I need to setup a internal static IP for my computer at home where I'm running Autodesk Smoke on Mac. We currently have terrible wireless by AT&T running from a motorola ngv510 DSL modem/router. Please help? I tried "just figuring it out" and managed to kill the house's internet for over an hour tonight. Anyone have any experience with this?

I've replaced an aging iMac with 3 external drives hanging off of it with a Macbook Pro with the same 3 external drives hanging off of it.
The setup also includes a cable modem and a Time Capsule.
Right now the drives are in daisychained Firewire mode.
I'm looking for a way to connect the drives to my wifi network so I can eliminate the need to plug the first drive into the laptop? Staying with Firewire would be nice, but it's not a deal breaker.

Wi-Fi security. How much of the contents of my a) iPhone or b) iBook can be "seen" if I'm on a public network? Particularly concerning the latter, I've never been clear whether, in logging on to network X--be it a free municipal net or my employer's "guest net"--I'm simply an inscrutable blip on a network or I'm making my hard drive an open book to anyone who cares to peek. Any insight would be appreciated.

I have an Apple AirPort Extreme that is about one year old and recently our wireless network has been experiencing connectivity issues. We've played with some settings...are some settings better for connectivity than others? Do we need a repeater?

Help extending a wireless network? I have a Time Capsule acting as my primary wifi base station. It's in the living room, attached to the only DSL line in the house. It has a great signal all over the house...except of course in my office, in the back room. Any good ideas how to extend the network back there? A few more details inside.

Help save my marriage!
Thunderstorm fried our Apple Extreme Base Station (Gigabit), so we need another router. The problem is that 2 of our computers have wireless cards installed, but one, an old 450 mhz G4 does not, so we need something that can handle wireless traffic and Ethernet cable and is less than the $179 Apple Extreme Base station. All of the machines run the latest version of 10.4.
Suggestions? The Base Station was solid, no problems, but I don't want to pay $179 again.

Some clients of mine have a small consulting business that is rapidly expanding. What started as 1 desktop computer has turned into 4 desktops, 4 laptops (and recently 2 iPhones), and they'll soon be adding some more desktops. They're moving some of the computers out of their home office, and into a "real" office next week and I'm really trying to nail down a good setup for them. I'm looking for your advice on how you've organized a smallish network of Macs, allowing anywhere access of Files, Email, Calendar and Address Book.

I have two identical PowerMac G5s and a single copy of Mac OS X Server. One is a file server for small network. The other exists in case something happens to the first one. Through what mechanism can I keep the contents of these two systems in sync, whether constantly, every few hours, or nightly?

I've got a network in my home - one PC, connected by wire to the router, and one Apple, connected by an Airport card (which I believe is 802.11G). The fastest speed I can get transferring files from one to the other is 2.5MB/s, which seems slow. Am I right, or is this standard?

If several friendly, nosy and very tech-savvy, code-breaking sort of people have access to your computer and you wouldn't wish to hinder their access, but still need to hide, beyond all chance of detection, a folder where you keep your works in progress; innermost thoughts and tentative, early drafts (the kind that could easily be misinterpreted, specially if you write fiction); is there any John Le Carré-approved way of guaranteeing a private patch? I.e. So that they would think it's all open to anyone, but not really? [
Mac OSX, if it's relevant.]
