I have been charged with the task of adding a switch to a network. There are ethernet jack points at each workstation and each of these go back to a network cabinet. Apparently to make the connections live I need to add a switch.
Where can I find a tutorial that will quickly get me up to speed with this sort of networking?

Problem: OSX to Windows direct-wired ethernet connection works, but the Mac can't see the shared PC drives.
The PC and the Mac are both normally on wifi but the Mac's Airport is turned off now. Both machines have manual addresses set on their ethernet NICs, with direct CAT5 cable between the two; PC = 10.0.0.1/255.255.255.0; Mac=10.0.0.2/255.255.255.0. (The cable isn't a crossover, because OSX now manages that.)
Ping works in both directions (i.e. from either machine to the other.)

How can I transmit a home network connection 600 feet across a forested piece of property? We have WildBlue with a Linksys router, and I'd like to access it from our guest cottage. I'm doubting we can run an Ethernet cable that far.

i just built my first 'home built' computer - and I am curious as to why I cannot get it to connect to the network that I have set up here in our office.
I am getting two orange lights on the ethernet port, if that helps, and I'm connected through a Linksys WRT54G, and our cable connection. It's a brand-spanking-new machine. more details inside... [more inside]

I have been given a nice, new laptop at work. It has a wireless card, and is also connected via an ethernet cable. How can I get it to default to using the faster, more stable ethernet connection when I'm at my desk? [more inside]

I recently got hold of a PowerMac 5500/2275 (the black one with the TV tuner), but the ethernet port has been upgraded, and is now a modem. While this is all very nice, I'd much prefer it to have LAN functionality. What, exactly, am I looking for on eBay to equip this Mac with a network card, and how difficult are they to install?

Wire[d|less]NetworkingFilter: I have a snow Airport base station that I can happily configure via ethernet cable from a non-wireless-enabled Graphite iMac running 10.3.6 and configure and connect with (using the 56k modem) using a wireless-enabled computer. I want to connect using the ethernetted iMac. Is this possible? [mi] [more inside]
