refills, possibly a high quality scanner as part of it, ideally able to print bleeds or pages larger than 8.5x11")? How to set up a wireless router as an access point via powerline?

I have: two D-Link D655 routers, and two D-Link PowerLine AV+ adapters (DHP-309AV). I understand that I can plug the cable modem into one of the wireless routers, and that router into one of the powerline adapters, and then stick the second adapter in another room, with a second router as an access point, to share the cable connection across the house. Both the internet in general and previous ask.me questions suggest that this is a simple thing to set up. Difficulty: I am neither a network guy, nor a tech guy, and the tutorials I am finding online have really irritating gaps in their instructions. Need help getting this set up! [more inside]

How to Prepare for Grad School, out of state, and Hit the Ground Running

I will be moving to Boston for Grad school. I would love a checklist of what I need to do to prepare, A. I guess just the move in general, but most importantly B. Making the most of the MPH program and hitting the ground running- 2 years is gonna go by fast. I have to secure housing. I need to make sure that I have enough professional clothes- so I am gonna raid the Loft clearance rack. Other than that, I am looking to find a free online Biostats and Epi course, and looking into/reading up on How to Network- everyone keeps talking about it, and I am a total introvert- so I know I gotta figure that out so I can get a job when I graduate. If such a doc already exist, or something like making the most of grad school (I already have the book Getting What you Came for) please let me know, or otherwise give me your advice on what you think I should do now to prepare and be successful, what you wish you had know or done. thanks!

t-mobile unlocking in the uk for iphone

How can I unlock an iphone tied to t-mobile in the UK? I have received as a Christmas present an iphone which is locked to t-mobile. I am currently on an 02 contract that ties me for a further 6 months. Clearly, I would like to use my 02 sim with this iphone, however, when I went to a shop who specialised in phone unlocking, to get it unlocked, I was told that he could not unlock it and that it would take atleast a month to get t-mobile to unlock it. It was also mentioned that the merger of t-mobile in to the new company everything everywhere will probably delay the unlocking further. I am getting the impression that I will be forced to take out a t-mobile contract as it stands. Anyone out there have any recent knowledge about t-mobile unlocking. Many thanks!
